Parashat 4 Portion 15 Vayira – and He appeared – Ber/Gen 18:1-33 Yesh/Is 33:17-34:12 Luke 8:40-56

Bar’chu et YHVH ha-m’vorach, Baruch YHVH ha-m’vorach l’O’lam va-ed! Baruch ata YHVH
Eloheinu melech ha-olam asher bachar banu m’kol ha-amim, v’na-tan lanu eht Torah-to.
Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”

(Bless YHVH the blessed One; Blessed is YHVH, the blessed One for all eternity. Blessed are you, YHVH, our Elohim, King of the Universe, you have selected us from among all the peoples, and have given us your Torah. Blessed are you, YHVH, giver of the Torah. Ameyn.)

Gen 18:1  And יהוה appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamrĕ, while he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day.
“Va Yerah” is a Niphal verb ie a passive verb, meaning that YHVH allowed Himself to be seen by Avraham.

Heb 1:1  Elohim, having of old spoken in many portions and many ways to the fathers by the prophets,
Heb 1:2  has in these last days spoken to us by the Son, whom He has appointed heir of all, through whom also He made the ages,a Footnote: aSee Joh_1:3
Heb 1:3  who being the brightness of the esteem and the exact representation of His substance, and sustaining all by the word of His power, having made a cleansing of our sins through Himself, sat down at the right hand Psa_110:1 of the Greatness on high,
Heb 1:4  having become so much better than the messengers, as He has inherited a more excellent Name than them.
Heb 1:13  And to which of the messengers did He ever say, “Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet”? Psa_110:1
Heb 1:14  Are they not all serving spirits sent out to attend those who are about to inherit deliverance?

Gen 18:2  So he lifted his eyes and looked, and saw three men standing opposite him. And when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground,
Gen 18:3  and said, “יהוה, if I have now found favour in Your eyes, please do not pass Your servant by.
Gen 18:4  “Please let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree.
Gen 18:5  “And let me bring a piece of bread and refresh your hearts, and then go on, for this is why you have come to your servant.” And they said, “Do as you have said.”
Gen 18:6  So Aḇraham ran into the tent to Sarah and said, “Hurry, make ready three measures of fine flour, knead it and make cakes.”
Gen 18:7  And Aḇraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, gave it to a young man, and he hurried to prepare it.
Gen 18:8  And he took curds and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them, and he stood by them under the tree as they ate. (Ex 23:19)
Gen 18:9  And they said to him, “Where is Sarah your wife?” And he said, “See, in the tent.”
ט  וַיֹּאמְרוּ אֵלָיו, אַיֵּה שָׂרָה אִשְׁתֶּךָ; וַיֹּאמֶר, הִנֵּה בָאֹהֶל.
Over the word “elaiv” are three “yuds’ over the letter “aleph”; “yud” and “vav” these three letters spell “eiyav” meaning “where is he.” Is this possibly a veiled question as to the future coming of Messiah?
Gen 18:10  And He said, “I shall certainly return to you according to the time of life, and see, Sarah your wife is to have a son!” And Sarah was listening in the tent door which was behind him.
Gen 18:11  Now Aḇraham and Sarah were old, well advanced in age, and Sarah was past the way of women.
Gen 18:12  And Sarah laughed within herself, saying, “After I have grown old, shall I have pleasure, my master being old too?” (meaning sexual pleasure)
Gen 18:13  And יהוה said to Aḇraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I truly have a child, since I am old?’
Gen 18:14  “Is any matter too hard for יהוה? At the appointed time I am going to return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah is to have a son.”
Gen 18:15  But Sarah denied it, saying, “I did not laugh,” for she was afraid. And He said, “No, but you did laugh!”
Gen 18:16  And the men rose up from there and looked toward Seḏom, and Aḇraham went with them to send them away.
Gen 18:17  And יהוה said, “Shall I hide from Aḇraham what I am doing,
Gen 18:18  since Aḇraham is certainly going to become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?
Gen 18:19  “For I have known him, so that he commands his children and his household after him, to guard the way of יהוה, to do righteousness and right-ruling, so that יהוה brings to Aḇraham what He has spoken to him.”
Gen 18:20  And יהוה said, “Because the outcry against Seḏom and Amorah is great, and because their sin is very heavy,
Gen 18:21  “I am going down now to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me, and if not, I know.”
Gen 18:22  So the men turned away from there and went toward Seḏom, but יהוה still stood before Aḇraham.
Gen 18:23  And Aḇraham drew near and said, “Would You also destroy the righteous with the wrong?
Gen 18:24  “Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city, would You also destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous that were in it?
Gen 18:25  “Far be it from You to act in this way, to slay the righteous with the wrong, so that the righteous should be as the wrong. Far be it from You! Does the Judge of all the earth not do right?”

Parashat 3 Portion 14 Ber/Gen 17:1-27 Yesh/Is 63:10-19 Rom 4:10-25

Bar’chu et YHVH ha-m’vorach, Baruch YHVH ha-m’vorach l’O’lam va-ed! Baruch ata YHVH
Eloheinu melech ha-olam asher bachar banu m’kol ha-amim, v’na-tan lanu eht Torah-to.

Ameyn.)

Gen 17:1  And it came to be when Aḇram was ninety-nine years old, that יהוה appeared to Aḇram and said to him, “I am Ěl Shaddai – walk before Me and be(become) perfect1. Footnote: 1Messiah gives the same command in Mt. 5:48.

El Shaddai is the title-name of YHVH that relates to nurturing. “Shad” in Hebrew is “breast”. YHVH is referred to as the “Breasted One.”

The name El Shaddai is used 7 times in the Tenach and this is the first time it is used. According to the law of first appearance in the scripture, this is truly significant as it relates to YHVH preserving and nurturing His covenant with us. The use of the term ‘’El Shadai’’ in Genesis occurs where the birth of children is the primary concern, especially when woman are barren – 28:3; 35:11; 43:14; 48:3 -
The Hebrew word “shad” is also a masculine noun. Caring is what the patriarchs do.
The Hitpael verb is used for “walk” – “hithalech” and means to walk back and forth – continue to walk by faith especially regarding the promise of a son. Being occupied with YHVH was the primary focus of the patriachs.

Gen 17:2  “And I give My covenant between Me and you, and shall greatly increase you.”

ב  וְאֶתְּנָה בְרִיתִי, בֵּינִי וּבֵינֶךָ; וְאַרְבֶּה אוֹתְךָ, בִּמְאֹד מְאֹד.
Note – “ve etna” means “I have given” The “hey” ending emphasizes the intensity of the verb. The evidence of possessing His covenant is great increase or fruitfulness in our lives. We may safely assume that this blessed life carries over into the “olam ha ba” – the life to come.

Gen 17:3  And Aḇram fell on his face, and Elohim spoke with him, saying,
Gen 17:4  “As for Me, look, My covenant is with you, and you shall become a father of many nations.
Gen 17:5  “And no longer is your name called Aḇram, but your name shall be Aḇraham, because I shall make you a father of many nations. (Heb – ‘’hamon’’ means multitude)
Gen 17:6  “And I shall make you bear fruit exceedingly, and make nations of you, and sovereigns shall come from you.
Gen 17:7  “And I shall establish My covenant between Me and you and your seed after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be Elohim to you and your seed after you.
Gen 17:8  “And I shall give to you and your seed after you the land of your sojournings, all the land of Kenaʽan, as an everlasting possession. And I shall be their Elohim.”
Gen 17:9  And Elohim said to Aḇraham, “As for you, guard My covenant, you and your seed after you throughout their generations.

Parashat 3 Portion 13 Ber 16:1-17:5 Yesh 54:1-10 Yesh/Is 63:19-64:1 Gal 4:21-31

Bar’chu et YHVH ha-m’vorach, Baruch YHVH ha-m’vorach l’O’lam va-ed! Baruch ata YHVH
Eloheinu melech ha-olam asher bachar banu m’kol ha-amim, v’na-tan lanu eht Torah-to.

Gen 16:1  And Sarai, Aḇram’s wife, had borne him no child. And she had a Mitsrite female servant whose name was Haḡar.

This narrative presents different midrashim. We see that there is often a prompting to go to Egypt/Mistzraim for those whom YHVH has called and chosen, who are confronted with a season of barreness. In fact some don’t just go to Mitzraim – they run – Hagar  can mean “flight,”- some who go may have no option so ‘’Hagar’’ can also mean “the stranger” “ha ger.”
Examples: Abram and his family - Gen 12:10  And a scarcity of food came to be in the land, and Aḇram went down to Mitsrayim to dwell there, for the scarcity of food was severe in the land.
Yakov and his family – Gen 46
Yitschak was told not to go to Mitzrayim/Egypt - Gen 26:1  And there was a scarcity of food in the land, besides the first scarcity of food which was in the days of Aḇraham. And Yitsḥaq went to Aḇimeleḵ, sovereign of the Philistines, in Gerar.

Gen 26:2  And יהוה appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Mitsrayim, live in the land which I command you.

YHVH did not want His people to return that way again, speaking of the kings He said: - Deu 17:16  “Only, he is not to increase horses for himself, nor cause the people to return to Mitsrayim to increase horses, for יהוה has said to you, ‘Do not return that way again.’

Yirmiyahu/Jeremiah warned the remnant not to return to Mitsrayim/Egypt -  When the remnant wanted to flee to EgyptYirmiyahu/Jeremiah prophesied against it (Jer42:15-43:3), was forced to go with the remnant to Egypt (Jer43:6, 7)

Even baby Yahshua spent some time in Egypt: Mat 2:13  And when they had left, see, a messenger of יהוה appeared to Yosěph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the Child and His mother, and flee to Mitsrayim, and remain there until I bring you word, for Herodes is about to seek the Child to destroy Him.” Mat 2:14  And rising up, he took the Child and His mother by night and departed for Mitsrayim, Mat 2:15  and remained there until the death of Herodes, to fill what was spoken by יהוה through the prophet, saying, “Out of Mitsrayim I have called My Son.” Exo_4:22-23, Hos 11:1  “When Yisra’ěl was a child, I loved him, and out of Mitsrayim I called My son.
