Parashat 9 Portion 34 – Vayeshev- “He settled” - Beresheet 37:1-36 Haftorah: Yirmeyahu 38:1-13 – Matt 3:3-17

Number Nine.
The 9th letter of the Aleph-bet is the letter “tet”, which can mean “to surround with goodness”.
The number nine paints a picture of bearing fruit and giving.

Gal 5:22,23  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, trustworthiness,  gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no Torah (there is no specific instruction given concerning the measure of the giving and the receiving of these gifts ).

1 Corinthians 12:7-10  mentions the nine gifts of the Ruach Ha kodesh.

Blessing for the Torah:
Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-O’lam, asher bachar banu m’kol ha-amim,
v’natan lanu eht Torah-to. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”

(Blessed are you, YHVH, our Elohim , King of the Universe,
you have selected us from among all the peoples,
and have given us your Torah. Blessed are you, YHVH, giver of the Torah. Ameyn.)
The single greatest tragedy of the Common Era is the misunderstanding of the mission of Yahshua. One of the most neglected and misunderstood statements Yahshua ever made is found in Mat 15:24.

Mat 15:24  ויען ויאמר לא שלחתי בלתי אל־הצאן האבדות אשר לבית ישראל׃
Mat 15:24  And He answering, said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Yisra’ĕl.”

“Long ago, a wonderful rabbi acted as our kinsman redeemer and sent messengers around the world to find us.”
The clear prophetic image of the coming Messiah was that he would bring together the lost sheep of the house of Yisrael.
Yir/ Jer 50:6  “My people have been wandering1 sheep. Their shepherds have led them astray, turning them away on the mountains. They have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their resting place. Footnote: 1Or lost, or straying, or perishing.

Yochanan/John 10:14  “I am the good shepherd.1 And I know Mine, and Mine know Me, Footnote: 1Ezek. 34:11-12, Heb. 13:20, 1 Peter 2:25, 1 Peter 5:4.
Joh 10:15  even as the Father knows Me, and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep.
Joh 10:16  “And other sheep I have which are not of this fold – I have to bring them as well, and they shall hear My voice, and there shall be one flock, one shepherd.1 Footnote: 1Ezek. 34:23, Ezek. 37:24.
Rom 11:24  For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree, how much more shall these who are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?
Rom 11:25  For I do not wish you to be ignorant of this secret, brothers, lest you should be wise in your own estimation, that hardening in part has come over Yisra’ĕl, until the completeness of the gentiles1 has come in. Footnote: 1Gen. 48:19.

Eze 34:11  ‘For thus said the Master יהוה, “See, I Myself shall search for My sheep and seek them out.
Eze 34:12  “As a shepherd seeks out his flock on the day he is among his scattered sheep, so I shall seek out My sheep and deliver them from all the places where they were scattered in a day of cloud and thick darkness.
Eze 34:13  “And I shall bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the lands, and shall bring them to their own land. And I shall feed them on the mountains of Yisra’ĕl, in the valleys, and in all the dwellings of the land.

Maybe the above prophecy  is the true reality of how we came into this wonderful messianic restoration. We cannot really claim responsibility for where we are, most of us are under the firm conviction that the initiative for this wonderful transition that has taken place in our lives comes from YHVH and Him alone.

Maybe it’s time for deep repentance from those who call themselves believers in Messiah – WE HAVE ALL FAILED TO REALIZE HIS MISSION AND HAVE ALL MISREPRESENTED HIM FOR TOO LONG.

1Pe 2:25  For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your lives.

Churchman have hijacked the mission of Messiah but claiming that he had another agenda – found in an evil theology called “replacement theology” which basically states that the church has replaced Yisrael. This is a lie from the pit of hell; a lie that makes an absolute mockery of the mission of Messiah.

Rom 1:16  For I am not ashamed of the Good News of Messiah, for it is the power of Elohim for deliverance to everyone who believes, to the Yehuḏite first and also to the Greek.

If the “good  news” we preach is not primarily aimed at the lost house of Yisrael we manifest a contempt of Messiah’s mission.
The words of Shaul addresses such a group of people:

2Co 11:3  But I am afraid, lest, as the serpent deceived Ḥawwah by his trickery, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Messiah.
2Co 11:4  For, indeed, if he who is coming proclaims another יהושע,1 whom we have not proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different Good News which you have not accepted, you put up with it well enough! Footnote: 1Mt. 24:5 & 23-24, John 5:43.

The ancient Sages believed that when the Messiah came for the first time he would be "lowly and riding upon an ass." This is what the Talmud teaches in Sanh.98a. When He comes the second time he will rule as King of Kings.

To explain what seemed like a contradiction they concluded that there must be two different Messiahs. The one who would suffer and die was given the title Mashiach ben Yosef (Messiah son of Joseph) and one who would reign as king was given the title Mashiach ben David (Messiah son of David). What becomes evident in the progressive revelation of the Prophets is that these suffering and reigning Messiahs are actually fulfilled in one Messiah, Yahshua/Yeshua, for He comes suffers, raises from the dead, ascends and then will return a second time to rule and reign. He is both Mashiach ben Yosef and Mashiach ben David.

Our Torah portion begins:

Gen 37:1  And Yaʽaqoḇ dwelt in the land of his father’s sojournings, in the land of Kenaʽan.

The Hebrew word for “sojournings” comes from the Hebrew word “ger” which can mean a stranger, a foreigner, a convert to the faith of Yisrael. The idea of our fathers being sojourners is that they didn’t fit it where they had come from, they felt out of place.

When we eventually return to the land NEVER TO LEAVE AND BECOME STRANGERS AGAIN – we will proclaim – “home at last, home at last thank YHVH Almighty we are home at last” (adapted from the words found on the tomb of the late Dr Martin Luther King – “Free at last free at last thank G-D Almighty Im free at last)

Gen 37:2  This is the genealogy of Yaʽaqoḇ. Yosĕph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers. And the young man was with the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives. And Yosĕph brought an evil report of them to his father.

It speaks of the “toldot” or genealogy of Yakov but then it goes on to tell the story of Yosef. Why? Because Yosef’s life is an amazing prophetic fulfillment of how the Messiah would accomplish the gathering of the 12 tribes of Israel to settle or “va yashev” in the land of Yisrael one day, again, forever.

We who are not Jewish and believe and desire to be part of Yisrael can be compared to Yosef. The gentile nations came from Mennassah and Ephraim, Yosef’s two sons. We see prophetically that there is a great responsibility on the descendants of Yosef – even the birth right was given to the descendants of Yosef . However the story of Yosef seems to indicate that for a while the birthright will passed on to Yosef so that he could be instrumental in bringing about a restoration of Yisrael.

Ch 5:1  As for the sons of Re’uḇĕn the first-born of Yisra’ĕl – he was the first-born, but because he profaned his father’s bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Yosĕph, son of Yisra’ĕl, so that the genealogy is not listed according to the birthright,
1Ch 5:2  for Yehuḏah prevailed over his brothers, and from him came a ruler, although the birthright was Yosĕph’s

The scepter was given to Yehudah  until Shiloh returns – Beresheet 49:10)

Gen 49:10  “The sceptre shall not turn aside from Yehuḏah, nor a Lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh comes, and to Him is the obedience of peoples.

It is interesting to note that like Yosef Messiah also comes from Mitzraim/Egypt.

Mat 2:14  And rising up, he took the Child and His mother by night and departed for Mitsrayim,
Mat 2:15  and remained there until the death of Herodes, to fill what was spoken by יהוה through the prophet, saying, “Out of Mitsrayim I have called My Son.”1 Footnote:1Ex. 4:22-23, Hos. 11:1, Rev. 21:7

“ And Yosĕph brought an evil report of them to his father.”

In this context we believe evil or “ra-a” does not mean “lashon ha ra – a” or gossip, but Yosef was speaking the truth about their actions.

Gen 37:3  And Yisra’ĕl loved Yosĕph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a long robe.
Gen 37:4  But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and were not able to speak peaceably to him.

Yoch/Joh 15:25  but...that the word might be filled which was written in their Torah, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’ (Ps 35:19 – the Tenach/Old Testament was also quoted as being the Torah)

Gen 37:5  And Yosĕph dreamed a dream, and told it to his brothers. So they hated him even more.

Gen 37:6  And he said to them, “Please listen to this dream which I have dreamed:
Gen 37:7  “See, we were binding sheaves in the midst of the field, and see, my sheaf rose up and also stood up. And see, your sheaves stood all around and bowed down to my sheaf.”
Gen 37:8  And his brothers said to him, “Shall you indeed reign over us? Shall you indeed rule over us?” So they hated him even more for his dreams and for his words.

This dream seemed to refer to those on earth.

Gen 37:9  And he dreamed still another dream and related it to his brothers, and said, “See, I have dreamed another dream, and see, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars bowed down to me.”
Gen 37:10  And he related it to his father and his brothers. And his father rebuked him and said to him, “What is this dream that you have dreamed? Shall we, your mother and I and your brothers, indeed come to bow down to the earth before you?”

This dream seems to indicate that even messengers from heaven would bow before him.

Php 2:8  And having been found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, death even of a stake.
Php 2:9  Elohim, therefore, has highly exalted Him and given Him the Name which is above every name,
Php 2:10  that at the Name of יהושע every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,
Php 2:11  and every tongue should confess that יהושע Messiah is Master, to the esteem of Elohim the Father.

The Torah can only make sense when we understand that it all points to Yahshua – Rom10:4 For Messiah is the goal[1] of the ‘Torah unto righteousness’ to everyone who believes. Footnote:[ 1]Or end purpose; not termination.

Gen 37:11  And his brothers envied him, but his father guarded the word.

This reminds us of the words of Miriyam – mother of Yahshua.

Luk 2:16  And they came in haste and found Miryam and Yosĕph, and the baby lying in a feeding trough.
Luk 2:17  And having seen, they made known the matter which was spoken to them concerning the child.
Luk 2:18  And all those who heard marvelled at what the shepherds said to them.
Luk 2:19  But Miryam kept all these matters, considering them in her heart.
Luk 2:20  And the shepherds returned, boasting and praising Elohim for all they had heard and seen, as it was spoken to them.

Gen 37:12  And his brothers went to feed their father’s flock in Sheḵem.
Gen 37:13  And Yisra’ĕl said to Yosĕph, “Are not your brothers feeding the flock in Sheḵem? Come, I send you to them.” So he said to him, “Here I am.”
Gen 37:14  And he said to him, “Please go and see if it is well with your brothers and well with the sheep, and bring back word to me.” So he sent him out of the Valley of Ḥeḇron, and he went to Sheḵem.

This is also an unusual statement made here in the Torah. First of all Hebron is situated on a hill and not on a valley – valleys are sometimes referred to as places of despair and even death.
Psa 23:4  When I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil. For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

Why would Yakov send Yosef to Shechem? The very place where Yakov and his sons had to flee for their lives after Yakov’s sons deceived and killed the inhabitants of the city of Shechem.
Is this not what YHVH did with His son – He knowingly sent him to his death????????

Gen 37:15  And a certain man found him, and see, he was wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, “What do you seek?”
Gen 37:16  And he said, “I am seeking my brothers. Please inform me where they are feeding their sheep.”
Gen 37:17  And the man said, “They have left here, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go towards Dothan.’ ” So Yosĕph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan.

“Dothan” means a place of “two wells” In Aramaic Dothan can mean “double law” The reference here is obvious, the brothers of Yosef were not in “good place” because they were not been established in the Torah of YHVH alone, they were drinking from another law or well as well. This is the sad state of mankind up to this day. We seek life where no life can be found. We seek life from YHVH’s Law and from manmade law.

Yochanan/Joh 15:18  “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you.
Joh 15:19  “If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, for that reason the world hates you.
Joh 15:20  “Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they shall persecute you too. If they have guarded My Word, they would guard yours too.
Joh 15:21  “But all this they shall do to you because of My Name, because they do not know Him who sent Me.
Joh 15:22  “If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.
Joh 15:23  “He who hates Me hates My Father as well.
Joh 15:24  “If I did not do among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin. But now they have both seen and have hated both Me and My Father,
Joh 15:25  but...that the word might be filled which was written in their Torah, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’

Joh 16:1  “These words I have spoken to you, so that you do not stumble.
Joh 16:2  “They shall put you out of the congregations, but an hour is coming when everyone who kills you shall think he is rendering service to Elohim.
Joh 16:3  “And this they shall do to you because they did not know the Father, nor Me.

Gen 37:18  And they saw him from a distance, and before he came near them, they plotted against him, to kill him.
Gen 37:19  And they said to each other, “See, this master of dreams is coming!
Gen 37:20  “Now, then, come and let us now kill him and throw him into some pit, and shall say, ‘Some wild beast has devoured him.’ Let us then see what comes of his dreams!”
Gen 37:21  But Re’uḇĕn heard and rescued him from their hands, and said, “Let us not take his life.”
Gen 37:22  And Re’uḇĕn said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and do not lay a hand on him” – in order to rescue him out of their hands, and bring him back to his father.

Parashat 8 Portion 33- Beresheet/Gen 35:9-36:43 -Haftorah: Yesh 43:1-7 – Matt 11:25-30

Ameyn.)

Last week our focus was on a set apart community that YHVH will once again restore so that the nations can bring esteem to YHVH.
This week the focus is more on individual leadership and the price that one is required to pay in order for a set apart community to stay together and achieve its goal and destiny to bring the nations back to the Torah of YHVH.

Gen 35:9  And Elohim appeared to Yaʽaqoḇ again, when he came from Paddan Aram, and blessed him.

Only the blessing of YHVH on leaders will be sufficient for them to bring YHVH’s people back into the land and into their destiny and calling.

This verse says Yakov came from Paddan Aram, however we know from the context that Yakov actually came from Shechem. Why does the writer not mention this fact?

Shechem was not meant to be Yakov’s destination, it was meant to only be a transition for him reaching his destiny in Beit-El, what would later be called Yerushalayim.
Perhaps one of the greatest dangers that face the true seekers after the truth is the danger of seeking a comfort zone and becoming satisfied with past revelation/manna and not seeking our “fresh daily bread” from YHVH.
The cure to spiritual stagnation is a heart set on pilgrimage. This journey is not always comfortable as we realize that to reach our destination we must shake off some old ideas and embrace ancient truths that have been mostly neglected and rejected by most believers.
This is a dangerous journey and there are often casualties along the way.

Psa 84:5  Blessed is the man whose strength is in You, Your Highways are in their heart (Your pilgrim highways (to Tzion) are in their hearts).
Psa 84:6  Passing through the valley of weeping, They make it a fountain; The Teacher also covers it with blessings.
Psa 84:7  They go from strength to strength, Appearing before Elohim in Tsiyon.

Background history to Paddan Aram:

Paddan Aram means table of Aram.

Gen 10:22  The sons of Shĕm: Ěylam, and Asshur, and Arpaḵshaḏ, and Luḏ, and Aram.

It was in the tents of Shem that YHVH would choose to dwell.

Gen 9:27  “Let Elohim enlarge Yepheth, and He shall dwell in the tents of Shĕm. And let Kenaʽan become his servant.”

Paddan Aram was the first place Avram stopped over when he came out of Babylon.

Gen 11:31  And Teraḥ took his son Aḇram and his grandson Lot, son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Aḇram’s wife, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Kenaʽan. And they came to Ḥaran(also known as Paddan Aram) and dwelt there.

Later Avraham would send his head servant to Paddam Aram to find a wife for Yitzchak (Beresheet 24:10)

Later Yitzchak would send his own son Yakov on a journey to the same place to find a wife.

Gen 28:5  So Yitsḥaq sent Yaʽaqoḇ away, and he went to Paddan Aram, to Laḇan son of Bethu’ĕl the Aramean, the brother of Riḇqah, the mother of Yaʽaqoḇ and Ěsaw.

Yehudah/Judah comes from Paddan Aram.

Gen 46:15  These were the sons of Lĕ’ah, whom she bore to Yaʽaqoḇ in Paddan Aram, with his daughter Dinah. All the beings, his sons and his daughters, were thirty-three.

Before the Yisraelites could enter the land of Yisrael they needed to confess before a priest the following:

Deu 26:5  “And you shall answer and say before יהוה your Elohim, ‘My father was a perishing Aramean, and he went down to Mitsrayim and sojourned there with few men. And there he became a nation, great, mighty, and numerous.

The Hebrew word for “perishing” is “abad” and can also mean lost.

Why would this be so? Perhaps the answer is that as long as Yisrael is not in the land they are in danger of being lost. Yisrael in the diaspora is merely a time of preparation for their return.

It is also significant that we remember that the language our Master spoke while on earth was Aramaic.

Lesson to be learned:

Paddan Aram can be very deceiving – we might speak the right language and pride ourselves for having crossed the Euphrates from Babylon- we are born again, but we have not yet crossed the Yarden (Jordan) river. Spiritually Paddan Aram is very very far away from Yerushalyim and only a relative few survive the journey. Paddan has a spiritual appearance but it is a defiled spirituality that it has taken over from Babylon and refined to have an acceptable outward appearance. In Paddan Aram you will hear the same old stories again and again because the leaders want to do everything in their power to keep you in Paddan Aram.

One of the best things we can do for ourselves is remind ourselves as often as we can where we have come from and where we are going and that we never want to return back to Paddan Aram.

Gen 35:10  And Elohim said to him, “Your name is Yaʽaqoḇ, your name is no longer called Yaʽaqoḇ, but Yisra’ĕl is your name.” So He called his name Yisra’ĕl. (Footnote  Beresheet/Gen 32:28 - Yisra’ĕl means “to strive with Ěl, to overcome with Ěl, (then) to rule with Ěl”)

The remnant that overcome will receive new names from YHVH.

Rev 2:17  “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies. To him who overcomes I shall give some of the hidden manna to eat. And I shall give him a white stone, and on the stone a renewed Name written which no one knows except him who receives it.” ’

Rev 3:12  “He who overcomes, I shall make him a supporting post in the Dwelling Place of My Elohim, and he shall by no means go out. And I shall write on him the Name of My Elohim and the name of the city of My Elohim, the renewed Yerushalayim, which comes down out of the heaven from My Elohim, and My renewed Name.

Gen 35:11  And Elohim said to him, “I am Ěl Shaddai. Bear fruit and increase, a nation and a company of nations shall be from you, and sovereigns come from your body.
Gen 35:12  “And the land which I gave Aḇraham and Yitsḥaq I give to you. And to your seed after you I give this land.”

This is the reward for His chosen leaders and people.

Gen 35:13  And Elohim went up from him in the place where He had spoken with him.
Gen 35:14  And Yaʽaqoḇ set up a standing column in the place where He had spoken with him, a monument of stone. And he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it.

Once again Yakov finds himself at Beit-El (28:18,19) This time Yakov not only pours out oil but also a “drink offering” The Hebrew word is “nasach” and this is the only place in Beresheet that this word is used.
We are reminded of the price that one would have to pay to bring the people of YHVH back in a proper relationship with Him.

We are reminded of our Master who emptied himself out for us.

Php 2:5  For, let this mind be in you which was also in Messiah יהושע,
Php 2:6  who, being in the form of Elohim, did not regard equality with Elohim a matter to be grasped,
Php 2:7  but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, and came to be in the likeness of men.
Php 2:8  And having been found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, death even of a stake.
Php 2:9  Elohim, therefore, has highly exalted Him and given Him the Name which is above every name,

Gen 35:15  And Yaʽaqoḇ called the name of the place where Elohim spoke with him, Bĕyth Ěl.
Gen 35:16  Then they set out from Bĕyth Ěl. And it came to be, when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, that Raḥĕl began to give birth, and had great difficulty giving birth.
Gen 35:17  And it came to be, as she was having great difficulty giving birth, that the midwife said to her, “Do not fear, for it is another son for you.”
Gen 35:18  And it came to be, as her life was going out – for she died – that she called his name Ben-Oni. But his father called him Binyamin.
Gen 35:19  So Raḥĕl died and was buried on the way to Ephrath, that is Bĕyth Leḥem.
Gen 35:20  And Yaʽaqoḇ set a standing column on her grave, which is the monument of Raḥĕl’s grave to this day.

‘Rachel's tomb is the third holiest site in Judaism.  Jews have made pilgrimage to the tomb since ancient times, and it has become one of the cornerstones of Jewish-Israeli identity.”- Wiki

Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 31:15: "There is a voice in Ramah; a lamentation; a very bitter cry; Rachel is weeping over her children; she refuses to be comforted about her children because they are not."

What will Yirmeyahu/ Jeremiah say here?  He pictures the misery. The ten tribes–the dominion of Ephraim–have been transported. Ephraim is the foremost tribe. All ten tribes are named after him and Ephraim is a son of Yosef/Joseph. Furthermore, Yosef is a son of Rachel. Consequently, Rachel's children are those being transported.

Mat 2:17 Then was filled what was spoken by Yirmeyahu the prophet, saying,
Mat 2:18 “A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and weeping, and great mourning – Raḥĕl weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted, because they were no more.”

This is where king Herod came to kill all infant boys under age 2 years in Ramah which is a village close to Bethlehem – Herod descendant of Esav/Esau.
Rachel embodies the spirit and heart of a true leader intercessor who is greatly disturbed and broken-hearted because of what has become of the common wealth of Yisrael.

Gen 35:21  And Yisra’ĕl set out and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Ěḏer (Migdal Edar).

This is possibly the very birth place of Messiah the perfect model of spiritual leadership.
According to Edersheim in The Life And Times Of Jesus The Messiah, in Book 2, Chapter 6, states, "This Migdal Edar was not the watchtower for the ordinary flocks that pastured on the barren sheep ground beyond Bethlehem, but it lay close to the town, on the road to Jerusalem. A passage from the Mishnah (Shekelim 7:4) leads to the conclusion that the flocks which pastured there were destined for Temple sacrifices..."
In addition, Migdal Edar is also mentioned by the Targums and is translated “The Anointed One of the flock of Israel”.  Thus, Targum Yonatan, cited by Rabbi Munk, paraphrases Genesis 35:23 and Micah 4:8, "He spread his tent beyond Migdal Edar, the place where King Messiah will reveal Himself at the end of days." What are we to make of all of this information from the writings of the rabbis? First, we know that Migdal Edar was the watchtower that guarded the Temple flocks that were being raised to serve as sacrificial animals in the Temple. These were not just any flock and herd. The shepherds who kept them were men who were specifically trained for this royal task. They were educated in what an animal, that was to be sacrificed, had to be and it was their job to make sure that none of the animals were hurt, damaged, or blemished.” These lambs were apparently wrapped in "swaddling cloths" to protect them from injury and also used to wrap the Lord Jesus.
Thus, with the establishment of Temple worship in Jerusalem, the fields outside of Bethlehem became the place where a special group of shepherds raised the lambs that were sacrificed in the Temple. Being themselves under special Rabbinical care, they would strictly maintain a ceremonially clean stable for a birthing place. The Tower of the Flock was used for birthing ewes, and the surround fields were where these shepherds grazed their flocks. These shepherds customarily kept their flocks outdoors twenty-four hours a day every day of the year, but brought the ewes in to deliver their lambs where they could be carefully cared for. It was to this place that Joseph took Mary. It was in this special stable at “Migdal Edar” that Christ was born! How do we know? The Micah 4:8 tells us so!

Mic 4:8  “And you, O tower of the flock (Migdal Edar), stronghold of the daughter of Tsiyon, it shall come to you, the former rule shall come, the reign of the daughter of Yerushalayim.” End of quote.

We now come to the record of the two genealogies of Yakov and Esav. What must have been going on in Yakov’s mind when he went through the names? Each name carried a history and often the history was a sad history.
We do well to remind ourselves that we may claim Yakov as our father, but our uncle is Esav and Esav’s children are our cousins whether we like it or not.

The greatest challenge a leader faces is his own as well as his family’s brokenness. How the leader deals with these challenges will determine whether in the eyes of YHVH he has succeeded or failed.

In our haftarah reading we read:

Yeshayahu/Isa 43:1  But now, thus said יהוה, your Creator, O Yaʽaqoḇ, and He who formed you, O Yisra’ĕl, “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name, you are Mine.
Isa 43:2  “When you pass through the waters, I am with you; and through rivers, they do not overflow you. When you walk through fire, you are not scorched, and a flame does not burn you.
Isa 43:3  “For I am יהוה your Elohim, the Set-apart One of Yisra’ĕl, your Saviour; I gave Mitsrayim for your ransom, Kush and Seḇa in your place.
Isa 43:4  “Since you were precious in My eyes, you have been esteemed, and I have loved you. And I give men in your place, and peoples for your life.
Isa 43:5  “Do not fear, for I am with you. I shall bring your seed from the east, and gather you from the west.
Isa 43:6  “I shall say to the north, ‘Give them up!’ And to the south, ‘Do not keep them back!’ Bring My sons from afar, and My daughters from the ends of the earth –
Isa 43:7  all those who are called by My Name, whom I have created, formed, even made for My esteem.”
Isa 43:8  He shall bring out a blind people who have eyes, and deaf ones who have ears.

Note vs 8 EVEN THOSE WHO DON’T DESERVE TO BE PART OF YISRAEL WILL BE PART OF YISRAEL.

Gen 35:22  And it came to be, when Yisra’ĕl dwelt in that land, that Re’uḇĕn went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine. And Yisra’ĕl heard about it. Now the sons of Yaʽaqoḇ were twelve:
Gen 35:23  the sons of Lĕ’ah were Re’uḇĕn, Yaʽaqoḇ’s first-born, and Shimʽon, and Lĕwi, and Yehuḏah, and Yissasḵar, and Zeḇulun;
Gen 35:24  the sons of Raḥĕl were Yosĕph and Binyamin;
Gen 35:25  the sons of Bilhah, Raḥĕl’s female servant, were Dan and Naphtali;
Gen 35:26  and the sons of Zilpah, Lĕ’ah’s female servant, were Gaḏ and Ashĕr. These were the sons of Yaʽaqoḇ who were born to him in Paddan Aram.
Gen 35:27  And Yaʽaqoḇ came to his father Yitsḥaq at Mamrĕ, or Qiryath Arba, that is Ḥeḇron, where Aḇraham and Yitsḥaq had dwelt.
Gen 35:28  And the days of Yitsḥaq were one hundred and eighty years.
Gen 35:29  So Yitsḥaq breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people, aged and satisfied of days. And his sons Ěsaw and Yaʽaqoḇ buried him.

Gen 36:1  And this is the genealogy of Ěsaw, who is Eḏom.
Gen 36:2  Ěsaw took his wives from the daughters of Kenaʽan: Aḏah the daughter of Ělon the Ḥittite, and Oholiḇamah the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Tsiḇʽon the Ḥiwwite;
Gen 36:3  and Basemath, Yishmaʽĕl’s daughter, sister of Neḇayoth.
Gen 36:4  And Aḏah bore Eliphaz to Ěsaw, and Basemath bore Reʽuw’ĕl.
Gen 36:5  And Oholiḇamah bore Yeʽush, and Yaʽlam, and Qoraḥ. These were the sons of Ěsaw who were born to him in the land of Kenaʽan.

Parashat 8 Portion 32 – Beresheet 33:18- 35:8 Nahum 1:12-2:5 – Matt 5:38-48

Blessing for the Torah:
Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-O’lam, asher bachar banu m’kol ha-amim,
v’natan lanu eht Torah-to. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”

(Blessed are you, YHVH, our Elohim , King of the Universe,
you have selected us from among all the peoples,
and have given us your Torah. Blessed are you, YHVH, giver of the Torah. Ameyn.)

This Torah portion addresses another extremely critical issue on our journey in embracing the Torah and being conformed to the image of Messiah – the issue being – community.
The Torah/Covenant of YHVH can only be fulfilled in a community of set apart believers called and enabled by the Ruach of YHVH. Such a community is also known as the Kehelah, Yisrael, the assembly of called out ones – not the church in any of its current forms. The only way to become part of the true Yisrael of YHVH is to come out of the church and out of any form of manmade religion including various expressions of the Messianic movement that contradict the true essence of the called out community.

Covenant Community Adapted from Don Basham

The first Kehelah of Messiah was a community of people who were totally devoted to YHVH and His Torah. Their life together was charged with the “Ruach’s power”. They loved each other with a radical kind of love. They took off their masks and shared their lives with one another. They laughed, cried, prayed, sang, and served together in real Messianic fellowship.  Those who had plenty shared freely with those who lacked. Social and economic barriers melted away. People related together in ways that bridged gender and racial chasms. They celebrated cultural differences. Acts 2 tells us that this “kehelah” (assembly) offered unbelievers a vision of life. A vision that was so beautiful that it took their breath away. It was so bold, so creative, and so dynamic that they couldn’t resist it. Verse 47 tells us that, “the Master added to their numbers daily those who were being saved.”

 Definition of a Covenant Community

A community of YHVH’s redeemed people:
·         bound together in the covenant love and truth of the Torah
·         submitted to compassionate authority
·         manifesting peace and set apartness
·         supporting family fidelity (expressed in revered fatherhood and manhood, cherished motherhood and womanhood, secure and obedient children)
A community where:
·         loving correction and instruction produce healthy growth and maturity
·         dedication to excellence produces the finest in crafts, trades, and commerce
·         prosperity and abundance for all its members is provided
A community of:
·         faith (The Faith)
·         worship
·         praise
·         selfless ministry
·         manifestation, individually and corporately, of the gifts of the Ruach of YHVH.

A covenant community – Yisrael - is the place YHVH has chosen to conform us into the image of His Son Yahshua Ha Mashiach and in so doing bringing the light of His Redemption to the nations.

There was always meant to be ONLY ONE true expression of GENUINE SAVING BELIEF.
Eph 4:1  I call upon you therefore, I the prisoner of the Master, to walk worthily of the calling with which you were called,
Eph 4:2  with all humility and meekness, with patience, bearing with one another in love,
Eph 4:3  being eager to guard the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace –
Eph 4:4  one body and one Spirit(Ruach), as you also were called in one expectation of your calling,
Eph 4:5  one Master, one belief, one immersion,
Eph 4:6  one Elohim and Father of all,1 who is above all, and through all, and in you all. Footnote: 1Mk. 12:32,34, 1 Cor. 8:6, 1 Tim. 2:5, Mk. 12:29-34.

Our Torah portion begins:

Gen 33:18  And Yaʽaqoḇ came safely to the city of Sheḵem, which is in the land of Kenaʽan, when he came from Paddan Aram. And he pitched his tent before the city.
The Hebrew word for “safely” is “shalem” (8003) BDB Definition:
1) complete, safe, peaceful, perfect, whole, full, at peace
1a) complete
1a1) full, perfect
1a2) finished
1b) safe, unharmed
1c) peace (of covenant of peace, mind)
1c1) perfect, complete (of keeping covenant relation)

As Yisrael enters into the land YHVH is showing them how He intends them to live with Him and one another – in completeness and harmony.
Tragically this “shalem” was shortlived – see Eph 4:1-6 - the time is coming when this community will come together again forever.

Gen 33:19  And he bought the portion of the field where he had pitched his tent, from the children of Ḥamor, Sheḵem’s father, for one hundred qesitah.

This is one of the three places which the nations of the world cannot accuse Israel and say, "You have stolen them." The three places are: the Cave of Machpelah, the site of the Set Apart Temple, and the tomb of Yosef/Joseph at Shechem. The cave of Machpelah, as it is written (Genesis 23:16): "And Avraham weighed to Ephron the silver." The Temple: "So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold" (I Chronicles 21:25). And Yosef’s/ Joseph's tomb: "And [Yakov/Jacob] bought the piece of land for a hundred kesitah."
(Midrash Rabbah)

These are some of the most important pieces of real estate in the world because they are the gateways for Yisrael to once again legally and eternally possess the land of Yisrael. These three places will play a crucial role in the coming together of Yisrael from the nations. Our fathers will rise from the dead to take a position of authority in the age to come - cave of Machpelah. Shechem will serve as an extremely important entry point for the return of all the exiles. The purchase of the temple mount by David serves as the place where the temple will be rebuilt and the temple service restored when Messiah returns.

Gen 33:20  And he set up an altar there and called it Ěl Elohĕ Yisra’ĕl.
Gen 34:1  And Dinah, the daughter of Lĕ’ah, whom she had borne to Yaʽaqoḇ, went out to see the daughters of the land.

Here the trouble starts – why was Dinah seeking fellowship with those who held pagan beliefs and were outside her community of faith?
Is it possible that one of the reasons she went out to “see” is that those in her community of faith were not meeting her needs and so she had to look elsewhere to try and meet her needs?

The early Messianic community is described in the following way:

Act 2:42  And they were continuing steadfastly in the teaching of the emissaries,(Torah) and in the fellowship, and in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers. (Note the use of the definite article “the” three times)
Act 2:43  And fear came upon every being, and many wonders and signs were being done through the emissaries.
Act 2:44  And all those who believed were together, and had all in common,
Act 2:45  and sold their possessions and property, and divided them among all, as anyone might have need.
Act 2:46  And day by day, continuing with one mind in the Set-apart Place, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,
Act 2:47  praising Elohim and having favour with all the people. And the Master added to the assembly those who were being saved, day by day.

(The author of this study is not suggesting that those who are Messianic sell their possessions and distribute them among those who have need. The author recognizes that there was a context in which these words were written – Yerushalayim was about to be destroyed by the Romans.)

Gen 34:2  And Sheḵem, son of Ḥamor the Ḥiwwite, prince of the land, saw her and took her and lay with her, and humbled her.

The Torah says the following concerning such a situation:

Deu 22:28  If a man finds a girl, a virgin not engaged, and lays hold on her, and lies with her, and they are found,
Deu 22:29  then the man who lay with her shall give to the girl's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife. Because he has humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.

Why would Dinah wonder out among the Canaanites who were notoriously immoral?

Why was a suitable partner for Dinah not found within the community of faith?

Many young believers struggle to find suitable faith partners for marriage today.
Dinah’s brothers response was not Torah.

Gen 34:3  And his being clung to Dinah the daughter of Yaʽaqoḇ, and he loved the girl and spoke kindly to the girl.

There is no record of Dinah not wanting to be with Shekem. This most probably enraged her brothers even more.

Gen 34:4  And Sheḵem spoke to his father Ḥamor, saying, “Take this girl for me for a wife.”
Gen 34:5  And Yaʽaqoḇ heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter. Now his sons were with his livestock in the field, so Yaʽaqoḇ kept silent until they came.
Gen 34:6  And Ḥamor, the father of Sheḵem, went out to Yaʽaqoḇ to speak with him.
Gen 34:7  And the sons of Yaʽaqoḇ came in from the field when they heard it. And the men were grieved and very wroth, because he had done a senseless deed in Yisra’ĕl by lying with Yaʽaqoḇ’s daughter, which should not be done.

Intermarriage with Canaanites was strongly condemned by Yisrael. It still is.

2Co 6:14  Do not become unevenly yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness? And what fellowship has light with darkness?
2Co 6:15  And what agreement has Messiah with Beliyaʽal? Or what part does a believer have with an unbeliever?
2Co 6:16  And what union has the Dwelling Place of Elohim with idols? For you are a Dwelling Place of the living Elohim, as Elohim has said, “I shall dwell in them and walk among them, and I shall be their Elohim, and they shall be My people.”
2Co 6:17  Therefore, “Come out from among them and be separate, says יהוה, and do not touch what is unclean, and I shall receive you.
2Co 6:18  “And I shall be a Father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me, says יהוה the Almighty.”

Gen 34:8  But Ḥamor spoke with them, saying, “My son Sheḵem’s being longs for your daughter. Please give her to him for a wife.
Gen 34:9  “And intermarry with us, give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves,
Gen 34:10  and dwell with us, and let the land be before you. Dwell and move about in it, and have possessions in it.”
Gen 34:11  And Sheḵem said to her father and her brothers, “Let me find favour in your eyes, and whatever you say to me I give.
Gen 34:12  “Ask of me a bride price and gift ever so high, and I give according to what you say to me, but give me the girl for a wife.”
Gen 34:13  But the sons of Yaʽaqoḇ answered Sheḵem and Ḥamor his father, and spoke with deceit, because he had defiled Dinah their sister.
Gen 34:14  And they said to them, “We are not able to do this matter, to give our sister to one who is uncircumcised, for that would be a reproach to us.
Gen 34:15  “Only on this condition would we agree to you: If you become as we are, to have every male of you circumcised,
Gen 34:16  then we shall give our daughters to you, and take your daughters to us. And we shall dwell with you, and shall become one people.
Gen 34:17  “But if you do not listen to us and be circumcised, we shall take our daughter and go.”
Gen 34:18  And their words pleased Ḥamor and Sheḵem, Ḥamor’s son.

Note circumcision was a sign of the covenant faith of Avraham. This outward ceremony was seen as an act of conversion to the faith of Yisrael.
Sadly the same spirit prevails today where emphasis is laid on a conversion process that focuses on outward appearance only and not on the inner transformation of people’s hearts.

Gen 34:19  And the young man did not delay to do this because he delighted in Yaʽaqoḇ’s daughter. Now he was more respected than all the household of his father.
Gen 34:20  And Ḥamor and Sheḵem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke with the men of their city, saying,
Gen 34:21  “These men are at peace with us, so let them dwell in the land and move about in it. And see, the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters for us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.
Gen 34:22  “Only on this condition would the men agree to dwell with us, to be one people: if every male among us is circumcised as they are circumcised.
Gen 34:23  “Their herds and their possessions, and all their beasts, should they not be ours? Only let us agree with them, and let them dwell with us.”
Gen 34:24  And all who went out of the gate of his city listened to Ḥamor and Sheḵem his son; every male was circumcised, all who went out of the gate of his city.
Gen 34:25  And it came to be on the third day, when they were in pain, that two of the sons of Yaʽaqoḇ, Shimʽon and Lĕwi, Dinah’s brothers, each took his sword and came boldly upon the city and killed all the males.
Gen 34:26  And they killed Ḥamor and Sheḵem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah from Sheḵem’s house, and went out.
Gen 34:27  The sons of Yaʽaqoḇ came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.
Gen 34:28  They took their flocks and their herds, and their donkeys, and that which was in the city and that which was in the field,
Gen 34:29  and all their wealth. And all their little ones and their wives they took captive, and they plundered all that was in the houses.
Gen 34:30  And Yaʽaqoḇ said to Shimʽon and Lĕwi, “You have troubled me by making me a stench among the inhabitants of the land, among the Kenaʽanites and the Perizzites. And I am few in number, they shall gather themselves against me and shall smite me, and I shall be destroyed, my household and I.”
Gen 34:31  But they said, “Should he treat our sister like a whore?”

Gen 35:1  And Elohim said to Yaʽaqoḇ, “Arise, go up to Bĕyth Ěl and dwell there. And make an altar there to Ěl who appeared to you when you fled from the face of Ěsaw your brother.”
Gen 35:2  And Yaʽaqoḇ said to his household and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign mighty ones that are among you, and cleanse yourselves, and change your garments.
Gen 35:3  “And let us arise and go up to Bĕyth Ěl, and let me make there an altar to Ěl, who answered me in the day of my distress, and has been with me in the way which I have gone.”
Gen 35:4  So they gave Yaʽaqoḇ all the foreign mighty ones which were in their hands, and all their earrings which were in their ears. And Yaʽaqoḇ hid them under the terebinth tree which was near Sheḵem.
Gen 35:5  And they departed, and the fear of Elohim was upon the cities that were all around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Yaʽaqoḇ.
Gen 35:6  And Yaʽaqoḇ came to Luz, that is Bĕyth Ěl, which is in the land of Kenaʽan, he and all the people who were with him.
Gen 35:7  And he built there an altar and called the place El Bĕyth Ěl, because there Elohim appeared to him when he fled from the face of his brother.

This is perhaps a prophetic reference to the fact that as long as Yisrael are not connected to Yerushalayim and the Temple they will be vulnerable to idolatry. It will only be when the temple is rebuilt and the Messiah returns that we will be able to be completely transformed into the image of the Master and the Torah of YHVH.

Zec 6:12  and shall speak to him, saying, ‘Thus said יהוה of hosts, saying, “See, the Man whose name is the Branch1!(Messiah) And from His place He shall branch out, and He shall build the Hĕḵal (Temple) of יהוה. Footnote 1See 3:8.

Gen 35:8  And Deḇorah, Riḇqah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bĕyth Ěl under the terebinth tree. So the name of it was called Allon Baḵuth.
