Parashat 9 Portion 37 Beresheet/Gen 40:1-23 Haftarah: Amos 1:3-2:6 – Matt 5:1-16

Blessing for the Torah:
Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-O’lam, asher bachar banu m’kol ha-amim,
v’natan lanu eht Torah-to. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”

(Blessed are you, YHVH, our Elohim , King of the Universe,
you have selected us from among all the peoples,
and have given us your Torah. Blessed are you, YHVH, giver of the Torah. Ameyn.)

There is a very stern warning in the Haftarah portion. Severe judgment is pronounced by the prophet Amos on the heathen nations because of how they have treated others – but Yehudah and Yisrael do not escape the strong warning of impending judgment as well. This is a warning to us who call ourselves believers and become complacent because we think others deserve the judgments of YHVH and not us.

Amo 2:4  Thus said יהוה, “For three transgressions of Yehuḏah, and for four, I do not turn it back, because they have rejected the Torah of יהוה, and did not guard His laws. And their lies after which their fathers walked lead them astray.
Amo 2:5  “But I shall send fire upon Yehuḏah, and it shall consume the palaces of Yerushalayim.”
Amo 2:6  Thus said יהוה, “For three transgressions of Yisra’ĕl, and for four, I do not turn it back, because they sell the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of sandals,

To understand the essence of YHVH’s anger against Yisrael in this passage we need to understand the Hebrew expression used. The Hebrew is not talking about two different kinds of people – righteous and needy – the Hebrew uses a poetic parallel comparing righteous people to needy people. The scripture is saying that righteous people are sold for a pair of sandals or they are sold for the going rate. Sandals were exchanged when business deals were done. This really seems to anger YHVH – when righteous people are sold out for the price of popular opinion.

There always seems to be a righteous remnant who opposes the popular opinions of the church or synagogue and they are sold out so that the religious system can pursue its own unrighteous agenda.

If you want to get into big trouble with YHVH treat His people badly.

2Th 1:1  Sha’ul, and Sila, and Timothy, to the assembly of the Thessalonians in Elohim our Father and the Master יהושע Messiah:
2Th 1:2  Favour to you and peace from Elohim our Father and the Master יהושע Messiah.
2Th 1:3  We ought to give thanks to Elohim always for you, brothers, as it is proper, because your belief grows exceedingly, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing,
2Th 1:4  so that we ourselves boast of you among the assemblies of Elohim for your endurance and belief in all your persecutions and afflictions which you are bearing,
2Th 1:5  clear evidence of the righteous judgment of Elohim, in order for you to be counted worthy of the reign of Elohim, for which you also suffer,
2Th 1:6  since Elohim shall rightly repay with affliction those who afflict you,
2Th 1:7  and to give you who are afflicted rest with us when the Master יהושע is revealed from heaven with His mighty messengers,
2Th 1:8  in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know Elohim, and on those who do not obey the Good News of our Master יהושע Messiah,
2Th 1:9  who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Master and from the esteem of His strength, (maybe he is talking about some of the religious people of his day)
2Th 1:10  when He comes to be esteemed in His set-apart ones and to be admired among all those who believe in that Day, because our witness to you was believed.
2Th 1:11  To this end we always pray for you that our Elohim would count you worthy of this calling, and complete all the good pleasure of goodness, and the work of belief with power,
2Th 1:12  so that the Name of our Master יהושע Messiah is esteemed in you, and you in Him, according to the favour of our Elohim and the Master יהושע Messiah.

Our Torah portion begins:

Gen 40:1  And after these events it came to be that the cupbearer and the baker of the sovereign of Mitsrayim sinned against their master, the sovereign of Mitsrayim.
Gen 40:2  And Pharaoh was wroth with his two officers, the chief cupbearer and the chief baker.
Gen 40:3  So he put them in confinement in the house of the captain of the guard, in the prison, the place where Yosĕph was a prisoner.
Gen 40:4  And the captain of the guard put Yosĕph in charge of them, and he served them. So they were in confinement for some time.
Gen 40:5  Then the cupbearer and the baker of the sovereign of Mitsrayim, who were confined in the prison, dreamed a dream, both of them, each man’s dream in one night and each man’s dream with its own interpretation.
Gen 40:6  And Yosĕph came in to them in the morning and looked at them and saw that they were sad.
Gen 40:7  And he asked Pharaoh’s officers who were with him in confinement of his master’s house, saying, “Why do you look so sad today?”
Gen 40:8  And they said to him, “We each have dreamed a dream, and there is no one to interpret it.” And Yosĕph said to them, “Do not interpretations belong to Elohim? Relate them to me, please.”
Gen 40:9  So the chief cupbearer related his dream to Yosĕph, and said to him, “See, in my dream a vine was before me,
Gen 40:10  and in the vine were three branches, and it was as though it budded – its blossoms shot forth, and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes.
Gen 40:11  “And Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand. So I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.”
Gen 40:12  And Yosĕph said to him, “This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are three days.
Gen 40:13  “Yet, within three days Pharaoh is going to lift up your head and restore you to your place, and you shall put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand according to the former ruling, when you were his cupbearer.
Gen 40:14  “But remember me when it is well with you, and please show kindness to me. And mention me to Pharaoh, and get me out of this house.
Gen 40:15  “For truly I was stolen away from the land of the Heḇrews. And also I have done naught that they should put me into the dungeon.”
Gen 40:16  And the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, and he said to Yosĕph, “I also was in my dream and saw three white baskets were on my head,
Gen 40:17  and in the uppermost basket all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head.”
Gen 40:18  And Yosĕph answered and said, “This is the interpretation of it: The three baskets are three days.
Gen 40:19  “Yet, within three days Pharaoh is going to lift off your head from you and hang you on a tree. And the birds shall eat your flesh from you.”
Gen 40:20  And on the third day, Pharaoh’s birthday, it came to be that he made a feast for all his servants. And he lifted up the head of the chief cupbearer and of the chief baker among his servants,
Gen 40:21  and he restored the chief cupbearer to his post of cupbearer again, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand,
Gen 40:22  but he hanged the chief baker, as Yosĕph had interpreted to them.
Gen 40:23  And the chief cupbearer did not remember Yosĕph, but forgot him.

We remember that there is no idle word in the Torah –

Deu 32:46  he said to them, “Set your heart on all the words with which I warn you today, so that you command your children to guard to do all the Words of this Torah.
Deu 32:47  “For it is not a worthless Word for you, because it is your life, and by this Word you prolong your days on the soil which you pass over the Yardĕn to possess.”

The Torah does not just tell nice little stories about historical events, beneath every word is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. This is why students of the Torah love to Midrash – search – for possible meanings and application of the Torah readings.

Yasher 46
19 “And the butler, to whom Joseph had interpreted his dream, forgot Joseph, and he did not mention him to the king as he had promised, for this thing was from the Lord in order to punish Joseph because he had trusted in man.
20 And Joseph remained after this in the prison house two years, until he had completed twelve years.”
This teaches us that the kind of work and ministry YHVH has called a Yosef - people to do cannot and never will be accomplished by our own strength. The task is too big and impossible for men to achieve without the empowering of the Ruach of YHVH.

This is why Shaul prays -
2Th 1:11  To this end we always pray for you that our Elohim would count you worthy of this calling, and complete all the good pleasure of goodness, and the work of belief with power,
2Th 1:12  so that the Name of our Master יהושע Messiah is esteemed in you, and you in Him, according to the favour of our Elohim and the Master יהושע Messiah.

This Torah portion speaks about two very powerful covenantal symbols – bread and wine – these both are connected to people’s lives who want to get back into the presence of the king.

We understand now that these covenantal symbols reveal the nature of Messiah’s calling and ministry to bring us back into the presence of YHVH.

This Torah portion is about how people get into the presence of the KING.

The key is and always will be Yahshua.

The pattern is always the same -  Messiah the ‘bread of life broken for us’ can only become reality for us and sustain us when we receive the fullness of YHVH’s Ruach – the wine – so that we may enter into the covenant or presence of YHVH.

The only way we ever get to accomplish His purposes as co workers of His deliverance for His people is being in the closest possible unhindered fellowship with Him – Shema Yisrael ….

So bread and wine speak of YHVH’s desire to be as close as He can be with us and how Yahshua made it possible to be so.

Rev 3:19  “As many as I love, I reprove and discipline. So be ardent and repent.
Rev 3:20  “See, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I shall come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.

That’s why the Appointment of Shavuot is so important -  it is not only the giving of the Torah -  the bread -  but also the pouring out of the Ruach – the wine.

Eph 5:18  And do not be drunk with wine, in which is loose behaviour, but be filled with the Spirit,

Shaul warns that we are not to partake of the breaking of bread in an unworthy way.

1Co 11:28  But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup.
1Co 11:29  For the one who is eating and drinking unworthily, eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the body of the Master.
1Co 11:30  Because of this many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep.
1Co 11:31  For if we were to examine ourselves, we would not be judged.
1Co 11:32  But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Master, that we should not be condemned with the world.
1Co 11:33  So then, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another.
1Co 11:34  And if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, lest you come together for judgment. And the rest I shall set in order when I come. (Don’t use the gathering of the set apart ones as an opportunity to get a free meal)

The covenant Yahshua made with YHVH on our behalf is made real when we come together in unity to manifest in a corporate way what Yahshua did for us on his own.

How does one partake in an unworthy manner?

When we reject the Torah – the bread.
When we only want to be led by the Ruach and not want the word broken for us so that we may see that the two go together and cannot be isolated.

Our Master has shown us that he leaves the best wine until last – we are all waiting for a final outpouring of the Ruach of YHVH in these days that will revive the Torah and prepare the way for the return of our Master and Messiah.

Joe 2:23  And you children of Tsiyon, be glad and rejoice in יהוה your Elohim, for He shall give you the Teacher of Righteousness, and cause the rain to come down for you, the former rain and the latter rain, as before.
Joe 2:24  And the threshing-floors shall be filled with grain, and the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil.
Joe 2:25  “Then I shall repay you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the crawling locust, and the consuming locust, and the gnawing locust, My great army which I sent among you.
Joe 2:26  “Then you shall eat – eat and be satisfied – and shall praise the Name of יהוה your Elohim, who has done with you so wondrously. And My people shall never be put to shame.
Joe 2:27  “And you shall know that I am in the midst of Yisra’ĕl1, and that I am יהוה your Elohim and there is no one else. And My people shall never be put to shame. Footnote: 1See Isa. 24:23.
Joe 2:28  “And after this it shall be that I pour out My Spirit on all flesh. And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men dream dreams, your young men see visions.
Joe 2:29  “And also on the male servants and on the female servants I shall pour out My Spirit in those days.
Joe 2:30  “And I shall give signs in the heavens and upon the earth: blood and fire and columns of smoke,
Joe 2:31  the sun is turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and awesome day of יהוה.

“Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-‘Olam, asher natan lanu Toraht-emet,
v’chay-yeh o’lam nata-b’tochenu. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”

(Blessed are you Yahweh, our Elohim, King of the Universe,
you have given us your Torah of truth, and have planted everlasting life within our midst.
Blessed are you, Yahweh giver of the Torah – Ameyn

Parashat 9 Portion 36 Beresheet/Genesis 39:1-23 Haftarah:Yesh/Is 52:13 -53:12 Acts 16:16-40

Ameyn.)

“The Talmud [Shabbos 68B] reveals the heavenly deliberation which preceded Hashem's revelation and subsequent giving of the Torah to Moshe.
Rabi Yehoshua ben Levi taught: When Moshe ascended to the heavens (to receive the Torah) the ministering angels asked Hashem: What is a human being doing here amongst us?
Hashem answered: He has come to receive the Torah.
The angels responded: Are you going to give to flesh and blood the precious treasure that's been hidden away since the time before creation? What is man that he should be considered? Hashem, your glory should remain here in the heavens! “ End quote.

Joh 1:14  And the Word(Torah) became flesh and pitched His tent among us, and we saw His esteem, esteem as of an only brought-forth of a father, complete in favour and truth.
This week we once again consider the cost we make to follow the high calling of Elohim in Messiah.

Heb 3:1  Therefore, set-apart brothers, partakers of the heavenly calling, closely consider the Emissary and High Priest of our confession, Messiah יהושע,
Heb 3:2  who was trustworthy to Him who appointed Him, as also Mosheh in all His house.
Heb 3:3  For this One has been deemed worthy of more esteem than Mosheh, as much as He who built the house enjoys more respect than the house.

The book of Hebrews was written to Jews who had come to faith in Messiah and who were becoming weary of the enormous opposition they were enduring from the religious establishment for their faith.
The writer to Hebrews recognizes the calling and esteem given to Moshe and adds that Yashua’s  is given higher esteem than Moshe. Moshe acknowledges this in Deu 18:15  “יהוה your Elohim shall raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brothers. Listen to Him.Deu 18:19  ‘And it shall be, the man who does not listen to My Words which He speaks in My Name, I require it of him.

Act 3:22  “For Mosheh truly said to the fathers, ‘יהוה your Elohim shall raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brothers. Him you shall hear according to all matters, whatever He says to you.

Act 3:23  ‘And it shall be that every being who does not hear that Prophet1 shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ Footnote: 1Deut. 18:18-20.

There is no conflict between the ministry of Yahshua and Moshe. In fact when Yahshua return he will teach the nations the Torah from Yerushalayim – Yesh 2:2-3 And it shall be in the latter days that the mountain of the House of יהוה is established on the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills. And all nations shall flow to it.

And many peoples shall come and say, “Come, and let us go up to the mountain of יהוה, to the House of the Elohim of Yaʽaqoḇ, and let Him teach1 us His ways1, and let us walk in His paths1, for out of Tsiyon comes forth the Torah1, and the Word1 of יהוה from Yerushalayim.” Footnote: 1His ways, His paths, the teaching and the Word of יהוה are used synonymously.  .

We have a high calling- Heb 3:1  Therefore, set-apart brothers, partakers of the heavenly calling, closely consider the Emissary and High Priest of our confession, Messiah יהושע,

The calling and message of both Messiah and Moshe is the same, only Messiah is worthy of more esteem than Moshe.
Both Messiah and Moshe paid a high price for this calling – are we called to something different?

High calling comes with a high price.

The calling and message have not changed. For the most part the church has a different calling and message from that of Moshe and Messiah.
The message and calling is still the same - to bring in the lost sheep of the house of Yisrael – to return to the faith of their fathers – to return to the Torah of YHVH.

Mat 15:24  And He(Yahshua) answering, said, “I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Yisra’ĕl.”

In Messiah we are now grafted back into the vine of Yisrael – Rom 11.

Our Torah portion begins:

Gen 39:1  And Yosĕph had been taken down to Mitsrayim. And Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, a Mitsrite, bought him from the Yishmaʽĕlites who had taken him down there.

Note whenever the Torah speaks of going to Mitsrayim/ Egypt it always refers to ‘going down” to Mitsrayim/Egypt. Whenever the Torah speaks of going to Yisrael/Israel or Yerushalayim it says “going up.”

The chief executioner was most probably the captain of the guard. Yosef was fortunate to escape with his life after he was falsely accused by Potiphar’s wife.

Gen 39:2  And it came to be that יהוה was with Yosĕph, and he became a prosperous man, and was in the house of his master the Mitsrite.
Gen 39:3  And his master saw that יהוה was with him and that יהוה made all he did to prosper in his hand.
Gen 39:4  So Yosĕph found favour in his eyes, and served him, and he appointed him over his house, and gave into his hand all that he had.
Gen 39:5  And it came to be, from the time that he appointed him over his house and all that he had, that יהוה blessed the Mitsrite’s house for Yosĕph’s sake. And the blessing of יהוה was on all that he had in the house and in the field.

These words in Torah are perhaps allegorical and profoundly prophetic:

Many sincere believers have prospered and done well in the “house of Egypt” – which although appearing to be outwardly appealing is not where YHVH has called us to be.

Egypt or Mitsrayim means “restricted” and can be compared to a birth canal which points to the way we are born again into the kingdom of Elohim.

Usually some dramatic crisis needs to occur before we leave Egypt – often the false accusations of our brothers will cause us to land in “jail” – isolated and rejected by those who were once greatly blessed by our lives.

These false accusations come about because we refuse to submit to the false doctrines and teachings of a Babylonian/Egyptian religious system that teaches that it is ok to fornicate with false doctrines of men and reject the true doctrine of scriptures/Torah.

Gen 39:6  And he left in Yosĕph’s hand all that he had, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate. And Yosĕph was handsome in form and appearance.
Gen 39:7  And after these events it came to be that his master’s wife lifted up her eyes to Yosĕph and said, “Lie with me.”
Gen 39:8  But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has given into my hand all that he has.
Gen 39:9  “No one is greater in this house than I, and he has not withheld whatever from me but you, because you are his wife. And how shall I do this great evil and sin against Elohim?”
Gen 39:10  And it came to be, as she spoke to Yosĕph day by day, that he did not listen to her, to lie with her, to be with her.
Gen 39:11  And it came to be on a certain day, when Yosĕph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside,
Gen 39:12  that she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside.
Gen 39:13  And it came to be, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside,
Gen 39:14  that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in to us a Heḇrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice.
Gen 39:15  “And it came to be, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside.”
Gen 39:16  And she kept his garment with her until his master came home.
Gen 39:17  And she spoke to him these same words, saying, “The Heḇrew servant whom you brought to us came in to me, to mock me,
Gen 39:18  so it came to be, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside.”
Gen 39:19  And it came to be, when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying, “Your servant did to me according to these words,” that his displeasure burned.
Gen 39:20  Then Yosĕph’s master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the sovereign’s prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison.

Let’s have a look at some of the practical kinds of issues that can cause you and me to land up in “prison” – isolated and ostracized by our brethren.

1. When you begin to question the legitimacy of the church. Yahshua did not come to start a religion called Christianity or an organization called the church–in fact the word “church” never appears once in all of the original scriptures. Yahshua came for the lost sheep of Yisrael and He came to return Yisrael to the ancient paths of his fathers.

Jer 6:16  Thus said יהוה, “Stand in the ways and see, and ask for the old paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and find rest for yourselves. But they said, ‘We do not walk in it.’
Jer 6:17  “And I raised up watchmen over you, and said, ‘Listen to the sound of the ram’s horn!’ But they said, ‘We do not listen.’
Jer 6:18  “Therefore hear, you nations, and know, O congregation, what is upon them!
Jer 6:19  “Hear, O earth! See, I am bringing evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not listened to My words, nor My Torah – and they rejected it.

2. When one challenges the perception of who “G-d” is.

We know that He has a name – YHVH – we believe it is possibly pronounced Yahveh. We know that He alone is YHVH and that there is no other like Him.

Deu 6:1  “And this is the command, the laws and right-rulings which יהוה your Elohim has commanded, to teach you to do in the land which you are passing over to possess,
Deu 6:2  so that you fear יהוה your Elohim, to guard all His laws and His commands which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life, and that your days be prolonged.
Deu 6:3  “And you shall hear, O Yisra’ĕl, and shall guard to do, that it might be well with you, and that you increase greatly as יהוה Elohim of your fathers has spoken to you, in a land flowing with milk and honey.
Deu 6:4  “Hear, O Yisra’ĕl: יהוה our Elohim, יהוה is one!
Deu 6:5  “And you shall love יהוה your Elohim with all your heart, and with all your being, and with all your might.
Deu 6:6  “And these Words which I am commanding you today shall be in your heart,
Deu 6:7  and you shall impress them upon your children, and shall speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up,
Deu 6:8  and shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.
Deu 6:9  “And you shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

There is no “holy trinity” and Yahshua is not YHVH – say that and you will definitely land up in “prison” and many believers even Messianic believers will do all they can to discredit you.

3. When you begin to question the pagan origins of Christmas and Easter and want nothing to do with these Christianized pagan feasts and return to the Appointments/Feasts of YHVH as found in Leviticus 23. These are not so called ‘Jewish’ feasts they are YHVH’s covenantal Appointments (Moadim) with His people.

4. That YHVH has called us to gather on a Shabbat (the Seventh day of the week) and not on the First day of the week.

5. That eating pork and shell fish is an abomination to YHVH.

6. When well-meaning believers proclaim that we are no longer under the law but under grace and you challenge them declaring that the Torah or covenant of YHVH has never been done away with.
Mat 5:17  “Do not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets.1 I did not come to destroy but to complete. Footnote: 1The Law and the Prophets is a term used for the pre-Messianic Scriptures.
Mat 5:18  “For truly, I say to you, till the heaven and the earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall by no means pass from the Torah till all be done.1 Footnote: 1Lk. 16:17.
Mat 5:19  “Whoever, then, breaks one of the least of these commands, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the reign of the heavens; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens.

7. When you declare that YHVH will once again restore monogamous and polygynous patriarchal families on earth before Yahshua returns – when men take the responsibility of priesthood and not the woman. This issue will even cause your closest friends and family to turn against you.

Gen 39:21  But יהוה was with Yosĕph and extended kindness to him, and He gave him favour in the eyes of the prison warden.
Gen 39:22  And the prison warden gave into the hand of Yosĕph all the prisoners who were in the prison, and whatever was done there was his doing.
Gen 39:23  The prison warden did not look into any point that was under Yosĕph’s hand, because יהוה was with him. And whatever he did, יהוה made it prosper.

Yahshua has promised a great reward for those who are prepared to do “jail time.”

Mar 10:29  יהושע said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for the sake of Me and the Good News,
Mar 10:30  who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come, everlasting life.
Mar 10:31  “But many who are first shall be last, and the last first.”

Pro 11:31  See, the righteous in the earth shall be rewarded, How much more the wrong and the sinner!

(Blessed are you Yahweh, our Elohim, King of the Universe, you have given us your Torah of truth, and have planted everlasting life within our midst. Blessed are you, Yahweh giver of the Torah – Ameyn

Parashat 9 Portion 35 - Beresheet 38:1-30 Haftarah/Yesh 37:31-37 Matt 1:1-17

Blessing for the Torah:
Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-O’lam, asher bachar banu m’kol ha-amim,
v’natan lanu eht Torah-to. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”

(Blessed are you, YHVH, our Elohim , King of the Universe,
you have selected us from among all the peoples,
and have given us your Torah. Blessed are you, YHVH, giver of the Torah. Ameyn.)

This Torah portion reminds us that YHVH’s promise to bring about the promised Messiah through the bloodline of Yehudah did not change and in spite of man’s unfaithfulness YHVH remains faithful.

Gen 3:15  “And I put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed1. He shall crush your head, and you shall crush His heel.” Footnote: 1First promise of the Messiah.

Hebraically the heal can refer to our “halacha” the way we walk. Satan has often succeeded in causing our ways to be contrary to YHVH’s ways.
It is more significant than we realize that when Adam and Chava (Eve) became aware of their sin, they also became aware of their nakedness and covered themselves. It is noteworthy that Adam and Chava covered their genitals and not their eyes or ears.

It is generally believed that before they sinned they were covered with YHVH’s light.
The Hebrew word for "Light" is "OR", spelled "aleph  vav  resh"
(Remember, Hebrew is written from right to left)
The Hebrew word for "Skin" is also "OR", but is spelled "ayin  vav  resh.

“The letter Aleph represents an ox or bull, and means strength, leader, or first.  The letter Ayin is represented by an eye and means to see, know or experience!   Thus, when Adam and Chava  ate the forbidden fruit their eyes were opened and they began to know and experience good and evil.”
YHVH immediately seeks to make an atonement – at one ment – with man by covering them with a skin.
Gen 3:21  And יהוה Elohim made coats of skin (ayin vav resh) for the man and his wife and dressed them.

Man would have to wait until he would once again be covered by “the Perfect light of the world” – (Moshiach)  and so be restored to perfect fellowship with YHVH once again.
This promise of perfect restoration to YHVH is brought to our attention every time we engage in sexual intercourse becoming one with our covenant partner.

This Torah portion reminds us that sexual intercourse and the emission of the male seed can only take place according to the instruction given in the Torah.
This also reminds us that in reality only the true Yisrael can show the world what proper sexual conduct entails. Sadly this has not been the case even Yisrael has been deeply influenced by the world’s influence on sexuality.

Rom 8:6  For the mind of the flesh is death, but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace.
Rom 8:7  Because the mind of the flesh is enmity (hatred) towards Elohim, for it does not subject itself1 to the Torah of Elohim2, neither indeed is it able, Footnotes: 1Or does not obey. 2John 15:5, 1 John 4:4, 1 John 3:9, 1 John 5:18.
Rom 8:8  and those who are in the flesh are unable to please Elohim.

Yehudah means praise. This name is spelled “yud, hey, vav, daleth, hey”  –  the same as YHVH except with the “daleth” added. “Daleth” in Hebrew is symbolized as meaning a door. The tribe of Yehudah (Jews) were destined by the Almighty to show us the way back to YHVH. Messiah himself comes from this tribe – the way, the truth and the life back to YHVH. (Yoch/Jn14:6)

Yahshua himself said that salvation comes from the Jews (Yehudaim)
Yoch/Joh 4:22  “You worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because the deliverance is of the Yehuḏim.1 Footnote: 1Ps. 147:19, Isa. 2:3, Isa. 14:1, Isa. 56:6-8, Ezek. 47:22-23, Zech. 2:10-11, Zech. 8:23, Rom. 2:20, Rom. 3:2, Rom. 9:4, Rev. 21:12 & 24.

Zec 8:23  “Thus said יהוה of hosts, ‘In those days ten men from all languages of the nations take hold, yea, they shall take hold of the edge of the garment of a man, a Yehuḏite1, saying, “Let us go with you, for we have heard that Elohim is with you.” ’ ” Footnote: 1John 4:22.

Rom 3:1  What then is the advantage of the Yehuḏite, or what is the value of the circumcision?
Rom 3:2  Much in every way! Because firstly indeed, that they were entrusted with the Words of Elohim.1 Footnote: 1See 2:20.

Every word of YHVH is like a seed that brings life to all who receive it.
Gen 38:1  And at that time it came to be that Yehuḏah left his brothers, and turned aside to a man, an Aḏullamite whose name was Ḥirah.

This could really be a prophetic picture of how the destiny of Yehudah unfolded over the centuries.
Yehudah was and still is separated from his brothers.
Yehudah turned aside - The Hebrew states that from that time Yahudah left his brothers he “went down”….” “yered”
Yehudah will not be separated from his brothers forever.

There is no idle word in the Torah.

Why does the Torah mention the Adullamite whose name was Hirah?

H2437    חירה
chı̂yrâh  BDB Definition: Hirah = “a noble family”1) an Adullamite, the friend of Yehudah/Judah

H2357חרר
chârar BDB Definition:
1) (Qal) to be white, grow white, grow pale
Part of Speech: verb

H5726עדלּמי
‘ădûllâmı̂y BDB Definition:
Adullamite = see Adullam “justice of the people”
If we put these words together we can come to the following conclusion:

Yehudah turns aside to a man (Chirah) who represents justice and goodness; a man who comes from a noble family.
This man was a Canaanite and whatever he could offer Yehudah was PALE in comparison to what his inheritance and calling was amongst the tribes of Yisrael.

Ya’akov/James 4:4  Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity (hatred) with Elohim?1 Whoever therefore intends to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of Elohim. Footnote: 1Mt. 13:22, Lk. 4:5-6, Lk. 14:33, Rom. 12:2, 1 John 2:15-17.
Jas 4:5  Or do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose? Does the Spirit which dwells in us intensely crave unto envy?

“Intensely crave” in the Greek is as follows:

G1971 ἐπιποθέω epipotheō ep-ee-poth-eh'-o
From G1909 and ποθέω potheō (to yearn); to dote upon, that is, intensely crave possession (lawfully or wrongfully): - (earnestly) desire (greatly), (greatly) long (after), lust.

Relationships with the Canaanites were forbidden.

Devarim/Deu 7:1  “When יהוה your Elohim brings you into the land which you go to possess, He shall also clear away many nations before you: the Ḥittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Kenaanites and the Perizzites and the Ḥiwwites and the Yeḇusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you.
Deu 7:2  “And when יהוה your Elohim gives them over to you, you shall smite them and put them under the ban, completely. Make no covenant with them, and show them no favour.
Deu 7:3  “And do not intermarry with them – you do not give your daughter to his son, and you do not take his daughter for your son,
Deu 7:4  for he turns your sons away from following Me, to serve other mighty ones. Then the displeasure of יהוה shall burn against you and promptly destroy you.

Gen 38:2  And Yehuḏah saw there a daughter of a certain Kenaanite whose name was Shuwa. And he took her and went in to her.

Note we don’t even know what the name was of Yehudah’s wife.

The names in Messianic genealogies are clear and well kept, here we find no mention of her name. It’s almost as if the Torah is showing contempt for Yehudah’s actions.

Gen 38:3  So she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Ěr.
Gen 38:4  And she conceived again and bore a son, and she called his name Onan.
Gen 38:5  And she conceived yet again and bore a son, and called his name Shĕlah. And he was at Keziḇ when she bore him.

“Er” can mean to be awakened or sexually aroused. His name spelled backwards is “ra” which means evil.

“Onan” can mean “strong” and could imply the strength of self –control and determination to do what is evil in the Eyes of YHVH.

“Shelah” can mean “request” Tamar was waiting for Shelah to become her third husband but Yehudah delayed this and because of his fear about what happened to his first two sons was reluctant to give away his third son. Sometimes one can wait and wait and your expectations/requests are never realized.

Gen 38:6  And Yehuḏah took a wife for Ěr his first-born, and her name was Tamar.

According to the Midrash, Tamar was the daughter of Noach’s son (Ber Rabbah 85:10) Obviously she was the daughter of a foreigner who lived in Canaan. It would be inconceivable to believe that Tamar was of Canaanite decent as her offspring were to become part of the Messianic line.

Gen 38:7  But Ěr, Yehuḏah’s first-born, was evil in the eyes of יהוה, and יהוה took his life.
Gen 38:8  And Yehuḏah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife and marry her, and raise up an heir to your brother.”
Gen 38:9  And Onan knew that the offspring would not be his. And it came to be, when he went in to his brother’s wife that he spilled on the ground, lest he should give an offspring to his brother.
Gen 38:10  But what he did displeased יהוה, so He took his life too.
Gen 38:11  Then Yehuḏah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father’s house until my son Shĕlah is grown.” For he said, “Lest he also die as his brothers did.” And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.

Gen 38:12  And after a long time the daughter of Shuwa, Yehuḏah’s wife, died. And Yehuḏah was comforted, and went up to his sheep-shearers at Timnah, he and his friend Ḥirah the Aḏullamite.

Gen 38:13  And it was reported to Tamar, saying, “See, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”
Gen 38:14  And she took off her widow’s garments, and covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself, and sat at the entrance to Ěnayim which was on the way to Timnah. For she saw that Shĕlah was grown, and she was not given to him as a wife.
Gen 38:15  And Yehuḏah saw her, and reckoned her for a whore, for she had covered her face.
Gen 38:16  And he turned aside to her by the way, and said, “Please let me come in to you,” for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. And she said, “What do you give me to come in to me?”
Gen 38:17  And he said, “Let me send you a young goat from the flock.” And she said, “Do you give me a pledge until you send it?”

Gen 38:18  So he said, “What pledge should I give you?” And she said, “Your seal and your cord and your staff that is in your hand.” And he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him.

The offspring of Tamar would be part of the Messianic line – the signet ring speaks of royalty and the staff speaks of authority.

Gen 38:19  And she arose and went away, and removed her veil and put on the garments of her widowhood.
Gen 38:20  And Yehuḏah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Aḏullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand, but he did not find her.
Gen 38:21  And he asked the men of that place, saying, “Where is the cult prostitute who was beside the way to Ěnayim?” And they said, “There was no cult prostitute in this place.”
Gen 38:22  And he returned to Yehuḏah and said, “I have not found her. And the men of the place also said there was no cult prostitute in this place.”
Gen 38:23  And Yehuḏah said, “Let her take them for herself, lest we become despised, for I sent this young goat and you have not found her.”
Gen 38:24  And it came to be, about three months after, that Yehuḏah was informed, saying, “Tamar your daughter-in-law has whored, and see, she has conceived by whoring.” And Yehuḏah said, “Bring her out and let her be burned!”
Gen 38:25  When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, “By the man to whom these belong, I am pregnant.” And she said, “Please examine whose these are: the seal and the cord and the staff.”

Tamar uses the Hebrew words “haker na” meaning “please identify”. These were the very same words Yehudah used when he asked his father Yakov to identify the bloodied garments of his son Yosef in 37:22.
This is most probably why Yehudah is so quick to repent as he realizes his own guilt in this brother’s disappearance.

Gen 38:26  And Yehuḏah examined and said, “She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shĕlah my son.” And he never knew her again.
Gen 38:27  And it came to be, at the time for giving birth, that see, twins were in her womb.
Gen 38:28  And it came to be, when she was giving birth, that the one put out his hand. And the midwife took a scarlet thread and bound it on his hand, saying, “This one came out first.”
Gen 38:29  And it came to be, as he drew back his hand, that see, his brother came out! And she said, “How did you break through? This breach be upon you!” So his name was called Perets.
Gen 38:30  And afterward his brother came out who had the scarlet thread on his hand. So his name was called Zeraḥ.

Peretz is a picture of Messiah who “breaks forth” The red string speaks of redemption and it appears only for a short time, as Messiah appeared first only for a short time.
Apparently it is highly unlikely that an unborn child will cause one of his limbs to protrude from his/her mother before they are born. This was a highly unusual event pointing us to Messiah.

Some practical guidelines on sexuality as found in the Talmud (All of these are not necessarily the views of the author of this study)

The Rabbinic requirement of regular relations in a marriage does put some responsibility on the wife. It is considered desirable for her to solicit her husband to the act. (Nevertheless, the laws of modesty suggest that she be a bit less brazen and subtler than her husband.) "R Samuel b. Hahmani, citing R. Johanan, stated: A woman who solicits her husband to the (marital) obligation will have children the like of whom did not exist even in the generation of Moses. (Eruvin 100b)

Jewish Law is concerned not only with the frequency of the act but with the manner in which it is performed. The Talmud recommends nudity:
"R. Joseph taught: ‘Her flesh’ implies close bodily contact, i.e., that he must not treat her in the manner of the Persians who perform their conjugal duties in their clothes. This provides support for a ruling of R. Huna who laid down that a husband who said, "I will not perform (conjugal duties) unless she wears her clothes and I mine’ must divorce her and give her also her ketubbah" (Kettubot 48a).

The sexual act was meant to bring pleasure for both husband and wife. In the event that either one or both parties experience sexual frustration due to lack of fulfilment great problems can arise if this situation is not remedied.
