Parashat 8 –Portion 31 Vayishlach – Beresheet/Genesis 32:3 – 33:17 Obad 1:1-15 – James 1:1-12

Blessing for the Torah:
Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-O’lam, asher bachar banu m’kol ha-amim,
v’natan lanu eht Torah-to. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”

(Blessed are you, YHVH, our Elohim , King of the Universe,
you have selected us from among all the peoples,
and have given us your Torah. Blessed are you, YHVH, giver of the Torah. Ameyn.)

In the last days the remnant of Yakov will have to prepare themselves for fierce and vicious attacks from those who are controlled by the spirit of Esav.
Knowing this, Shaul in his days earnestly requested prayers from the set apart ones.
2Th 3:2  … that we might be delivered from unreasonable (abnormal) and wicked men, for not all have belief.

Belief or faith in the Greek text is preceded by the definite article “the” and should read that not all have the faith.
What faith was he referring to? To THE faith that was passed on from our Hebrew fathers urging us to embrace YHVH’s Torah in the power of His Ruach Ha Kodesh as Yahshua came to demonstrate for us and laid down his life for us to enable us to also do so.

Why should the remnant suffer such humiliation and opposition?

The remnant will do so because they know that their distress is preparing the way for YHVH to bless the nations.

2Co 4:17  For this slight momentary pressure, is working for us a far more exceeding and everlasting weight of esteem.

2Co 4:12  so that death indeed is working in us, but the life in you.

Our Torah portion begins:

Gen 32:3  And Ya’aqoḇ sent messengers before him to Ěsaw his brother in the land of Sĕ’ir, the field of Eḏom

Once again the essence of the Torah portion is captured by its title “va yishlach” “and he sent.”
The word “messenger” is “malachim” in Hebrew and can refer to both angelic as well as human messengers.
We believe YHVH will once again send messengers in the last days to assist the returning remnant of Yakov.

Gen 32:4  and he commanded them, saying, “Say this to my master Ěsaw, ‘Your servant Ya’aqoḇ said this, “I have sojourned with Laḇan and stayed there until now.
Gen 32:5  “And I have bulls, and donkeys, flocks, and male and female servants. And I have sent to inform my master, to find favour in your eyes.” ’ ”

Is this not perhaps an end time message for the remnant of Yakov to act in the opposite spirit to the spirit of Esav. Esav came with evil intentions but Yakov only wants to bless and bring increase into the life of his brother.

The prophets warn us that the spirit of Esav will eventually be destroyed because it cannot truly repent and embrace the remnant of Yakov.

Oba 1:8  “In that day,” declares יהוה, “I shall destroy the wise men from Eḏom, and discernment from the mountains of Ěsaw!
Oba 1:10  “Because of your violence against your brother Ya’aqoḇ, let shame cover you. And you shall be cut off forever.

Oba 1:18  “And the house of Ya’aqoḇ shall be a fire, and the house of Yosĕph a flame, but the house of Ěsaw for stubble. And they shall burn among them and they shall consume them, so that no survivor is left of the house of Ěsaw.” For יהוה has spoken.

Malachi 1:14 the prophet speaks of Esav as … “a people against whom יהוה is enraged forever.”

The focus on an end time prophetic ministry is to call the remnant to repentance and back to the Torah of YHVH. The spirit of Esav has been judged and condemned already. This is why we should act in an opposite spirit, because a judgment of total destruction will come upon a people in the last days that refuse to separate themselves from the spirit of Esav – the remnant must make sure that every possible avenue was pursued to make it possible for those to come out under the influence of this spirit. (This is the view of the author of this study.)

Gen 32:6  So the messengers returned to Ya’aqoḇ, saying, “We came to your brother Ěsaw, and he also is coming to meet you, and four hundred men with him.”

If we allow ourselves a little indulgence in Hebrew gematria we know that the numerical value of “aleph” is one and the numerical value of “tav” is four hundred. We know that Yahshua is referred to as the “aleph and the tav.”
Esav is accompanied by 400 men, including himself that makes 401 – the numerical value of aleph and tav added together.
The anti -messiah like Esav is the exact opposite of the true Messiah but will probably deceive many into believing that he is the true Messiah. The anti messiah will most probably convince as many as possible to rise up against the remnant of Yakov to destroy them in the last days.

We see this pattern repeating itself against the Jewish people for millennia.

This could be a possible prophetic warning and reference to the “two camps” (two house teaching) we find in this Torah portion. The spirit of Esav has not been kind to the one camp – the Jews – why should it be kind to the second camp of Yakov – the returning remnant exiles – in the last days?

Gen 32:7  And Yaaqoḇ was greatly afraid and distressed. So he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two groups,
Gen 32:8  and he said, “If Ěsaw comes to the one group and attacks it, then the other group which is left shall escape.”

The spirit of Esav – of manmade religion – CAN NEVER BE TRUSTED.

Gen 32:9  And Ya’aqoḇ said, “O Elohim of my father Aḇraham and Elohim of my father Yitsḥaq, יהוה who said to me, ‘Return to your land and to your relatives, and I do good to you,’
Gen 32:10  “I do not deserve the least of all the kind acts and all the truth which You have shown Your servant, for I passed over this Yardĕn with my staff, and now I have become two groups.

Literal Hebrew says “ I am smaller than all the lovingkindness and all the truth You have done with your servant” In the words of Yochanan the immerse “he must increase and I must decrease” Jn 3:30

The pattern of our return to the land is to first cross the “Yarden” it comes from the Hebrew word “to go down” -  it is only those who are willing to humble themselves that will be able to enter the land.

Later we see Yakov all alone after he has crossed over the fjord “Yabbok” 32:22 Yabbok means to “empty out” – we see here at this point in Yakov’s life he has come to a complete end of himself and knows that only YHVH can rescue him – Yakov has the faith in the midst of this crisis to believe YHVH will rescue him and his family.

Gen 32:11  “Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Ěsaw, for I fear him, lest he come and shall smite me and the mother with the children.
Gen 32:12  “For You said, ‘I shall certainly do good to you, and shall make your seed as the sand of the sea, which are too numerous to count.’ ”
Gen 32:13  And he spent the night there, and took what came to his hand as a present for Ěsaw his brother –
Gen 32:14  two hundred female goats and twenty male goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams,
Gen 32:15  thirty milk camels with their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty female donkeys and ten foals.
Gen 32:16  And he gave into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said to his servants, “Pass over before me, and put some distance between drove and drove.”
Gen 32:17  And he commanded the first one, saying, “When Ěsaw my brother meets you and asks you, saying, ‘To whom do you belong, and where are you going? And whose are these in front of you?’
Gen 32:18  then you shall say, ‘They are your servant Yaaqoḇ’s. It is a present sent to my master Ěsaw. And see, he also is behind us.’ ”
Gen 32:19  So he commanded the second, and the third, and all who followed the droves, saying, “Speak to Ěsaw this same word when you find him,
Gen 32:20  and you shall say, ‘Also look, your servant Yaaqoḇ is behind us.’ ” For he said, “Let me appease him with the present that goes before me, and after that see his face. He might accept me.”
Gen 32:21  And the present passed over before him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.

Once again we are reminded how the Jews have fought and prevailed against this spirit of Esav. This has made it possible for an end time remnant to return.
It is possible that before this happens that the spirit of Esav within Yisrael will rise up together  with the spirit of Esav outside Yisrael and will attempt to bring destruction to the nation of Yisrael -  this will be the mission of the anti messiah.

Consider for a moment all the benefits that have come to the world through the Jews and in spite of this the spirit of Esav has only one goal in mind – to destroy Yisrael and replace Yisrael with itself.

Rom 3:1  What then is the advantage of the Yehuḏite, or what is the value of the circumcision?
Rom 3:2  Much in every way! Because firstly indeed, that they were entrusted with the Words of Elohim.

Rom 9:4  who are Yisra’ĕlites, whose is the adoption, and the esteem, and the covenants, and the giving of the Torah, and the worship, and the promises,

Gen 32:22  And he rose up that night and took his two wives, and his two female servants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford of Yabboq.
Gen 32:23  And he took them and sent them over the stream, and sent over what he had.
Gen 32:24  And Yaaqoḇ was left alone. And a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day.

We need to consider here the price of true Messianic leadership -  you must be willing to be completely emptied of all that is not of YHVH and be willing to stand alone at times after people reject you and leave you.

Gen 32:25  And when He saw that He did not overcome him, He touched the socket of his hip. And the socket of Yaaqoḇ’s hip was dislocated as He wrestled with him.
Gen 32:26  And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.” But he said, “I am not letting You go until You have blessed me!”
Gen 32:27  So He asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Yaaqoḇ.”
Gen 32:28  And He said, “Your name is no longer called Yaaqoḇ, but Yisra’ĕl1, because you have striven with Elohim and with men, and have overcome.” Footnote: 1Yisra’ĕl means “to strive with Ěl, to overcome with Ěl, (then) to rule with Ěl”

I am going to wrestle with Elohim and man until I can clearly see the Hand of Elohim in my and others’ lives.

Jobs’s conclusion was:

Job 42:5  I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You.
Job 42:6  Therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.”

This can only happen to those who are called according to His purposes.

Rom 8:28  And we know that all matters work together for good to those who love Elohim, to those who are called according to His purpose.
Rom 8:29  Because those whom He knew beforehand, He also ordained beforehand to be conformed to the likeness of His Son, for Him to be the first-born among many brothers.

Gen 32:29  And Yaaqoḇ asked Him, saying, “Please let me know Your Name.” And He said, “Why do you ask about My Name?” And He blessed him there.
Gen 32:30  And Yaaqoḇ called the name of the place Peni’ĕl, “For I have seen Elohim face to face, and my life is preserved.”
Gen 32:31  And the sun rose on him as he passed over Penu’ĕl, and he limped on his hip.
Gen 32:32  That is why the children of Yisra’ĕl to this day do not eat the sinew of the hip, which is on the socket of the thigh, because He touched the socket of the thigh of Yaaqoḇ, in the sinew of the hip.
Gen 33:1  And Ya’aqoḇ lifted his eyes and looked and saw Ěsaw coming, and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children among Lĕ’ah, and Raḥĕl, and the two female servants.
Gen 33:2  And he put the female servants and their children in front, and Lĕ’ah and her children behind, and Raḥĕl and Yosĕph last.
Gen 33:3  And he himself passed over before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
Gen 33:4  And Ěsaw ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept.
Gen 33:5  And he lifted his eyes and saw the women and children, and said, “Who are these with you?” And he said, “The children with whom Elohim has favoured your servant.”
Gen 33:6  Then the female servants came near, they and their children, and bowed themselves.
Gen 33:7  And Lĕ’ah also came near with her children, and they bowed themselves. And Yosĕph and Raḥĕl came near, and they bowed themselves.
Gen 33:8  Then Ěsaw said, “What do you mean by all this company which I met?” And he said, “To find favour in the eyes of my master.”
Gen 33:9  But Ěsaw said, “I have enough, my brother, let what you have remain yours.”
Gen 33:10  And Ya’aqoḇ said, “No, please, if I have now found favour in your eyes, then receive my present from my hand, because I have seen your face like seeing the face of Elohim, and you were pleased with me.
Gen 33:11  “Please, take my blessing that is brought to you, because Elohim has favoured me, and because I have all I need.” And he urged him, and he took it.
Gen 33:12  And he said, “Let us depart and go, and let me go before you.”
Gen 33:13  But he said to him, “My master knows that the children are weak, and the flocks and herds which are nursing are with me. And if the men should drive them hard one day, all the flocks shall die.
Gen 33:14  “Please let my master go before his servant, and let me lead on slowly according to the pace of the livestock that go before me, and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my master in Sĕ’ir.”
Gen 33:15  And Ěsaw said, “Please let me leave with you some of the people who are with me.” But he said, “Why this? Let me find favour in the eyes of my master.”
Gen 33:16  And Ěsaw returned that day on his way to Sĕ’ir.

The book of Yasher chapter 32

26 And Jacob tarried there that night, and during the whole night he gave his servants instructions concerning the forces and his children.
27 And YHVH heard the prayer of Jacob on that day, and YHVH then delivered Jacob from the hands of his brother Esau.
28 And YHVH sent three angels of the angels of heaven, and they went before Esau and came to him.
29 And these angels appeared unto Esau and his people as two thousand men, riding upon horses furnished with all sorts of war instruments, and they appeared in the sight of Esau and all his men to be divided into four camps, with four chiefs to them.

This event caused great fear and anxiety to come upon Esav and stopped him from doing his brother any harm.

Gen 33:17  And Yaaqoḇ set out to Sukkoth, and built himself a house, and made booths for his livestock. That is why the name of the place is called Sukkoth.
“Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-‘Olam, asher natan lanu Toraht-emet, v’chay-yeh o’lam nata-b’tochenu. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”

(Blessed are you YHVH, our Elohim, King of the Universe, you have given us your Torah of truth, and have planted everlasting life within our midst. Blessed are you, Yahweh giver of the Torah – Ameyn
