Parashat 36 Portion 107 B’Midbar/Numbers 11:1-35 Judges 6:1-16 Matt 6:25-30

Blessed are You, YHVH our Elohim, King of the universe, who has made us set apart through His commandments and commanded us to actively study Torah. Please YHVH, our Elohim, sweeten the words of Your Torah in our mouths and in the mouths of all Your people Yisrael. May we and our offspring, and the offspring of Your people, the House of Yisrael, may we all, together, know Your Name and study Your Torah for the sake of fulfilling Your desire. Blessed are You, YHVH, Who teaches Torah to His people Yisrael. Blessed are You, YHVH our Elohim, King of the universe, Who chose us from all the nations and gave us the Torah. Blessed are You, YHVH, Giver of the Torah.

YHVH has a good track record for providing for “desert wanderers.” The Torah provides an excellent road map for those who have accepted their destiny and fate in this life as desert wonderers in search of their promised land.

Psa 84:5  Blessed is the man whose strength is in You, Your (pilgrim) Highways are in their heart.

Heb 11:13  In belief all these died, not having received the promises, but seeing them from a distance, welcomed and embraced them, and confessed that they were aliens and strangers on the earth.

Heb 11:14  For those who speak this way make it clear that they seek a fatherland.

Modern Christianity emphasises the many blessing we receive now and that our ultimate destiny is in heaven. The scriptures teach us to first seek His Kingdom and all things we need for this life and the life to come in His kingdom shall be added to us. We strive towards His restored Kingdom, where Messiah rules, regathering all the tribes of Yisrael and teaching all the nations the Torah – this restored kingdom will rule over the nations for 1000 years when Messiah returns.

Num 11:1  And it came to be, when the people were as complainers ….

א  וַיְהִי הָעָם כְּמִתְאֹנְנִים

The root for “complain” in Hebrew/Aramaic is “anan” can be traced to an ancient Aramaic root “to be sorry.” The verb form used above is in the hitpael form (reflexive verb) and implies “to feel sorry for oneself.”

Definition of ‘’self pity ‘’- ‘’excessive, self-absorbed unhappiness over one's own troubles.’’

Yahshua promises us ‘’trouble’’ on earth – John 16:33

The root of this kind of behaviour is often the result of ungratefulness and self- centeredness.

Php 4:11  Not that I speak concerning need, for I have learned to be content in whatever state I am.

Php 4:12  I know what it is to be humbled, and I know what it is to have in excess. In any and every situation I have learned both to be filled, and to be hungry, both to have in excess, and to be in need.

Num 11:1  And it came to be, when the people were as complainers, it was evil in the ears of יהוה. And יהוה heard it, and His displeasure burned. And the fire of יהוה burned among them, and consumed those in the outskirts of the camp.( (note outskirts of the camp – Heb ‘’katsa’’ those who distanced themselves from the rest of the tribes)

‘’It is often those who are unwilling to submit to authority and walk in the true order of the Torah that will tend to always be seeking for alternative teachings (food) and never be satisfied with the nourishment that the Torah brings.’’

Let us midrash on this kind of unacceptable behaviour:

רַע בְּאָזְנֵי יְהוָה; וַיִּשְׁמַע יְהוָה, וַיִּחַר אַפּוֹ, וַתִּבְעַר-בָּם אֵשׁ יְהוָה, וַתֹּאכַל בִּקְצֵה הַמַּחֲנֶה.

First of all, we see in the ‘’passuk’’ (verse) what ‘’YHVH heard was evil in His ears”

Then we begin to see a progression of YHVH’s anger. First He becomes “hot” “charah” in Hebrew can mean “hot or furious.” “Ohf” in Hebrew means “nose or nostril” it also implies someone who is breathing hard and is angry. Get the picture someone is turning red with anger starts breathing hard and is about to “explode” - YHVH burns with fire those who have separated themselves from the camp.

“Vatochal” comes from the root “ohchal” which means to eat. Get the picture, the fire of YHVH “eats up” with fire, the complaining people.

These “eaten up people” were on the outskirts (biktsah) of the camp. In other words they were possibly distancing themselves from obeying and submitting to Moshe and YHVH’s Torah. They were displaying an “independent spirit.”

This should cause us to fear and not to judge. The coming fiery judgment of YHVH may first fall on those who are apart from His Camp or His House. 1Pet 4:17

The presence of YHVH can only dwell in a people set apart by His commandments. These set apart people will have an intense desire to follow and walk in a manner pleasing YHVH and who are seeking to guard all the commandments of YHVH.

Num 11:2  And the people cried out to Mosheh, and Mosheh prayed to יהוה, and the fire died down.

The Hebrew word root “shaka” is used and means “to drown”. Moshe’s intercessory prayer “drowned” the fire of YHVH.

Num 11:3  Then he called the name of the place Taḇʽĕrah,(Heb – ‘’burning’’) because the fire of יהוה had burned among them.

Num 11:4  And the mixed multitude who were in their midst lusted greatly, so the children of Yisra’ĕl also wept again and said, “Who is giving us meat to eat?

There was plenty of meat to be eaten. Reuben and Gad had large flocks of animals (Num 32:1). Rashi states that this was merely a pretext to complain about the manna.

The “mixed multitude” in Hebrew “aspesuf” or “gathered gathering” seen as a kind of trouble making group within a group who gathered for the wrong reasons. Note the Hebrew word “erev rav” or mixed multitude is not used in this verse. This implies that it was not the sojourners (converts) who were to be singled out for the cause of this disturbance.

This is extremely dangerous because it implies that some were gathering with those inside of Yisrael in such a way as to distinguish themselves from the rest of Yisrael. Those with independent spirits found each other. An independent spirited person believes that they know better than YHVH’s appointed leaders about what is required for YHVH’s people to reach the goal of their faith.

Num 11:5  “We remember the fish which we ate without cost in Mitsrayim, the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic,

Num 11:6  but now our throat is dried up. There is naught to look at but this manna!”

Hebrew literally reads “our souls (beings) are dried up. “Dried up” comes from an ancient Hebrew root form meaning “ashamed, confused and disappointed.

We see herein the danger of not being content in the circumstances we have been placed in. Some of the Yisraelites felt that unbelieving Egyptians had it better than them and they were going to change that by protesting until they got what they wanted.

Num 11:7  Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like the appearance of bdellium. (gum or resin)

Num 11:8  The people went about and gathered it, ground it on millstones or beat it in the mortar, and cooked it in a pot, and made cakes of it. And its taste was as the taste of cakes baked with oil.

Num 11:9  And when the dew fell on the camp at night, the manna fell on it.

Num 11:10  And Mosheh heard the people weeping throughout their clans, each man at the door of his tent. And the displeasure of יהוה burned exceedingly. And in the eyes of Mosheh it was evil,

Num 11:11  so Mosheh said to יהוה, “Why have You done evil to Your servant? And why have I not found favour in Your eyes, to put the burden of all these people on me?

Num 11:12  “Was it I who conceived all these people? Was it I who brought them forth, that You should say to me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as the foster father carries a nursing child,’ to the land which You swore to their fathers?

Num 11:13  “Where am I to get meat to give to all these people? For they weep before me, saying, ‘Give us meat to eat.’

Num 11:14  “I am unable to bear all these people alone, because the burden is too heavy for me.

Num 11:15  “And if You are doing this to me, please slay me altogether, if I have found favour in Your eyes, and let me not see my evil!”

Num 11:16  Then יהוה said to Mosheh, “Gather to Me seventy men of the elders of Yisra’ĕl, whom you know to be the elders of the people and officers over them. And bring them to the Tent of Meeting, and let them stand there with you.

Num 11:17  “And I shall come down and speak with you there, and shall take of the Spirit that is on you, and put on them. And they shall bear the burden of the people with you, so that you do not bear it yourself alone.

Num 11:18  “And say to the people, ‘Set yourselves apart for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat, because you have wept in the hearing of יהוה, saying, “Who is giving us meat to eat? For it was well with us in Mitsrayim.” And יהוה shall give you meat, and you shall eat.

Num 11:19  ‘You are going to eat, not one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days,

Num 11:20  but for a month of days, until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes an abomination to you, because you have rejected יהוה who is among you, and have wept before Him, saying, “Why did we come up out of Mitsrayim?” ’ ”

Num 11:21  And Mosheh said, “The people in whose midst I am are six hundred thousand men on foot, and You, You have said, ‘I give them meat to eat for a month of days.’

Num 11:22  “Could flocks and herds be slaughtered for them, to be sufficient for them? Or could all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, to be sufficient for them?”

Num 11:23  And יהוה said to Mosheh, “Is the arm of יהוה too short? Now see whether My word meets you or not!”

Num 11:24  And Mosheh went out and spoke to the people the words of יהוה, and he gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people and placed them around the Tent.

Num 11:25  And יהוה came down in the cloud, and spoke to him, and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and placed the same upon the seventy elders. And it came to be, when the Spirit rested upon them, that they prophesied, but did not continue. (the leaders could not sustain the anointing that was on Moshe)

Num 11:26  However, two men had remained in the camp. The name of one was Eldaḏ,(El has loved) and the name of the other Mĕyḏaḏ.(Heb – loved) And the Spirit rested upon them. Now they were among those listed, but did not go out to the Tent. And they prophesied in the camp.

Num 11:27  And a young man ran and informed Mosheh, and said, “Eldaḏ (Elohim has loved) and Mĕyḏaḏ(love) are prophesying in the camp.”

Num 11:28  And Yehoshua son of Nun, Mosheh’s assistant from his youth, answered and said, “Mosheh my master, forbid them!”

Num 11:29  Then Mosheh said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Oh, that all the people of יהוה were prophets, that יהוה would put His Spirit upon them!”

Num 11:30  And Mosheh returned to the camp, both he and the elders of Yisra’ĕl.

Num 11:31  And a wind went forth from יהוה, and it brought quail(Heb ‘’selav’’ tranquil content) from the sea and let them fall beside the camp, about a day’s journey on this side and about a day’s journey on the other side, all around the camp, and about two cubits (one metre)above the surface of the ground.

Num 11:32  And the people were up all that day, and all that night, and all the next day, and gathered the quail. He who has least gathered ten ḥomers. And they spread them out for themselves all around the camp. (‘’chomer’’ 300lit)

Num 11:33  The meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, and the wrath of יהוה burned against the people, and יהוה smote the people with an exceeding great plague.

Be careful what you pray for and set your heart on!

Num 11:34  Then he called the name of that place Qiḇroth Hatta’awah, (the graves of lust) because there they buried the people who had lusted.

Num 11:35  From Qiḇroth Hatta’awah the people set out for Ḥatsĕroth – and they were at Ḥatsĕroth.(an enclosed space, possibly a place of safety.)

How many will survive this “desert” journey in the last days?

1Co 10:5  However, with most of them Elohim was not well pleased, for they were laid low in the wilderness.

1Co 10:6  And these became examples for us, so that we should not lust after evil, as those indeed lusted.

1Co 10:11  And all these came upon them as examples, and they were written as a warning to us, on whom the ends of the ages have come,

1Co 10:12  so that he who thinks he stands, let him take heed lest he fall.

1Ti 6:6  But reverence with contentment is great gain.

1Ti 6:7  For we brought naught into the world, and it is impossible to take any out.

1Ti 6:8  When we have food and covering, we shall be satisfied with these.

The truth of the matter is that most of us are not content with just food and shelter – (Gk sustenance and protective covering)

Is the ‘’New world order’’ preparing us for such a time? Their famous slogan is ‘’own nothing and be happy’’.

1Ti 6:8  When we have food and covering, we shall be satisfied with these.

YHVH is not against us being prosperous. However, very few prosperous people truly know how to honour and serve YHVH with their prosperity. Take away their prosperity and see what they do.

Pro 30:12  There is a generation, clean in its own eyes, But not washed from its own filth.

Pro 30:13  There is a generation; Oh, how haughty are their eyes! And their eyelids are lifted up.

Pro 30:14  There is a generation whose teeth are swords, And whose jaw-teeth are knives, To devour the poor from off the earth, And the needy from among men.

Pro 30:15  The leech has two daughters: “Give! Give!” Three are not satisfied, Four that never say, “Enough”:

Pro 30:16  She’ol, and the barren womb, Soil not satisfied with water, And fire which never says, “Enough.”

Eze 34:22  therefore I shall save My flock, and let them no longer be a prey. And I shall judge between sheep and sheep.

1Co 11:19  For there have to be factions even among you, so that the approved ones might be revealed among you.

Blessed are you Yahweh, our Elohim, King of the Universe, you have given us your Torah of truth, and have planted everlasting life within our midst. Blessed are you, YHVH giver of the Torah – Amen

Addendum:

A Messianic perspective on the doctrine of sin:

Joh 16:7  “But I say the truth to you. It is better for you that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper shall not come to you at all, but if I go, I shall send Him to you.

Joh 16:8  “And having come, He shall convict a the world concerning sin,[b] and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment – Footnotes: aOr confute or prove wrong. b 2Ch_24:20, Neh_9:30, Eze_36:27, Mic_3:8, Act_28:25-27

Joh 16:9  concerning sin because they do not believe in (into) Me,

Joh 16:10  concerning righteousness because I go to My Father and you see Me no more,

Joh 16:11  concerning judgment because the ruler of this world [c] is judged. Footnote: cSee Luk_4:6

Joh 16:12  “I still have many words to say to you, but you are not able to bear them now.

If we closely look at verse 8 we see the Greek word for ‘’convict’’ ‘’elegcho’’ means to ‘’confute’’ or prove wrong. (definition of ‘’confute’’ – ‘’prove (a person or an assertion or accusation) to be wrong’’)

In other word the Ruach of YHVH was sent to the world by Yahshua to specifically reveal to them that they were WRONG when it came to how they understood what sin righteousness and judgement were.

Let us first look at sin.

1Jn 3:4  Everyone doing sin also does lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. (or Torahlessness)

We don’t really believe how serious our sin problem is. We struggle to believe what Yahshua was teaching us about sin, the extent his Father was willing to go to remove sin from us.

Mat 21:28  “But what do you think? A man had two sons, and he came to the first and said, ‘Son, go, work today in my vineyard.’

Mat 21:29  “And he answering, said, ‘I do not wish to,’ but afterwards he repented and went.

Mat 21:30  “And having come to the second, he said similarly. And he answering, said, ‘I go, master,’ but he did not go.

Mat 21:31  “Which of the two did the desire of the father?” They said to Him, “The first.” יהושע said to them, “Truly, I say to you that tax collectors and whores are entering into the reign of Elohim before you,

Mat 21:32  for Yoḥanan came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but tax collectors and whores believed him. And when you saw it, you did not repent afterwards, to believe him.

Mat 7:12  “Therefore, whatever you wish men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Torah and the Prophets.

Mat 7:13  “Enter in through the narrow gate! Because the gate is wide – and the way is broad – that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter in through it.

Mat 7:14  “Because the gate is narrow and the way is hard pressed a which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Footnote: a Or the way is afflicted

Mat 7:21  “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Master, Master,’ shall enter into the reign of the heavens, but he who is doing the desire of My Father in the heavens.

Mat 7:22  “Many shall say to Me in that day, ‘Master, Master, have we not prophesied in Your Name, and cast out demons in Your Name, and done many mighty works in Your Name?’

Mat 7:23  “And then I shall declare to them, ‘I never knew you, depart from Me, you who work lawlessness!’[c] Psa_6:8. Footnote: cSee Mat_7:15, and also Mat_13:41-42

In Yahshua’s very first sermon, his first words - Mat 5:3  “Blessed are the poor in spirit, because theirs is the reign of the heavens.

He was saying that you were blessed when realized how spiritually poor and morally bankrupt you really are ….

Jer 17:9  “The heart is crooked a above all, and desperately sick – who shall know it? Footnote: a Jer_7:24, Jer_16:12, Jer_18:12, Jer_23:17Hebrew word for ‘’crooked’’ is ‘’akov’’ deceitful, sly, insidious’’  where the name ‘’Yakov’’ comes from.

Rom 5:19  For as through the disobedience of one man many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the One many shall be made righteous.

Rom 5:20  And the Torah came in beside, so that the trespass would increase. But where sin increased, favour increased still more,

Rom 5:21  so that as sin did reign in death, even so favour might reign through righteousness to everlasting life through יהושע Messiah our Master.

Romans chapter 6 and 7 give us further helpful insight into the challenges and victories we have over sin.

Secondly lets us look at righteousness.

Isa 64:6  And all of us have become as one unclean, and all our righteousnesses are as soiled rags. And all of us fade like a leaf, and our crookednesses, like the wind, have taken us away. (Hebrew – soiled rags – soiled menstrual cloth)

2Co 5:21  For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of Elohim.

Rom 10:1  Truly brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to Elohim for Yisra’ěl is for deliverance.

Rom 10:2  For I bear them witness that they have an ardour for Elohim, but not according to knowledge.

Rom 10:3  For not knowing the righteousness of Elohim, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, they did not subject themselves toa the righteousness of Elohim. Footnote: aOr did not obey

Rom 10:4  For Messiah is the goal b of the ‘Torah unto righteousness’ to everyone who believes. Footnote: b Or end purpose; not termination.

Php 2:5  For, let this mind be in you which was also in Messiah יהושע

Php 2:6  who, being in the form of Elohim, did not regard equality with Elohim a matter to be grasped,

Php 2:7  but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, and came to be in the likeness of men.

Php 2:8  And having been found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, death even of a stake.

Php 2:9  Elohim, therefore, has highly exalted Him and given Him the Name which is above every name,

Finally let us look at the issue of judgment.

Joh 16:11  concerning judgment because the ruler of this world  is judged.

Luk 4:6  And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I shall give You, and their esteem, for it has been delivered to me,b and I give it to whomever I wish. Footnote: bSee 2Co_4:4, Joh_12:31, Joh_14:30, Joh_16:11, 1Jn_5:19

It seems clear that satan is the ruler of this age – he has been judged and awaits his final judgment – meanwhile he is very active on planet earth. His final annihilation awaits an appointed time.

It also appears that our continual sin and unrighteousness give the devil a legal right to ‘’operate’’ on earth.

So in the last days it shall be like Pharoah in Egypt refusing to let YHVH’s people go – he had a legal right to them. YHVH had to kill Pharoah before the Yisraelites could leave.

We also learn that the Yisraelites did not first return to the ‘’Promised land’’ but they were led into the wilderness to be tested.

Deu 8:2  “And you shall remember that יהוה your Elohim led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you, prove you, to know what is in your heart, whether you guard His commands or not.

Deu 8:3  “And He humbled you, and let you suffer hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, to make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but by every Word that comes from the mouth of יהוה.a Footnote: aSee also Mat_4:4 and in Luk_4:4

Deu 8:4  “Your garments did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years.

Deu 8:5  “Thus you shall know in your heart that as a man disciplines his son, so יהוה your Elohim disciplines you,

Deu 8:6  therefore you shall guard the commands of יהוה your Elohim, to walk in His ways and to fear Him.

In the last of the last days we too who are still alive will be led into the wilderness for 42 months. We will be stripped of everything and will be totally dependent on YHVH. (The Yisraelites had 42 stops in the wilderness)

Rev 12:6  And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by Elohim, to be nourished there one thousand two hundred and sixty days.

Rev 12:14  And the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, to fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time and times and half a time, Dan_7:25, Dan_12:7 from the presence of the serpent.

Rev 12:15  And out of his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river after the woman, to cause her to be swept away by the river.

Rev 12:16  And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed up the river which the dragon had spewed out of his mouth.

Rev 12:17  And the dragon was enraged with the woman, and he went to fight with the remnant of her seed, those guarding the commands of Elohim and possessing the witness of יהושע Messiah.

We are currently living in times where we are being prepared for the coming tribulation.

Let us not grumble but prepare ourselves for the conclusion of this age – to be in the presence of our Master for ever and ever.

Amo 5:18  Woe to you who are longing for the day of יהוה! What does the day of יהוה mean to you? It is darkness, and not light,

Amo 5:19  as when a man flees from a lion, and a bear shall meet him; or entered his house, rested his hand on the wall, and a serpent shall bite him.

Amo 5:20  Is not the day of יהוה darkness, and not light? Is it not very dark, with no brightness in it?

The Coming of the Son of Man

Luk 21:25  “And there shall be signs in the sun, and moon, and stars, and on the earth anxiety of nations, in bewilderment at the roaring of the sea, and agitation,

Luk 21:26  men fainting from fear and the expectation of what is coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens shall be shaken. Hag_2:6, Hag_2:21

Luk 21:27  “And then they shall see the Son of Aḏam coming in a cloud Dan_7:13 with power and much esteem.

Luk 21:28  “And when these matters begin to take place, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near.”

Rev 3:7  “And to the messenger of the assembly in Philadelphia write, ‘He who is set-apart, He who is true, He who has the key of Dawiḏ, He who opens and no one shuts, and shuts and no one opens, Isa_22:22 says this:

Rev 3:8  “I know your works – see, I have set before you an open door, and no one is able to shut it – that you have little power, yet have guarded My Word, and have not denied My Name.

Rev 3:9  “See, I am giving up those of the congregation of Satan, who say they are Yehuḏim and are not, but lie. See, I am making them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you.

Rev 3:10  “Because you have guarded My Word of endurance, I also shall guard you from the hour of trial which shall come upon all the world, to try those who dwell on the earth.

Rev 3:11  “See, I am coming speedily! Hold what you have that no one take your crown.

Rev 3:12  “He who overcomes, I shall make him a supporting post in the Dwelling Place of My Elohim, and he shall by no means go out. And I shall write on him the Name of My Elohim and the name of the city of My Elohim, the renewed Yerushalayim, which comes down out of the heaven from My Elohim, and My renewed Name.

Rev 3:13  “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the assemblies.”
