Parashat 33 Portion 108 ‘’B’Chukatai’’ Lev 27:1-34 Is 40:1-26 Rom 12:1-2

Blessed are You, YHVH our Elohim, You have set us apart by Your commandments and have commanded us to actively study Your Torah. Please YHVH, our Elohim, sweeten the words of Your Torah in our mouths and in the mouths of all Your people Israel. May You open our eyes to see marvellous truths from Your Torah. Thank You for calling us who were once gentiles excluded from the citizenship of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise having no expectation and without Elohim- but now through the blood of Messiah we have gained access into the covenants and have obtained citizenship into the commonwealth of Israel.  Blessed are You, YHVH, Who teaches Torah to His people Israel. Blessed are You, YHVH, Giver of the Torah.

This Torah portion speaks of a specific kind of vow called an “Yafli neder” or an extraordinary and amazing vow.  This vow involved giving an ‘’erech’’ or valuation to the inherent and unique “set apartness” of an object or person. So, the book of Vayikra ends as it opened, with a chapter of regulations regarding offerings, however in this final chapter the offerings we present are more extraordinary and more special than the usual offerings – these offerings include ourselves and those around us and even our possessions. The apostle Paul gives us a special insight into these offerings and in so doing he once again elevates the Torah.

A Living Sacrifice - “Yafli neder”

Rom 12:1  I call upon you, therefore, brothers, through the compassion of Elohim, to present your bodies a living offering – set-apart, well-pleasing to Elohim – your reasonable worship.

Rom 12:2  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you prove what is that good and well-pleasing and perfect desire of Elohim.

אישׁ כי יפלא – when a man does a ( פלא)  an extraordinary or hard or difficult thing

Lev 27:1  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,

Lev 27:2  “Speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl, and say to them, ‘When a man separates (‘’פלא’’ )a vow, by your evaluation(‘’erech’’) of lives unto יהוה, (Gen 18:14 היפלא )

‘’speak to the children of Israel and say to them – when a man makes the extraordinary  promise in offering and dedicating himself and others and his possessions to YHVH’’

This person wasn’t satisfied in just bringing an animal or monetary offering, he was willing to empty himself of his life and his possessions to honour YHVH and serve his fellow man. This ‘’ish’’  (man) was also willing to lay down his life and pay for the mistakes of his fellow brothers and sisters and save them and their property from the possible harsh treatment of slave owners.

Where are these men today? Do they even exist?

The book of ‘’Vayikra’’ begins with the various animal offerings and ends when the ‘’unique ish’’ the man himself, is willing to be the offering unto YHVH. In this Torah portion YHVH gives instructions to this kind of ‘’unique ish’’ this ‘’rare man.’’

Will this happen again in the last days? - Psa 110:3  Your people volunteer (become free will offerings - נדבה) in the day of Your might (potent power)

Verse 4 of Psalm 110 gives us the identity of a ‘’unique ish’’

Psa 110:4  יהוה has sworn and does not relent, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Malkitseeq.”

Lev 27:3  when your evaluation is of a male from twenty years old up to sixty years old, then your evaluation shall be fifty sheqels of silver, according to the sheqel of the set-apart place.

Lev 27:4  ‘And if it is a female, then your evaluation shall be thirty sheqels;

According to the Books of Samuel, David paid 50 silver shekels for the threshing floor and the oxen (2 Samuel 24:24); Chronicles states that David paid 600 gold shekels for the entire site where the threshing floor was located (1 Chronicles 21:25).

50 shekels was the price of the altar on the Temple mount site.

A silver shekel would be worth about $10 – One gold shekel would be worth 10 times more.

Therefore 50 shekels would be worth around $500 or around R10 000 – (for the Temple treasury) The entire Temple mount complex was purchased for R1,2 million.

This Torah portion gives instructions to this unique man on how he can carry out his intentions of giving himself and all that he has to YHVH.

Lev 27:5  and if from five years old up to twenty years old, then your evaluation for a male shall be twenty sheqels, and for a female ten sheqels;

Lev 27:6  and if from a month old up to five years old, then your evaluation for a male shall be five sheqels of silver, and for a female your evaluation shall be three sheqels of silver;

Lev 27:7  and if from sixty years old and above, if it is a male, then your evaluation shall be fifteen sheqels, and for a female ten sheqels.

Lev 27:8  ‘But if he is too poor to pay your evaluation, then he shall present himself before the priest, and the priest shall set a value for him. According to the ability of him who vowed, the priest shall value him.

Yahshua teaches us similar instructions found in this Torah portion:

Mar 10:29  יהושע said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for the sake of Me and the Good News,

Mar 10:30  who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come, everlasting life.

This ‘’unique man’’ would be greatly rewarded in this life and in the life to come – however YHVH goes on to give a series of instructions to ensure that such a ‘’unique man’’ would not have any ulterior motives and change his mind and break his vow –

Luk 9:62  But יהושע said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the reign of Elohim.”[c] Footnote: c Luk_14:26, Luk_14:33, Joh_12:24-26

Luk 14:33  “So, then, every one of you who does not give up all that he has, is unable to be My taught one.[b] Footnote: bSee Luk_9:62, Joh_12:24-26, Php_3:7, Heb_11:26.

We need to understand that the purpose of the entire sacrificial system of Leviticus was to bring us to a place of complete surrender to Him – with no ulterior motives – if this does not happen we have not fully comprehended the purpose for the sacrificial system.

Lev 27:9  ‘And if it is a beast of which they bring an offering to יהוה, all such given to יהוה is set-apart. (these were not included in the normal offerings - “Yafli neder”)

Lev 27:10  ‘He is not to replace it or exchange it, good for spoilt or spoilt for good. And if he at all exchanges beast for beast, then both it and the one exchanged for it is set-apart.

Lev 27:11  ‘And if it is any unclean beast of which they do not bring an offering to יהוה, then he shall present the beast before the priest; (donkeys, camels and horses)

Lev 27:12  and the priest shall value it, whether it is good or spoilt. According to your evaluation, O priest, so it shall be.

Lev 27:13  ‘But if he indeed redeems it, then he shall add one-fifth to your evaluation. (fine)

Lev 27:14  ‘And when a man sets his house apart, to be set-apart to יהוה, then the priest shall value it, whether it is good or spoilt. As the priest values it, so it stands.

Lev 27:15  ‘And if he who sets it apart does redeem his house, then he shall add one-fifth of the silver of your evaluation to it, and it shall be his. (perhaps this was intended for widows and orphans)

Lev 27:16  ‘And if a man sets apart to יהוה a field he owns, then your evaluation shall be according to the seed for it – a cḥomer (300l) of barley seed at fifty sheqels of silver.

Lev 27:17  ‘If he sets his field apart from the Year of Jubilee, according to your evaluation it stands.

Lev 27:18  ‘But if he sets his field apart after the Jubilee, then the priest shall reckon to him the silver due according to the years that remain till the Year of Jubilee, and it shall be deducted from your evaluation.

Lev 27:19  ‘And if he who sets the field apart ever wishes to redeem it, then he shall add one-fifth of the silver of your evaluation to it, and it shall be his.

Lev 27:20  ‘And if he does not redeem the field, or if he has sold the field to another man, it is no longer redeemed,

Lev 27:21  but the field, when it is released in the Jubilee, is set-apart to יהוה as a dedicated field, to be the possession of the priest.

Lev 27:22  ‘And if a man sets apart to יהוה a field which he has bought, which is not the field of his possession,

Lev 27:23  then the priest shall reckon to him the amount of your evaluation, up to the Year of Jubilee, and he shall give your evaluation on that day, set-apart to יהוה.

Lev 27:24  ‘In the Year of Jubilee the field returns to him from whom he bought it, to him whose is the possession of the land.

Lev 27:25  ‘And all your evaluations is to be according to the sheqel of the set-apart place: twenty gĕrahs to the sheqel. (gerah, a weight, a 20th part of a shekel, equal to the weight of 16 barley grains or 4 to 5 carob beans)

Lev 27:26  ‘However, a first-born of the beasts, which is first-born to יהוה, no man sets it apart – whether bull or sheep, it belongs to יהוה.

Lev 27:27  ‘And if among the unclean beasts, then he shall ransom it according to your evaluation, and shall add one-fifth to it. And if it is not redeemed, then it shall be sold according to your evaluation.

Lev 27:28  ‘However, whatever a man lays under ban for יהוה of all that he has, man and beast, or the field of his possession, is not sold or redeemed. Whatever is laid under ban is most set-apart to יהוה. (kodesh kodeshim which means you cannot use it for your own benefit)

Lev 27:29  ‘No one under the ban, under the ban among men, is ransomed, but shall certainly be put to death.

Lev 27:30  ‘And all the tithe of the land – of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree – belongs to יהוה. It is set-apart to יהוה.

Lev 27:31  ‘If a man indeed redeems any of his tithes, he adds one-fifth to it.

Lev 27:32  ‘And the entire tithe of the herd and of the flock, all that passes under the rod, the tenth one is set-apart to יהוה.

Lev 27:33  ‘He does not inquire whether it is good or spoilt, nor does he exchange it. And if he exchanges it at all, then both it and the one exchanged for it are set-apart, it is not redeemed.’ ”

Lev 27:34  These are the commands which יהוה commanded Mosheh for the children of Yisra’ĕl on Mount Sinai.

Some of these instructions may be difficult to understand and implement, however we can take comfort in the fact that these instructions will be explained and performed by the Levitical priesthood when Yahshua returns and the Temple service is restored.

This is the calling of the ‘’unique ish’’

1Co 6:19  Or do you not know that your body is the Dwelling Place of the Set-apart Spirit who is in you, which you have from Elohim, and you are not your own?

1Co 6:20  For you were bought with a price, therefore esteem Elohim in your body and in your spirit,[b] which are of Elohim. Footnote: bSee 1Co_7:23, 1Pe_1:18-19

- 2Co 4:11  For we, the living, are always delivered to death for the sake of יהושע, that the life of יהושע might also be manifested in our mortal flesh,

2Co 4:12  so that death indeed is working in us, but the life in you.

2Co 2:16  To the one we are the smell of death to death, and to the other the fragrance of life to life. And who is competent for these?

2Co 3:5  Not that we are competent in ourselves to reckon any matter as from ourselves, but our competence is from Elohim,

2Co 3:6  who also made us competent as servants of a renewed covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit, for the letter kills but the Spirit gives life. (This was the spirit of the sacrificial service).

Mat 22:14  “For many are called, but few are chosen.”[a] Footnote: aSee Mat_20:16

In the last 7 years of this age we will begin to see the restoration of these things, even now the Spirit is awakening in us the understanding and desire to walk as this ‘’unique ish’’. Maybe the road of this ‘’unique ish’’ is more narrow than we could ever have imagined.

Blessed are you YHVH, our Elohim, King of the Universe, you have given us your Torah of truth, and have planted everlasting life within our midst. Blessed are you, YHVH giver of the Torah – Amein

Parashat 33 Portion 107 ‘’Be Chukatai’’ – Vayikra 26:3-46 Is 1:19-20, 24-27 +2:2-5Yer 16:19-21 Luke 9:57-62

Blessed are You, YHVH, Giver of the Torah.

This portion is also known as the “Tochacha” or solemn warning. “Tochacha” comes from the word “Hochacha” which can mean “rebuke” The inhabitants of this world are beginning to witness that all their efforts to create a better world are failing. Instead of repentance and turning to YHVH, mankind is doubling down and trying harder and harder to make things better. Instead of getting better things are getting worse. The most severe ‘’rebuke’’ imaginable is about to come upon all mankind because of their defiance of YHVH and His Messiah.

Jer 17:5  Thus said יהוה, “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his arm, and whose heart turns away from יהוה

Jer 17:6  “For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, and not see when good comes, and shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, a salt land that is not inhabited.

Jer 17:7  “Blessed is the man who trusts in יהוה, and whose trust is יהוה

Jer 17:8  “For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and does not see when heat comes. And his leaf shall be green, and in the year of drought he is not anxious, nor does he cease from yielding fruit.

Our haftarah portion reminds us of the falsehood and futility we have inherited from our fathers.

Jer 16:19  O יהוה, my strength and my stronghold and my refuge, in the day of distress the gentiles(nations) shall come to You from the ends of the earth and say, “Our fathers have inherited only falsehood, futility, and there is no value (benefit) in them.”1 Footnote: 1See Ps. 147:19, Isa. 2:3, Isa. 60:2-3, John 4:22, Rom. 2:20, Rom. 3:2, Rom. 9:4. Zech 8:23

אם בחקתי – we must learn to discern the difference between the ways of man and the ways of YHVH – mans ways are more than often opposed to YHVH’s ways.

Lev 26:3  ‘If you walk in My laws and guard My commands, and shall do them,

ג  אִם-בְּחֻקֹּתַי, תֵּלֵכוּ; וְאֶת-מִצְוֺתַי תִּשְׁמְרוּ, וַעֲשִׂיתֶם אֹתָם.

Vs 3 in the Hebrew reads: “if in my statutes (bechukatai) you will walk and my commandments (mitzvoth) you will guard (shamar) and will do them (asah)

When the Spirit YHVH has ‘’engraved’’ His sayings (chokim) on our hearts, His eternal purposes become established in our hearts and clearer to us – Jer 31:33

If (אִם-) the Torah had been internalized in our hearts then we have Lev 26:4-13

Lev 26:4  then I shall give you rain in its season, and the land shall yield its crops, and the trees of the field yield their fruit.

Because of mankind’s rejection of the Torah, in the last three and a half years of the end time tribulation there will be no rain on earth - Rev 11:6 These (two witnesses) possess authority to shut the heaven, so that no rain falls in the days of their prophecy.

Lev 26:5  ‘And your threshing shall last till the time of the grape harvest, and the grape harvest shall last till the time of sowing. And you shall eat your bread until you have enough and shall dwell in your land safely.

Lev 26:6  ‘And I shall give peace in the land, and you shall lie down and no one make you afraid. And I shall clear the land of evil beasts,(‘’chayah rahah’’ – evil spirits) and not let the sword go through your land.

Lev 26:7  ‘And you shall pursue your enemies, and they shall fall by the sword before you.

Lev 26:8  ‘And five of you shall pursue a hundred, and a hundred of you pursue ten thousand. And your enemies shall fall by the sword before you.

Lev 26:9  ‘And I shall turn to you and make you bear fruit, and shall increase you, and shall establish My covenant with you.

Lev 26:10  ‘And you shall eat the old supply, and clear out the old because of the new.

Lev 26:11  ‘And I shall set My Dwelling Place in your midst, and My being shall not reject you.

Lev 26:12  ‘And I shall walk in your midst, and shall be your Elohim, and you shall be My people.

Lev 26:13  ‘I am יהוה your Elohim, who brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim, from being their slaves. And I have broken the bars of your yoke and made you walk upright.

Most of mankind do not see the need to obey YHVH’s commandments and many believe they are immune to the consequences of their disobedience.

Lev 26:14  ‘But if you do not obey Me, and do not do all these commands,

Lev 26:15  and if you reject My laws,(be chukatai) or if your being loathes My right-rulings, so that you do not do all My commands, but break My covenant, (note YHVH is addressing His people and history is the “tochacha” or the proof)

Lev 26:16  I also do this to you: And I shall appoint sudden alarm (anxiety) over you, wasting disease (of the lungs) and inflammation,(auto immune diseases destroying the eyes, and consuming the life.(our ‘’nefesh’’ or being will pine away – overwhelmed with grief and stress) And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. (all your life’s work will be in vain – your old age pension will become worthless)

Lev 26:17  ‘And I shall set My face against you, and you shall be smitten before your enemies. And those who hate you shall rule over you, and you shall flee when no one pursues you.

Lev 26:18  ‘And after all this, if you do not obey Me, then I shall punish you seven times more for your sins.

Lev 26:19  ‘And I shall break the pride of your power, and shall make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze.

Lev 26:20  ‘And your strength shall be spent in vain and your land not yield its crops, nor the trees of the land yield their fruit.

Lev 26:21  ‘And if you walk contrary to Me, and refuse to obey Me, I shall bring on you seven times more plagues, according to your sins,

Lev 26:22  and send wild beasts among you, which shall bereave you of your children. And I shall cut off your livestock, and make you few in number, and your highways shall be deserted.

Lev 26:23  ‘And if you are not instructed by Me by these, but walk contrary to Me,

Lev 26:24  then I also shall walk contrary to you, and I Myself shall smite you seven times for your sins.

Lev 26:25  ‘And I shall bring against you a sword executing the vengeance of My covenant, and you shall gather together in your cities, and I shall send pestilence among you, and you shall be given into the hand of the enemy.

Lev 26:26  ‘When I have cut off your supply of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall bring back to you your bread by weight, and you shall eat and not be satisfied.

Lev 26:27  ‘And if in spite of this, you do not obey Me, but walk contrary to Me,

Lev 26:28  then I shall walk contrary to you in wrath. And I Myself shall punish you seven times for your sins.

Lev 26:29  ‘And you shall eat the flesh of your sons, and eat the flesh of your daughters.

Lev 26:30  ‘And I shall destroy your high places, (church towers) and cut down your sun-pillars, and put your carcasses on the carcasses of your idols. And My being shall loathe you.

Lev 26:31  ‘And I shall turn your cities into ruins and lay your set-apart places waste, and not smell your sweet fragrances.

Lev 26:32  ‘And I shall lay the land waste, and your enemies who dwell in it shall be astonished at it.

Lev 26:33  ‘And I shall scatter you among the gentiles and draw out a sword after you. And your land shall be desert and your cities ruins,

Lev 26:34  and the land enjoy its Sabbaths as long as it lies waste and you are in your enemies’ land. Then the land would rest and enjoy its Sabbaths.

Lev 26:35  ‘As long as it lies waste it rests, for the time it did not rest on your Sabbaths when you dwelt in it.

Lev 26:36  ‘And as for those of you who are left, I shall send faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies, and the sound of a shaken leaf shall cause them to flee. And they shall flee as though retreating from a sword, and they shall fall when no one pursues.

Lev 26:37  ‘And they shall stumble over one another, as from before a sword, when no one pursues. And you shall be unable to stand before your enemies.

Lev 26:38  ‘And you shall perish among the gentiles,(nations) and the land of your enemies shall eat you up,

Lev 26:39  and those of you who are left rot away in their crookedness in your enemies’ lands, and also in their fathers’ crookednesses rot away with them.

Deu 4:30  “In your distress, when all these words shall come upon you in the latter days, then you shall return to יהוה your Elohim and shall obey His voice.

Deu 4:31  “For יהוה your Elohim is a compassionate Ěl, He does not forsake you, nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore to them.

Jer 23:19  See, a storm of יהוה shall go forth in a rage, a whirling storm! It whirls on the head of the wrong.

Jer 23:20  The displeasure of יהוה shall not turn back until He has done and established the purposes of His heart. In the latter days you shall understand it perfectly.1 Footnote: 1See 30:24.

Jer 25:31  “Tumult shall come to the ends of the earth, for יהוה has a controversy with the nations. He shall enter into judgment with all flesh. The wrong He shall give to the sword,’ declares יהוה.”

Jer 25:32  Thus said יהוה of hosts, “See, evil is going forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind is raised up from the farthest parts of the earth.

Jer 25:33  “And in that day the slain of יהוה shall be from one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth.[a] They shall not be lamented, or gathered, or buried, for they are dung on the face of the ground. Footnote: aSee footnote Isa_66:24.

1Pe 4:17  Because it is time for judgment to begin from the House of Elohim. And if firstly from us, what is the end of those who do not obey the Good News of Elohim?

1Pe 4:18  And if the righteous one is scarcely saved, where shall the wicked and the sinner appear? Pro_11:31

2Pe 3:11  Seeing all these are to be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be in set-apart behaviour and reverence,

2Pe 3:12  looking for and hastening the coming of the day of Elohim, through which the heavens shall be destroyed, being set on fire, and the elements melt with intense heat!

We have very little sense of our own personal liability for the mess we and the world are in. I think this is more tragic than the mess itself. This is going to result in our severe chastisement.

We have grieved the Ruach for so long – How can we find our way back. How do we find ‘’teshuvah’’

What is the answer?

Lev 26:40  But if  (Yet) they confess their crookedness and the crookedness of their fathers, with their trespass in which they trespassed against Me, and that they also have walked contrary to Me,

Lev 26:41  and that I also have walked contrary to them and have brought them into the land of their enemies – if their uncircumcised heart is then humbled, and they accept the punishment of their crookedness,

Lev 26:42  then I shall remember My covenant with Yaʽaqoḇ, and also My covenant with Yitsḥaq, and also remember My covenant with Aḇraham, and remember the land.

Lev 26:43  ‘For the land was abandoned by them, and enjoying its Sabbaths while lying waste without them, and they were paying for their crookedness, because they rejected My right-rulings and because their being loathed My laws.

Lev 26:44  ‘And yet for all this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I shall not reject them, nor shall I loathe them so as to destroy them and break My covenant with them. For I am יהוה their Elohim.

Lev 26:45  ‘Then I shall remember for their sake the covenant of the ancestors whom I brought out of the land of Mitsrayim before the eyes of the nations to be their Elohim. I am יהוה.’ ”

Lev 26:46  These are the laws and the right-rulings and the Torot1 which יהוה made between Himself and the children of Yisra’ĕl on Mount Sinai by the hand of Mosheh. Footnote: 1Torot - plural of Torah, teaching.

We have no excuse for our dilemma, Yahshua came 2000 years ago and showed us a way out of our wretched condition because we all like sheep have gone astray everyone one of us has turned to his own way – Isa 53:6 And יהוה has laid on Him the crookedness of us all.

What must happen to save us has already happened and is continuing to happen -  Mat 3:10  “And the axe is already laid to the root of the trees. Every tree, then, which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

In other words the ‘’axe’’ has severed all of mankind’s efforts to save himself and establish YHVH’s Kingdom on earth – righteousness peace and joy in the Set Apart Spirit  – Rom 14:17 The three most scarcest commodities on earth.

Mat 16:18  “…… I shall build My assembly, and the gates of She’olb shall not overcome it.

Mal 4:4  “Remember the Torah of Mosheh, My servant, which I commanded him in Ḥorěḇ for all Yisra’ěl – laws and right-rulings.

Mal 4:5  “See, I am sending you Ěliyah the prophet before the coming of the great and awesome day of יהוה

Mal 4:6  “And he shall turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the earth with utter destruction.”a Footnote: aSee also Zec_14:13

One of Eliyahu’s/Elijaha’s primary roles was to expose Jezebel and destroy the prophets of Baal. This must first happen before there can be a restoration of the Hebrew Israelite family.

Rev 2:20  “But I hold against you that you allow that woman (Gk – ‘’your wife’’) Izeḇel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and lead My servants astray to commit whoring and to eat food offered to idols.

Rev 2:21  “And I gave her time to repent of her whoring, and she did not repent.

Rev 2:22  “See, I am throwing her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great affliction, unless they repent of their works.

Rev 2:23  “And I shall slay her children with death. And all the assemblies shall know that I am the One searching the kidneys and hearts. And I shall give to each one of you according to your works.

It is commonly believed that the two end time witnesses will be Moshe and Eliyahu – who will prophecy for the final 1260 days of the great tribulation - Rev 11:3  “And I shall give unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clad in sackcloth.”

Righteous Hebrew Israelite women will play a key role in this restoration – they will have the exact opposite spirit to that of Jezebel – they will be like the ‘’glue’’ that binds the Israelite family together - Jer 31:22  “Till when would you turn here and there, O backsliding daughter? For יהוה has created what is new on earth: a woman encompasses a man!”

Blessed are you YHVH, our Elohim, King of the Universe, you have given us your Torah of truth, and have planted everlasting life within our midst. Blessed are you, YHVH giver of the Torah – Amein.

2 Esdras 14: 21 Your Law(Torah) has been destroyed by fire,(the single greatest tragedy to come upon mankind is the ignorance and destruction of the Torah) so no one can know what you have done in the past or what you are planning to do in the future. 22 Please send your Set Apart Spirit to me, so that I can write down everything that has been done in this world from the beginning, everything that was written in your Law (Torah). Then in these last days, people will be able to find the right way and obtain life if they want to."

The Torah of Israel is markedly civil and humane in terms of the treatment of slaves. In the Torah, slaves were given many rights, and slave owners were obliged to maintain these rights as an act of obedience to YHVH. Slaves were to be given rest on Sabbath days, given equal opportunity to engage in the worship of YHVH, and had legal recourse if mis-treated. Indeed, if a slave sustained a severe injury by his master, he was given his freedom (Ex 21:26–27). Slaves who were not indentured for life could be redeemed and could even redeem themselves if their means were sufficient.

In our parashah,(‘’Be Har’’) the clear contrast is made between one’s “countryman” (ָיךִחָא‘ ,achicha, literally “your brother”) and people from foreign countries (םִגּוֹיַה תֵאֵמ ,mei’eit hagoyim, “from the nations”). The Israelite is never to be a purchased slave, meaning that while he will do the work of a common purchased slave, his position as a slave or servant ends at the Sh’mittah (sabbatical year, cf. Ex 21:2), including the Yovel (Jubilee). In other words, he is never to be considered the property of another Israelite—his position as a slave is only temporary, like that of a hired worker. The text explains why: “For they are My servants whom I brought out from the land of Egypt; they are not to be sold in a slave sale” (v. 42). The Israelites belong to YHVH because He purchased them via the redemption from Egypt. They cannot, therefore, become the property of someone else. This is not the case with a slave or servant purchased from the pagan nations, or from the foreigners who may live within the community of Israel. Such a slave or servant may become the perpetual property of the one who purchases them, meaning that their families will continue to be the purchased slaves or servants from generation to generation. “You may even bequeath them to your sons after you, to receive as a possession; you can use them as permanent slaves” (v. 46). Thus, in the Jubilee, only Israelites are released, not slaves from pagan nations.

There was a saying in ancient Israel amongst the righteous landowners that ‘’when you purchased a slave, you purchased a master’’ All landowners needed extra hands to farm their lands.

וכי ימוך אחיך

Lev 25:35  ‘And when your brother becomes poor, וכי ימוך אחיך  and his hand has failed with you, then you shall sustain him, and he shall live with you, like a stranger or a sojourner.

Lev 25:36  ‘Take no interest from him, or profit, but you shall fear your Elohim, and your brother shall live with you.

Lev 25:37  ‘Do not lend him your silver on interest, and do not lend him your food for profit.

Lev 25:38  ‘I am יהוה your Elohim, who brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim, to give you the land of Kenaʽan, to be your Elohim.

Lev 25:39  ‘And when your brother who dwells by you becomes poor, and sells himself to you, do not make him serve as a slave.

Why would a brother become poor?

He needed to learn that obedience to the covenant(Torah) brings blessing – see whole chapter of Deut 28  (note disobedience causes dispersion and slavery vs64-68) If he becomes poor through decisions he made, he should undergo rehabilitation and come under submission to one who by YHVH’s favour is living under the blessings of the covenant – The Torah- until he can be prosperous and self - supporting again. There should be no humiliation or any form of exploitation during this rehabilitation process.

Maybe poverty comes as a test to humble and to see what is in our hearts - Deu 8:1  “Guard to do every command which I command you today, that you might live, and shall increase, and go in, and shall possess the land of which יהוה swore to your fathers.

Deu 8:2  “And you shall remember that יהוה your Elohim led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you, prove you, to know what is in your heart, whether you guard His commands or not.

Deu 8:3  “And He humbled you, and let you suffer hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, to make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but by every Word that comes from the mouth of יהוה.[a] Footnote: aSee also Mat_4:4 and in Luk_4:4

Lev 25:40  ‘But as a hired servant,(Heb – sakir – hired servant) as a settler he is with you, and serves you until the Year of Jubilee.

Lev 25:41  ‘And then he shall leave you, he and his children with him, and shall return to his own clan, even return to the possession of his fathers.

Lev 25:42  ‘For they are My servants,(Heb – eved ivri– servant or slave) whom I brought out of the land of Mitsrayim, they are not sold as slaves. Note significance of the context in which these two Torah portions were given: – Parashat Yitro Ex 20 – The giving of the Torah- followed by Parashat Mishpatim Ex 21 – the bondservant – The Torah is best received by bondservants – those whose ears had been carved open.

Isa 50:5  The Master יהוה has opened My ear,(sign of a bondservant) and I was not rebellious, nor did I turn away.

Isa 50:6  I gave My back to those who struck Me, and My cheeks to those who plucked out the beard, I did not hide My face from humiliation and spitting.

Isa 50:7  And the Master יהוה helps Me, therefore I shall not be humiliated. So I have set My face like a flint, and I know that I am not put to shame.

Lev 25:43  ‘Do not rule over him with harshness, but you shall fear your Elohim.

Lev 25:44  ‘And your male and female slaves whom you have from the nations that are around you, from them you buy male and female slaves, (if they came into the covenant they were to be treated as Israelites)

Lev 25:45  and also from the sons of the strangers sojourning among you, from them you buy, and from their clans who are with you, which they shall bring forth in your land, and they shall be your property.

Lev 25:46  ‘And you shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them as a possession, they are your slaves for all time. But over your brothers, the children of Yisra’ĕl, you do not rule with harshness, one over another. (not everyone wanted to become an Israelite and bear the yoke of the Torah- Mt 11:28-30)

Lev 25:47  ‘Now when a sojourner or a settler with you becomes rich, and your brother with him becomes poor, and sells himself to the settler or sojourner with you, or to a member of the sojourner’s clan,

Lev 25:48  after he has been sold, there is a right of redemption to him – one of his brothers does redeem him,

Lev 25:49  or his uncle or his uncle’s son does redeem him, or anyone who is a close relative to him in his clan does redeem him, or if he is able, then he shall redeem himself.

Lev 25:50  ‘And he shall reckon with him who bought him: The price of his release shall be according to the number of years, from the year that he was sold to him until the Year of Jubilee; as the days of a hired servant it is with him.

Lev 25:51  ‘If there are yet many years, according to them he repays the price of his redemption, from the silver of his purchase.

Lev 25:52  ‘And if few years are left until the Year of Jubilee, then he shall reckon with him, and according to his years he repays him the price of his redemption.

Lev 25:53  ‘He is with him as a yearly hired servant, and he does not rule with harshness over him before your eyes.

Lev 25:54  ‘And if he is not redeemed in these years, then he shall be released in the Year of Jubilee, he and his children with him.

Lev 25:55  ‘Because the children of Yisra’ĕl are servants to Me, they are My servants whom I brought out of the land of Mitsrayim. I am יהוה your Elohim.

Today, we who are part of the commonwealth of Israel (Eph 2:12-13) who have been enslaved by the godless masters of our age, will soon be liberated by the coming of Messiah. It is therefore critical that we do not further enslave ourselves again by the idolatrous religious leaders of our age.

Lev 26:1  ‘Do not make idols for yourselves, and do not set up a carved image or a pillar for yourselves, and do not place a stone image in your land, to bow down to it. For I am יהוה your Elohim.

Lev 26:2  ‘Guard My Sabbaths and reverence My set-apart place. I am יהוה.

This ‘’seemingly’’ unrelated verse may well suggest one of the main reasons people fall into slavery – idolatry.

We see in this week’s Apostolic reading that slavery can also be a choice (early Moravian missionaries sold themselves as slaves to evangelize the lost) this was a choice to serve YHVH and their fellow man who were captured and in deep bondage to idolatry. If you are not able or are unwilling to embrace all of Torah, you are in the deep bondage of idolatry.

Joh 13:12  So when He had washed their feet and taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you?

Joh 13:13  “You call me Teacher and Master, and you say well, for I am.

Joh 13:14  “Then if I, Master and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.

Joh 13:15  “For I gave you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.

Joh 13:16  “Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is an emissary greater than he who sent him.

Joh 13:17  “If you know these teachings, blessed are you if you do them.

Joh 13:18  “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but that the Scripture might be filled, ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’

Joh 13:19  “Now I say to you, before it takes place, that when it does take place, you shall believe that I am.

Joh 13:20  “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send, receives Me. And he who receives Me, receives Him who sent Me.”

Many will only come into their inheritance in the kingdom when they first learn to serve with humility those that seem least deserving.

Art Katz ‘’not much the church does has captured the attention of the unsaved world – maybe men washing each other’s feet may capture their attention’’

Art Katz “the kingdom of YHVH will not come to Africa until the masters learn to serve their servants’’.

See the book of Philemon – Onesimos a runaway slave. Paul did not condemn slavery, he advocated kindness towards slaves - Phm 1:15  For he parted from you for a while, possibly because of this, so that you might have him back forever (useful as a brother, useful as a slave).

In this regard the scriptures also have instructions and warnings for slaves:

Eph 6:5  Servants, obey your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Messiah;

Eph 6:6  not with eye-service as men-pleasers, but as servants of Messiah, doing the desire of Elohim from the inner self,[a] Footnote: a Rom_6:16-23

Eph 6:7  rendering service with pleasure, as to the Master, and not to men,

Eph 6:8  knowing that whatever good anyone does, he shall receive the same from the Master, whether he is slave or free.

Eph 6:9  And, masters, do the same to them, refrain from threatening, knowing that your own Master also is in the heavens, and there is no partiality with Him.

Pro 30:21  Under three matters the earth trembles, And under four, it is unable to bear:

Pro 30:22  Under a servant(eved) when he reigns, And a fool when he is satisfied with food,

YHVH will often test slaves in order to promote them - Luk 16:12  “And if you have not been trustworthy in what is another man’s, who shall give you what is your own?

Lev 25:39  And if your brother who lives beside you has become poor, and is sold to you, you shall not compel him to serve as a bond-servant - עבדת עבד – this must be his choice – only feed men can make this choice.

Was it possible for a man to sell himself into slavery permanently? There seems to be some debate around this issue. What is the meaning of Bondservant in the Scriptures?  It is one bound to service without wages.

Php 2:5  For, let this mind be in you which was also in Messiah יהושע

Php 2:6  who, being in the form of Elohim, did not regard equality with Elohim a matter to be grasped,

Php 2:7  but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, (‘’doulos’’ used 125 times) and came to be in the likeness of men. (In the ‘’Tenach’’ the Hebrew word ‘’eved’’ is used 800 times)

Php 2:8  And having been found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, death even of a stake.

Php 2:9  Elohim, therefore, has highly exalted Him and given Him the Name which is above every name,

Mar 10:44  “And whoever wishes to be first among you, shall be servant of all.

Mar 10:45  “For even the Son of Aḏam did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Gal 5:13  For you, brothers, have been called to freedom, only do not use freedom as an occasion for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

Gal 5:14  For the entire Torah is completed in one word, in this, “You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” Lev_19:18.

All of YHVH’s counsel and His redemptive plan is best understood by His ‘’bondservants’’ Only servants who had been set free after 6 years could choose to become bondservants.

Midrash

2 Esdras 7: 20 Let many perish who are now living, rather than that the law (Torah) of YHVH that is set before them be disregarded! 21 For YHVH strictly commanded those who came into the world, when they came, what they should do to live, and what they should observe to avoid punishment. 22 Nevertheless they were not obedient, and spoke against him; they devised for themselves vain thoughts, 2 Esdras 14: 21 Your Law(Torah) has been destroyed by fire, so no one can know what you have done in the past or what you are planning to do in the future. (the Torah is the blueprint)22 Please send your Set Apart Spirit to me, so that I can write down everything that has been done in this world from the beginning, everything that was written in your Law (Torah). Then in these last days, people will be able to find the right way and obtain life if they want to."

YHVH designed His Torah to help us connect all the ‘’dots’’ to make sense of all that matters, past present and the future. His ‘’Bondservants’’ are the only group of people who will be worthy to be His Bride to rule and reign with Him forever and ever.

Being a bondservant means you have laid down all your rights, even your right to life because He owns you and you have surrendered yourself to Him and His purposes in order that harmony (or Oneness) will once again come upon all His Creation.

Zec 14:9  And יהוה shall be Sovereign over all the earth.[c] In that day there shall be one יהוה, and His Name one. Footnote: cSee footnote Isa_24:23, also Dan_2:44, Rev_11:15

The high calling of a bondservant requires His favour (grace) and enabling as well as the greatest love known to mankind – to lay down your life for another – to lay down your life for the sake of His Truth – His Torah.

Joh 15:12  “This is My command, that you love one another, as I have loved you.[b] Footnote: bSee Joh_13:34 and Joh_15:17. Joh 15:13  “No one has greater love than this: that one should lay down his life for his friends.

It is my firm conviction that these people will be the only people who will be able to endure with joy the matters that are soon to come upon all mankind and even many of this faithful remnant may perish with the ungodly in the last days. Who is able to endure these things?

Mal 3:2  “And who is able to bear the day of His coming, and who is able to stand when He appears? For He is like the fire of a refiner, and like the soap of a launderer.

‘’Such as the world has ever seen’’

Mat 24:21  “For then there shall be great distress,[c] such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. Footnote: cOr great pressure, or great affliction

In this regard consider the tragic suffering of many believers recorded in the ‘’Gulag of the Archipelago’’ and the ‘’Foxe's Book of Martyrs’’ (YouTube)

Mat 24:22  “And if those days were not shortened, no flesh would be saved, but for the sake of the chosen ones those days shall be shortened.

Mat 25:23  “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and trustworthy (bond) servant. You were trustworthy over a little, I shall set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’

Blessed are you YHVH, our Elohim, King of the Universe, you have given us your Torah of truth, and have planted everlasting life within our midst. Blessed are you, YHVH giver of the Torah – Amein.
