Parashat 39 – Chukat- “Statutes”

Bemidbar/Numbers 19:1-22:1

Blessing for the Torah:

Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-O’lam, asher bachar banu m’kol ha-amim,
v’natan lanu eht Torah-to. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”

(Blessed are you, YHVH, our Elohim , King of the Universe, you have selected us
from among all the peoples, and have given us your Torah. Blessed are you,
YHVH, giver of the Torah. Ameyn.)

Introductory comments to the parashah:

This parashah is difficult to understand. The sages say that the commandment of the Red Heifer is “beyond human understanding”  Romans 10:4 clearly reminds us that the Messiah is the purpose of the Torah and the Torah can only be properly understood in the light of who the real Messiah is.

The “chukat” or “statutes” of this portion only begins to make sense when seen in the light of our Messiah Yahshua. These “chukat” unravel some of the deepest mysteries of our Messiah’s deep love and desire to be united with his bride, soon, and for all eternity. Our love and desire to be with our Messiah King is measured by our response and understanding of these “chukat.”

The meaning of the word “chukat” comes from the Hebrew verb “chukak” and means to cut upon, engrave or inscribe.
“The phrase in 19:2 “zot chuckat ha torah” “this is the chukat of the Torah” appears only twice in the Torah (see also 31:21) This could be interpreted to mean “ this is the whole essence of the Torah”

What is the whole essence of the Torah? The Torah is about how an estranged bride – Yisrael, is returning to her bridegroom Messiah and his Father’s house. YHVH accomplishes this mission by placing the fullness of who He is in His only brought forth Son, who himself is the embodiment of the entire Torah. The Torah in the flesh - Yahshua ha Mashiach, and then He unites forever those who possess and desire this witness of Messiah and are lovingly obedient to His commandments.

Rev 14:12  Here is the endurance of the set-apart ones,1 here are those guarding the commands of Elohim and the belief of Yahshua/ יהושע.2 Footnotes: 1In 12:17 they are called “the remnant”

This great redemption love story starts in a garden. Sin estranged these two lovers once upon a time but our Creator King knew how He would restore this Divine Romance. He created a Second Adam and began a restoring courtship again for His fallen bride – Yisrael.
This mystery explains why so much of the language of restoration found in the Torah appears in the feminine gender.
Let us look at some of many examples: The word “Torah” meaning “pointing” or “instruction” is a feminine noun.
The word “chukat” is a feminine noun.

Other significant words that appear in the feminine gender include: Yerushalayim, covenant (brit), sin chatat, inheritance (nachalah), battle (milchamah), worship (avodah), gifts (minchah), love (ahavah), repentance (teshuva) and many more.

This Torah and Haftarah portion brings to light the pivotal role of the coming together in the spiritual as well as physical realms the masculine and the feminine – the bride and the bridegroom.
In the Haftarah: Shoftim 11:1-33 we have the events of Yiphtach/Jafta (means “he will open”) who makes a rash vow after victory in a battle to present his virgin daughter as an offering. There are some reliable commentaries which state that this was not a human offering, but a dedication of this young virgin girl to the service of YHVH.
This may come as a surprise to many of us but the Torah speaks of Tabernacle ministry that was performed by dedicated woman.
Shemot/Exo 38:8  And he made the basin of bronze and its stand of bronze, from the bronze mirrors of the serving women who did service at the door (patach) of the Tent of Meeting.
The Hebrew word used that refers to these women as “warriors” is “hatzovot” Strongs 6633.
The Hebrew word for entrance is “petach” the same root used in the name of “Yiftach” What could this possibly mean?

Is it possible that in the last days those relationships between men and woman will reflect the relationship between Yahshua and his Bride. This will bring about that set apart woman will once again be released in playing an important supportive role in bringing about an end time restoration of the leadership of the true spiritual fathers and cause dedicated woman to return to the “entrance of the tabernacle of meeting of YHVH”?

This ministry may be just as important as the elders who sat at the city gates. These elders protected the cities from harmful influences, but these warrior - women supported the priests as they enter into the Set apart Place/tabernacle, the dwelling of the presence of YHVH.
This ministry was not something strange to women; we see that even Yahshua had a group of dedicated women who ministered to him.

Luk 8:3  and Yochanah the wife of Kuza, manager of Herodes, and Shoshannah, and many others who provided for Him from their resources.

Channah the prophetess: Luk 2:37  and she was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not leave the Set-apart Place, but served Elohim with fastings and prayers night and day.

I am fully aware of the prophetic warnings about the Jezebellic spirit and the Queen of heaven who will attempt to come and emasculate the true priestly ministry in the end time, however there is a great danger that we will not recognize and release the true set apart ministry of women who have been held back by our man made religious ideas concerning women and their important role in the restoration of the bride of Messiah. This has been the sad testimony of the rabbi’s for centuries who would not even allow the women to come near to the entrance of the Temple. They had to stay with the gentiles in the courtyard outside the Place of Meeting.

I believe Yirmeyahu was prophesying about a unique relationship that would exist between men and women in the end time restoration of all things, when renewed covenant will be the Torah in our hearts.

Yir/Jer 31:22 “ …. For יהוה has created what is new on earth: a woman encompasses a man!”

This is the same verse that is demonstrated at a Hebraic wedding when the bride surrounds the groom seven times. What does it mean? No one knows for sure. The Hebrew states that which is feminine (nekvah) will surround that which is mighty (ga ver) like a might man going to war.
I believe this scripture and Torah portion are pointing to a very special kind of restoration that will take place between men and woman in the last days – a certain dynamic will emerge from our relationships that have not previously existed.  We see this quality in the end time bride emerging from the great tribulation in Revelation 15 singing the Song of Moshe and of the Lamb. We find the song of Moshe in the Torah and the song of the Lamb in the Song of Songs. (The sages declare the book Song of Songs, the most set apart book in the Tenach)

Aliyah Rishon 19:1-17

Bemidbar is the Hebrew name of this Book– Numbers is the translation that English translators gave to this Book

Num 19:1  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh and to Aharon, saying,
Num 19:2  “This is a law of the Torah which יהוה has commanded, saying, ‘Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, that they bring you a red heifer, a perfect one, in which there is no blemish and on which a yoke has never come.

There are conflicting reports as to the present day existence of a Red Hefer (female cow). She is to have no blemish- if two hairs on her body are not red then she is considered to have a blemish.  “No yoke” could imply that there was no burden on this animal which refers to the burden of sin. This points us to the perfect offering Messiah made when he presented himself a perfect offering for our sins.
Num 19:3  ‘And you shall give it to El’azar the priest, and he shall bring it outside the camp, and shall slaughter it before him.

The Red Heifer or “para aduma” could also refer to the Messiah who was slain outside the camp on the Mount of Olives. (There is growing consensus that Yahshua was executed on the Mount of Olives)

Num 19:4  ‘And El’azar the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger, and sprinkle some of its blood seven times toward the front of the Tent of Meeting.

Seven times could be pointing to the 7000 years YHVH extends His atonement to mankind in order to bring him to perfection to enter into the Eighth Day or eternity. This causes us to face the fact that for a period of seven thousand years we will be confronted with the contamination of death.

The Sevenfold Sprinkling of the Blood of Messiah:

1) In the Garden of Gethsemane/Mount of Olives (Sweat of Blood) - Luke 22:44.
2) Pilate had Yahshua flogged (Stripes on the back) – Matthew 27:26; Mark 15:15; Yoch/John 19:1.
3) Set a crown of thorns upon his head.  Matthew 27:29; Mark 15:17; John 19:2)
4) …they struck him on the head… (Beating and plucking the beard) - Matthew 27:30; Mark 15:19; Yochanan/John 19:3.
5) The nails piercing his hands…
6) The nails piercing his feet… implied in this statement – ‘And they impaled him…’ Matthew 27:35; Mark 15:24; Luke 23:33; Yochanan/John 19:18, 20:25)
7) …pierced Yahshua’s side with a spear… - Yochanan/John 19:34

Num 19:5  ‘And the heifer shall be burned before his eyes – he burns its hide, and its flesh, and its blood, and its dung.
Num 19:6  ‘And the priest shall take cedar wood and hyssop and scarlet, and throw them into the midst of the fire burning the heifer.

Yahshua willingly gave himself completely for our transgressions as an offering and was bound to an execution stake and his blood needs to be applied as the blood of the Passover lamb on the doorways of our hearts.

Three elements, cedar-wood, hyssop, and scarlet wool yarn had to be added in order to produce the ashes, which would later be mixed with the water that would serve for purification This hints to us that the horizontal beam that our Master was hung on could have been made of cedar-wood.

“The hyssop was used in connection with the Messiah’s death, which connects him with the deliverance from Mitzrayim, when hyssop was used to sprinkle the blood on the doorposts.  Hyssop was also used in the cleansing process from “tzaraat” (“leprosy”Lev 14) which symbolizes sin. In this parasha hyssop was used in the cleansing from ritual uncleanness caused by contact with death as well as when the children of Israel entered the covenant.

We read in Ivrim/Heb 9:19-20  “For when, according to Torah, every command had been spoken by Mosheh to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying, “This is the blood of the covenant which Elohim commanded you.”

Tehillim/Psa 51:7  Cleanse me with hyssop, and I am clean; Wash me, and I am whiter than snow.

The scarlet red wool yarn reminds us of how we too are bound to Messiah in his death. In the commentary on Leviticus 14:4 in Parashah 28, Metzorah, there are several details about the significance of the three elements used in this cleansing.”

Num 19:7  ‘The priest shall then wash his garments, and shall bathe his body in water, and afterward come into the camp, but the priest is unclean until evening.
Num 19:8  ‘And he who is burning it washes his garments in water, and shall bathe his body in water, and is unclean until evening.
Num 19:9  ‘And a clean man shall gather up the ashes of the heifer, and shall place them outside the camp in a clean place. And they shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Yisra’ĕl for the water for uncleanness, it is for cleansing from sin.
Num 19:10  ‘And he who gathers the ashes of the heifer shall wash his garments, and is unclean until evening. And it shall be a law forever to the children of Yisra’ĕl and to the stranger who sojourns in their midst.

The ashes of the burnt offering were taken outside the camp; the ashes of the Red Heifer were brought inside the camp. These ashes are the evidence of a people who are being set apart for the Master. The ashes that come inside the camp are for the cleansing of His people. The time will come when the cleansing of the camp will cause the light of the Torah to go out into the nations.

Num 19:11  ‘He who touches the dead of any human being is unclean for seven days.
Num 19:12  ‘He is to cleanse himself with the water on the third day, and on the seventh day he is clean. But if he does not cleanse himself on the third day, then on the seventh day he is not clean.
Num 19:13  ‘Anyone who touches the dead of a human being, and does not cleanse himself, defiles the Dwelling Place of יהוה. And that being shall be cut off from Yisra’ĕl. He is unclean, for the water for uncleanness was not sprinkled on him, his uncleanness is still upon him.
Num 19:14  ‘This is the Torah when a man dies in a tent: All who come into the tent and all who are in the tent are unclean for seven days,
Num 19:15  and every open vessel which has no cover fastened on it, is unclean.
Num 19:16  ‘Anyone in the open field who touches someone slain by a sword or who has died, or a bone of a man, or a grave, is unclean for seven days.
Num 19:17  ‘And for the unclean being they shall take some of the ashes of the heifer burnt for cleansing from sin, and running water shall be put on them in a vessel.

In Yezekel/Ezekiel 36:24-30, it is written,
“For I will take you from among the nations, and gather you out of all the countries, and will bring you into your own land. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you shall keep my ordinances, and do them. You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and you shall be my people, and I will be your Eloha. I will save you from all your uncleanness: and I will call for the grain, and will multiply it, and lay no famine on you. I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that you may receive no more the reproach of famine among the nations.”

One week is needed in order for anyone to be cleansed from the effects of death. On the eighth day one is clean. In the same way the world will go through seven thousand years of cleansing. Thereafter there will be righteousness without death. The third day represents the third millennium after Adam, when the children of Israel left Mitzrayim and received the Torah that cleanses. The Messiah will come to the seventh millennium to cleanse, not only those who have been in contact with death, but also the dead who will be resurrected. This speaks of two very significant points in the history of the world, the first and the second redemption, which occur in the third and the seventh millennium”

Rabban Maimonides, who codified the Torah, prophesied that the Messiah would sacrifice the tenth Parah Adumah (Red Heifer) in human history [at his coming].

Aliyah Sheni 19:18-20:6

Num 19:18  ‘And a clean man shall take hyssop and dip it in the water, and shall sprinkle it on the tent, and on all the vessels, and on the beings who were there, or on the one who touched a bone, or the slain, or the dead, or a grave.
Num 19:19  ‘And the clean one shall sprinkle the unclean on the third day and on the seventh day. And on the seventh day he shall cleanse himself, and shall wash his garments and bathe in water, and shall be clean in the evening.
Num 19:20  ‘But the man who is unclean and does not cleanse himself, that being shall be cut off from among the assembly, because he has defiled the set-apart place of יהוה – water for uncleanness has not been sprinkled on him, he is unclean.
Num 19:21  ‘And it shall be a law for them forever. And the one who sprinkles the water for uncleanness washes his garments. And the one who touches the water for uncleanness is unclean until evening.
Num 19:22  ‘And whatever the unclean being touches is unclean. And the being who touches it is unclean until evening.’ ”

Parashat 38 - Korach means “shaved”

Bemidbar/Numbers 16:1-18:32

“Korach” the three Hebrew consonants that spell Korach’s name are also contained in the Hebrew word for “bald” (“kereach”)

Summary of Parasha:

“Korach, Datan and Aviram, and 250 of the leaders of Yisrael rebel against the authority of Moshe and Aaron.  The rebellion results in their being swallowed up by the earth and 250 princes of Yisrael are then consumed by fire that comes from heaven. Many people of the nation resent the death of Korach and his followers, holding Moshe responsible.  YHVH’s (Yahveh’s) anger' is manifested by a plague which besets the nation, and many thousands perish -14700. Moshe intercedes once again for the people, instructs Aaron to make atonement for them, and the plague is halted. YHVH then commands that a staff inscribed with the name of each Tribe be placed in the Mishkan/Tabernacle.  In the morning, the staff of Levi, bearing Aaron's name, sprouts, buds, blossoms and yields ripe almonds.  This provides confirmation that the Tribe of Levi is selected for the Priesthood, and also verifies Aaron's position as the Kohen Gadol/High Priest.  The specific duties of the Levi'im and Kohanim are stated.  The Kohanim were not to be landowners, but were to receive their sustenance from the tithes and other mandated gifts brought by the people.  Also taught in this week's Parasha are laws concerning the first fruits, the redemption of the firstborn, and other offerings”.

The Number 38 speaks of bondage and slavery.
Yochanan/Joh 5:5 And a certain man was there who had a sickness thirty-eight years.
This man was in bondage to his condition for 38 years.

Debarim/Deu 2:14 “And the time we took to come from Qaḏĕsh Barnĕa until we passed over the wadi Zereḏ was thirty-eight years, until all the generation of the men of battle was consumed from the midst of the camp, as יהוה had sworn to them.

The Yisraelites had been in the wilderness more than a year when the spies brought the negative report. Thirty eight years followed the negative report before Yisrael could once again enter into the land.

Num 16:1  And Qoraḥ (Korach), son of Yitshar, son of Qehath, son of Lĕwi, took both Dathan and Aḇiram the sons of Eliyaḇ, and On, son of Peleth, sons of Re’uḇĕn,

The Torah starts with a verb  “vayikach” Korach took what did not belong to him. “Vayikach comes from the root Hebrew word “lakach” which means to take. Note it was something taken and not given.

The Talmud states “Yakov had prayed not to be listed amongst Korah's ancestors in Gen 49:6 where it is written, “Let my soul not come into their council; unto their assembly let my glory not be united.” “Let my soul not come into their council” referred to the spies, and “unto their assembly let my esteem not to be united” referred to Korah’s assembly. As the name Dathan in  Numbers 16:1 derived from the same Hebrew root as the word “law” (dath), the Gemara deduced from Dathan’s name that he violated YHVH’s law. The Gemara related the name Abiram in Numbers 16:1 to the Hebrew word for “strengthened” (iber) and deduced from Abiram’s name that he stoutly refused to repent. The Gemara related the name On in Num 16:1 1 to the Hebrew word for “mourning” (aninut) and deduced from On’s name that he sat in lamentations. The Gemara related the name Peleth in Num 16:1 to the Hebrew word for “miracles” (pelaot) and deduced from Peleth’s name that YHVH performed wonders for him. And as the name Reuben derived from the Hebrew words “see” (reu) and “understand” (mavin), the Gemara deduced from the reference to On as a “son of Reuben” in Nuym 16:1 that On was a son who saw and understood. (Babylonian Talmud Sanhedrin 109b.)”
The breeding ground for Korach’s rebellion was due to his jealousy over his younger cousin (Mosheh) who was appointed leader over him. How important it is to make sure that jealousy is banished from our hearts!

Num 16:2  and they rose up before Mosheh with some of the children of Yisra’ĕl, two hundred and fifty leaders of the congregation, called ones of the meeting, men of name.

The gematria for the Hebrew word “rebellious” Strongs 4805 “meriy” (mem, reish, yud) equals 250.

Num 16:3  And they assembled against Mosheh and against Aharon, and said to them, “Enough of you! (rav lachem) For all the congregation is set-apart, all of them, and יהוה is in their midst. Why then do you lift up yourselves above the assembly of יהוה?”
Num 16:4  And when Mosheh heard, he fell on his face, (he must have realized how very, very serious this situation was going to be)
Num 16:5  and spoke to Qoraḥ and all his company,(“kol adato” - all of his congregation) saying, “Tomorrow morning (in the dawning of a new day) יהוה shall make known who is His and who is set-apart, and bring him near to Him. And let Him bring near to Him the one whom He chooses. (Moshe was implying that only one of the parties was going to survive)

Apparently, the original meaning of the root – “bakar” בקר  is "to cleave, to split" (and is related to the similar בקע). Boker meaning morning derives, according to Klein, from "the breaking through of daylight".

This is possibly pointing prophetically to a future day in the last days prior to Yahshua’s return – the dawning of the day – where this age will be finally separated “split” from the age to come or the millennial reign of Messiah.

Perhaps this issue of whose worship is acceptable to YHVH will be finally determined in the last days.

We need to clearly understand that the Torah is trying to tell us very, very clearly that a CHALLENGE to the authority of the Torah and its importance for mankind WILL NOT GO UNSETTLED.

Yeshayahu/Isa 24:1  See, יהוה is making the earth empty and making it waste, and shall overturn its surface, and shall scatter abroad its inhabitants.
Isa 24:3  the earth is completely emptied and utterly plundered, for יהוה has spoken this word.
Isa 24:5  For the earth has been defiled under its inhabitants, because they have transgressed the Torot1, changed2 the law, broken the everlasting covenant3. Footnotes: 1Torot - plural of Torah, teaching. 2Jer. 23:36. 3This is the only reason, according to all Scriptures, why the earth shall be burned in the day of judgment – see also 13:9, 13:11, 26:21, 66:24, Mic. 5:15, Zeph. 1:2-18.

Bemidbar/Num 16:6  “Do this: Take fire holders, Qoraḥ and all your company,

Is it possible that this verse speaks of the fire of an end time judgment?

The Hebrew word for “fire holder” is Strongs 4288 “machtah” this word is very closely related to Strongs 4289 “mechitah” which means destruction.

He who has an ear to listen let them hear what the Ruach (Spirit) is saying here. All of us have been created  with a desire to WORSHIP. WHAT AND HOW WE WORSHIP CAN EITHER BRING US LIFE OR DESTRUCTION.

Yahshua himself very clearly taught that the honour and worship were to go to his Father – YHVH.

Mar 12:29  And יהושע answered him, “The first of all the commands is, ‘Hear, O Yisra’ĕl, יהוה our Elohim, יהוה is one. (There is no second or anyone like Him)
Mar 12:30  ‘And you shall love יהוה your Elohim with all your heart, and with all your being, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first command.

Yahshua said: Yochanan/Joh 4:23  “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also does seek such to worship Him.

Listen carefully what the prophet says:

Yirmeyahu/Jer 2:13  “For My people have done two evils: they have forsaken Me, (YHVH) the fountain of living waters1, to hew out for themselves cisterns, cracked cisterns, which do not hold water. Footnote: 1See 17:13.

Jer 5:30  “An astounding and horrible matter has come to be in the land:
Jer 5:31  The prophets have prophesied falsely1, and the priests rule by their own hand, and My people have loved it so.2 And what are you going to do at the end of it? Footnotes: 1See 27:14,15. 2Isa. 30:10, 2 Tim. 4:3.

Num 16:7  and put fire in them and put incense in them before יהוה tomorrow. And it shall be that the one whom יהוה chooses is the set-apart one. Enough of you, sons of Lĕwi!” (rav lachem)
Num 16:8  And Mosheh said to Qoraḥ, “Hear now, you sons of Lĕwi:
Num 16:9  “Is it little to you that the Elohim of Yisra’ĕl has separated you from the congregation of Yisra’ĕl, to bring you near to Himself, to perform the service of the Dwelling Place of יהוה, and to stand before the congregation to serve them,
Num 16:10  and that He has brought you near to Himself, you and all your brothers, the sons of Lĕwi, with you? Yet you seek the priesthood as well?
Num 16:11  “Therefore you and all your company are set against יהוה. And Aharon, what is he that you grumble against him?”
Num 16:12  And Mosheh sent to call Dathan and Aḇiram the sons of Eliyaḇ, but they said, “We are not coming up!
Num 16:13  “Is it little that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, that you would also seize total rule over us?

Take note of the tragic downward spiral of  those  who become rebellious to YHVH’s authority. They  become ungrateful and become devoid of reasoning in a sensible fashion.

Rom 1:20  For since the creation of the world His invisible qualities have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, both His everlasting power and Mightiness, for them to be without excuse,
Rom 1:21  because, although they knew Elohim, they did not esteem Him as Elohim, nor gave thanks, but became vain in their reasonings, and their undiscerning heart was darkened.
Rom 1:22  Claiming to be wise, they became fools,

Aliyah Sheni 16:14-19

Num 16:14  “Also, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Would you bore out the eyes of these men? We are not coming up!”
Num 16:15  And Mosheh became very displeased, and said to יהוה, “Do not respect their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them, nor have I done harm to any of them.”
Num 16:16  Then Mosheh said to Qoraḥ, “Tomorrow, you and all your company shall be there before יהוה, you and they and Aharon.

“tomorrow” Hebrew “machar” can also mean at a “future time.”

Num 16:17  “And take each one his fire holder, and you shall put incense in it. And let each one bring his fire holder before יהוה, two hundred and fifty fire holders, and you and Aharon, each one with his fire holder.”
Num 16:18  So each one took his fire holder, and put fire in it, and laid incense on it, and stood at the door of the Tent of Meeting with Mosheh and Aharon.
Num 16:19  And Qoraḥ assembled all the congregation against them at the door of the Tent of Meeting. Then the esteem of יהוה appeared to all the congregation.

Aliyah Shlishi 16:20-43

Num 16:20  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, and to Aharon, saying,
Num 16:21  “Separate yourselves from the midst of this congregation, and let Me consume them in a moment.”
Num 16:22  But they fell on their faces, and said, “O Ěl, Elohim of the spirits of all flesh! When one man sins, are You wroth with all the congregation?”

We are to separate ourselves from those who are determined to undermine the authority of the Torah.

Rev 18:4  And I heard another voice from the heaven saying, “Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues.1 Footnote: 1Jer. 51:6 & 45.

May we however also respond as Mosheh by praying and interceding for the rebellious nation.

Num 16:23  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,
Num 16:24  “Speak to the congregation, saying, ‘Move away from around the tents of Qoraḥ, Dathan, and Aḇiram.’ ”
Num 16:25  So Mosheh rose up and went to Dathan and Aḇiram, and the elders of Yisra’ĕl followed him.
Num 16:26  And he spoke to the congregation, saying, “Please turn away from the tents of these wrong men! Do not touch whatever belongs to them, lest you be consumed in all their sins.”
Num 16:27  Then they moved away from around the tents of Qoraḥ, Dathan, and Aḇiram. And Dathan and Aḇiram came out and stood at the door of their tents, with their wives, and their sons, and their little children.

Dathan in Hebrew means “law” and Abiram means “strength” combined in the context of this narrative, we assume that that there was a strength or stubbornness to resist the law of YHVH.
We see this idea supported by the use of the word “stood” in vs 27 “natzav” which can also mean to “stand erect” in defiance.
We must assume that there are times when people have so hardened their hearts against the Torah of YHVH, and they refuse to change their minds. There is a danger of this phenomenon in the so called “grace movements” of our day.

Num 16:28  And Mosheh said, “By this you know that יהוה has sent me to do all these works, that they are not from my own heart.
Num 16:29  “If these die as all men do, or if they are visited as all men are visited, then יהוה has not sent me.

We must recognize that YHVH could not allow this kind of rebellion go unchallenged, if He did it would have given the message that the exodus out of Mitrayim/Egypt, the giving of the Torah and the journey to the promised land, were all because of the initiative of Moshe and not YHVH’s direct instruction and involvement.

Num 16:30  “But if יהוה creates what is unheard of, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the grave, then you shall know that these men have scorned יהוה.”
Num 16:31  And it came to be, as he ended speaking all these words, that the ground under them split apart,
Num 16:32  and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and all the men with Qoraḥ, with all their goods.
Num 16:33  So they and all those with them went down alive into the grave, and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly.
Num 16:34  And all Yisra’ĕl who were round about them fled at their cry, for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up!”
Num 16:35  And a fire came out from יהוה and consumed the two hundred and fifty men who were offering incense.
Num 16:36  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,
Num 16:37  “Say to El’azar, son of Aharon the priest, to pick up the fire holders out of the blaze, for they are set-apart, and scatter the fire some distance away.
Num 16:38  “The fire holders of these men who sinned against their own lives, let them be made into beaten plates as a covering for the altar. Because they brought them before יהוה, therefore they are set-apart. And let them become a sign to the children of Yisra’ĕl.”
Num 16:39  And El’azar the priest took the bronze fire holders, which those who were burned up had brought, and they were beaten out as a covering on the altar –

These fire holders were set apart, because the original intention was to bring worship. However we know that it was not in spirit and in truth (Jn4:23).

This should be a serious warning that worship is one of the set apart activities we can participate in.

Our worship can be compared to building an altar in the spiritual realm. All altars point to the life and ministry of Yahshua. Our worship and altars should therefore reflect the same value and purpose that Yahshua came to show us – bringing us into harmony and oneness with YHVH.
Our worship and the altars we build in our lives will therefore bring blessing or judgment upon our lives.

Parashat 37– “Shelach lecha” – send! You send

Bemidbar/ Numbers 13:1 -15:41

“Thus it came to pass that on the Ninth of Av -- a day which was to bode many tragedies for the people of Israel YHVH informed Moshe that the generation that received the Torah at Sinai was not fit to enter the Land of Canaan. He decreed that they shall live out their lives as wanderers in the desert until a new generation would take up the challenge of conquering the land of Canaan and developing it as a "Set Apart land”

What Happened?

Virtually all the commentaries pose the question: What happened? Where did they go wrong?

The spies dispatched by Moshe were no ordinary individuals: "They were all men of distinction, leaders of the children of Yisrael" (Bemidbar/Numbers 13:3). Furthermore, in all of history, it would be difficult to find a generation whose lives were more saturated with miracles than theirs. Mitsrayim/ Egypt, the most powerful nation on earth at the time, was forced to free them from slavery when "the mighty hand" of YHVH inflicted ten supernatural plagues. When Pharaoh's armies pursued them, the sea split to let them pass and then drowned their pursuers. In the desert, miracles were the stuff of their daily lives: manna from heaven was their daily bread, "Miryam's well" (a miraculous stone which travelled along with the Yisraelite camp) provided them with water, and "clouds of esteem" sheltered them from the desert heat and cold, kept them clothed and shod, destroyed the snakes and scorpions in their path, and flattened the terrain before them to ease their way.

For these people to doubt YHVH's ability to conquer the "mighty inhabitants" of Canaan seems nothing less than ludicrous. Yet these were the people whose leaders said, "We cannot go up against these people, for they are mightier than we" and even He!

Where did they go wrong?

Chassidic master Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi explains that the problem was one of excess spirituality.
The daily miracles experienced by the generation of the Exodus did more than provide them with sustenance and protection -- they shielded them from any and all involvement with the material world. For the first generation of our existence as a people, they lived a wholly spiritual life, free of all material concerns; the very food which nourished them was "bread from heaven."

Indeed, it could not have been any other way. Our sages have said that, "The Torah could have been given only to the eaters of the manna." To properly receive and assimilate the divine wisdom, one must be utterly free of the responsibilities and frustrations of physical life -- something that is possible only in the kind of environment which our ancestors enjoyed during their sojourn in the Sinai Desert.

This is why, says Rabbi Schneur Zalman, the Spies and their generation were loath to enter the land. Becoming a people with a land would entail plowing, sowing and harvesting; it would mean engaging in commerce and levying taxes; it would require a bureaucracy to run the land and an army to defend it. Their underlying problem with the land was, as the spies expressed it, that "it is a land that consumes its inhabitants" -- it consumes one's time and energy with its corporeal demands and infringes on one's capacity to study the divine wisdom of Torah and meditate upon its truths. They were unwilling to relinquish their spiritual utopia for the entanglements of an earth-bound life.”

They would have to live day by day bearing the yoke of the Torah (Matt 11:29)

“Based on this, the Lubavitcher Rebbe explains the Spies' argument that "We cannot go up against these people, for they are mightier than we," notwithstanding the tremendous miracles which YHVH had performed and was performing for them. We cannot have it both ways, argued the spies. Either we are to be a spiritual people engaged exclusively in spiritual pursuits and sustained by supernatural means; or else we are to enter the natural world of the farmer, merchant and soldier and become subject to its laws. And under these laws -- which decree that the numerous, mighty and well-fortified will defeat the few and the weak -- there is no way we can defeat the inhabitants of Canaan.

They even went so far as to extend this line of reasoning to the Almighty Himself. If YHVH wishes for us to live a spiritual life, then, certainly, He can sustain us with miracles. But if His desire is that we abandon our supra-natural existence to enter the land and assume a natural life, then He Himself has decreed that natural law (and Torah) will govern our fate. In that case, He cannot empower us to miraculously conquer the land, since were He to do so, this would defeat the entire purpose of entering the "land." So "they are mightier than He" -- even YHVH cannot help us, if He Himself has chosen to transform us into a material people!

If the "generation of the desert" would have themselves been capable of making the transition into a people of the land, the transformation of the material world into a home for YHVH would have been fully and perfectly achieved in that very generation. If they would have believed in their divinely granted capacity to "have it both ways," their sanctification of the land would have combined their ultimate apprehension of the divine truth with a full involvement with the natural reality.

The generation of the desert failed to actualize the unique opportunity which presented itself at that particular juncture of our history: for there to be a single generation which straddled both worlds, a single generation which first inhabited a world of utter spirituality and then proceeded to apply it to a life on the land. Instead, they fell prey to the tendency of man to "compartmentalize" his life, to label his experiences and attainments as "material," "spiritual," "sacred," "mundane," "natural" and "supernatural," thereby delegating and confining them to their respective domains. (Christians cannot stop speaking about heaven)

What was the reason that the Spies, who were leaders of Yisrael and men of lofty stature, did not want to enter the Land?

The explanation of the matter is as follows:

A great majority of the physical mitzvot can be implemented only in the Land of Yisrael, especially the agricultural laws and the laws of the offerings brought to the Beit Ha Mikdash (Temple)... The Spies, who were on a most lofty spiritual level, did not wish to lower themselves to the level of physical action, preferring to remain in the desert, where they received all their needs from above, and related to YHVH by means of the loftier levels of thought and speech (i.e., study of Torah and prayer). They desired to draw down all the Divine emanations into the "Land of Yisrael" that exists in the realm of Malchut, the world of Divine speech, where there also is a "Yerushalayim" and a "Set Apart Temple." Regarding the physical Land of Yisrael, they said: "It is a land that consumes its inhabitants"--if the Divine light were to be drawn down into the physical world, our entire existence would be nullified.

But Yehoshua/Joshua and Calev/Caleb said, "The Land is very, very good." It is specifically in the Land of Yisrael down below, and specifically by means of the mitzvot implemented by physical action, that the truly infinite light of YHVH is drawn down--a light that includes both the spiritual and the material, which is why it is "very, very" good.

(Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi)
Based on the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Shneerson

Sadly in our modern era Christianity has been defined as the “opiate of the masses” (Karl Marx). This definition confirms the over spiritualizing our lives at the expense of walking a Torah obedient kind of life. We see this illustrated in the dietary laws, today many Christians believe the dietary laws have been done away with and now we need to see food in a  more spiritual light and we are no longer subject to physical  dietary laws stipulated by YHVH.

A modern day prophetess was recently quoted as saying that the church is totally unprepared for the physical reality which is about to manifest itself on the earth in the coming days. She went on to say that there was an increase in demonic activity that is presently establishing itself on the earth in our days that would bring great harm on many believers in the last days.

Rev 13:7  And it was given to him(the anti messiah) to fight with the set-apart ones and to overcome them. And authority was given to him over every tribe and tongue and nation.

Blessing for the Torah:

(Blessed are you, YHVH, our Elohim , King of the Universe,
you have selected us from among all the peoples,
and have given us your Torah. Blessed are you, YHVH, giver of the Torah. Ameyn.)

Haftarah: Yehosahu/Joshua 2:1-24

Significance of Number 37

We cannot enter (stay) in the land with our flesh and hearts uncircumcised.

37 times the words 'circumcision' and 'uncircumcision' (Torah, first Writings and Prophets) appear in the Tenakh. YHVH made a covenant with our father Avraham in B'reshith 17 involving circumcision. Those who were circumcised became part of the covenant and those who refused were cut off from the covenant. This is analogous to receiving the word of YHVH and your desire to be part of the covenant. ‘Yehudah/Judah' where Yahshua was born appears thirty seven times in the scriptures. The golden lampstands in the Tabernacle appear thirty seven times in scripture as well.

Aliyah Rishon 13:1-20

Num 13:1  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,
Num 13:2  “Send – (“Shelach lecha” – send! You send)  men to spy out the land of Kenaʽan, which I am giving to the children of Yisra’ĕl. Send one man from each tribe of their fathers, everyone a leader among them.” Num 13:3  And by the command of יהוה Mosheh sent them from the Wilderness of Paran, all of them men who were heads of the children of Yisra’ĕl. (Paran is believed to be the same place as modern day Petra)
Midrash – a Messianic scholar recently stated that this verse implied that the spies were sent out to see how desperately overwhelming the circumstances were in the land. The implication is that only a series of major miraculous interventions from YHVH would be able to save them from being completely destroyed by the inhabitants of the land. The inhabitants of the land were not only physically intimidating but were also steeped in occultic power and practices which caused great fear to come into any potential enemy.
Today we too need to trust YHVH to show us the true reality of what is happening in our world and that only His miraculous powerful intervention will be able to save us. I personally believe the situation in our world is far more serious than what most of us realize.
Vs 4-15 give the names of the leaders of the tribes. The tribe of Levi is excluded because YHVH was their inheritance. We must remember that these leaders did not bring back false reports, what they saw was real, they failed however to believe that YHVH would be able to deliver them, in spite of all the miracles they had witnessed in the wilderness.

Num 13:16 These are the names of the men whom Mosheh sent to spy out the land. And Mosheh called Hoshĕa the son of Nun, Yehoshua.

This is the first time a “yud” is added to “Yoshua's/Joshua’s” name. His name  becomes  “Yahoshua/Yehoshua” the same name Hebrew name was used for our Messiah. This name means that “YHVH” will save or help.

Num 13:17  And Mosheh sent them to spy out the land of Kenaʽan, and said to them, “Go up here into the South, and go up to the mountains,
Num 13:18  and see what the land is like, and the people who dwell in it, whether strong or weak, whether few or many,
Num 13:19  and whether the land they dwell in is good or evil, whether the cities they inhabit are in camps or strongholds,
Num 13:20  and whether the land is rich or poor, and whether there are forests there or not. And you shall be strong, and bring some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the season of the first-fruits of grapes.

Aliyah Sheni 13:21-14:7

The scouts spent forty days spying the land. They returned to the Yisraelite encampment with specimens of Canaan's produce, and with an ominous report. They conceded that the land flowed with milk and honey, but they warned that its population was mighty and the cities well- fortified and impossible to conquer. Only Calev/ Caleb and Yehoshua/Joshua, the scouts representing the tribes of Yehudah/Judah and Ephrayim/Ephraim, dissented. They argued that the land was magnificent, and there was no reason for concern because YHVH could surely bring the Yisraelites victory in battle. The Hebrew  people spent that entire night wailing, expressing their preference to return to Mitsrayim/Egypt rather than be defeated in battle by the Canaanites.

Num 13:21  So they went up and spied out the land from the Wilderness of Tsin as far as Reḥoḇ, near the entrance of Ḥamath.
Num 13:22  And they went up through the South and came to Ḥeḇron. And Aḥiman, Shĕshai, and Talmai, the descendants of Anaq, were there. Now Ḥeḇron had been built seven years before Tsoʽan in Mitsrayim.
Num 13:23  And they came to the wadi Eshkol, and cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes. And they bore it between two of them on a pole, also of the pomegranates and of the figs.
Num 13:24  That place was called the wadi Eshkol, because of the cluster which the men of Yisra’ĕl cut down from there.
Num 13:25  And they returned from spying out the land after forty days.
Num 13:26  And they went and came to Mosheh and Aharon and all the congregation of the children of Yisra’ĕl in the Wilderness of Paran, at Qaḏĕsh. And they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.
Num 13:27  And they reported to him, and said, “We went to the land where you sent us. And truly, it flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.
Num 13:28  “But the people who dwell in the land are strong, and the cities are walled, very great. And we saw the descendants of Anaq there too.
Num 13:29  “The Amalĕqites dwell in the land of the South, while the Ḥittites and the Yeḇusites and the Amorites dwell in the mountains. And the Kenaʽanites dwell by the sea and along the banks of the Yardĕn.”
Num 13:30  And Kalĕḇ silenced the people before Mosheh, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are certainly able to overcome it.”
Num 13:31  But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.”
Num 13:32  And they gave the children of Yisra’ĕl an evil report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land eating up its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size.

Midrash -  “land eating up its inhabitants” implies that there is not enough produce to support everyone.

Hag 1:5  And now, thus said יהוה of hosts, “Consider your ways!
Hag 1:6  “You have sown much, but brought in little; eat, but do not have enough; drink, but you are not filled with drink; clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and he who earns wages, earns wages to put into a bag with holes.”
Hag 1:7  Thus said יהוה of hosts, “Consider your ways!

Num 13:33  “And we saw there the Nephilim, sons of Anaq, of the Nephilim. And we were like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and so we were in their eyes.”
Num 14:1  Then all the congregation lifted up their voices and cried, and the people wept that night.

The Hebrew word “nephilim” means “giants” the root verb of this word is “naphal” which means to fall. The Hebrew language kindly translates the word for giants as ones that must and will fall.

Num 14:2  And all the children of Yisra’ĕl grumbled against Mosheh and against Aharon, and all the congregation said to them, “If only we had died in the land of Mitsrayim! Or if only we had died in this wilderness!

Num 14:3  “And why is יהוה bringing us to this land to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should become a prey? Would it not be better for us to turn back to Mitsrayim?”
Num 14:4  And they said to each other, “Let us appoint a leader, and let us turn back to Mitsrayim.”
Num 14:5  Then Mosheh and Aharon fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Yisra’ĕl.
Num 14:6  And Yehoshua son of Nun, and Kalĕv son of Yephunneh, who were among those who had spied out the land, tore their garments,
Num 14:7  and they spoke to all the congregation of the children of Yisra’ĕl, saying, “The land we passed through to spy out is an exceedingly good land.

Aliyah Shlishi 14:8 – 25

The Yisraelites rejected the pleas of Yehoshua and Calev, and decided to stone them. YHVH intervened, His Esteem appearing over the Tabernacle. YHVH informs Moshe of His decision to instantaneously wipe out the Yisraelites in a massive plague due to their persistent lack of faith. Moshe successfully invoked YHVH's mercy and pointed out that this mass execution will cause a mammoth scandal on YHVH's name. "People will assume that YHVH lacked the power to defeat the Canaanites in battle, so He instead slaughtered His people," Moshe argued. Although YHVH agreed not to immediately wipe out the Yisraelites, that generation would not enter the Land. YHVH instructs Israel to reverse course, and to head back to the desert.
Num 14:8  “If יהוה has delighted in us, then He shall bring us into this land and give it to us, ‘a land which is flowing with milk and honey.’
Num 14:9  “Only, do not rebel against יהוה, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread. Their defense has turned away from them, and יהוה is with us. Do not fear them.”
Num 14:10  But all the congregation said to stone them with stones. Then the esteem of יהוה appeared in the Tent of Meeting before all the children of Yisra’ĕl.
Num 14:11  And יהוה said to Mosheh, “How long shall I be scorned by these people? And how long shall I not be trusted by them, with all the signs which I have done in their midst?
Num 14:12  “Let Me smite them with the pestilence and disinherit them, and make of you a nation greater and mightier than they.”
