Parashat 1 Portion 4 Ber/Gen 5:1-6:8 Yesh/Is 30:8-15 Matt 23:1-29

The Torah is not our spiritual foundation – Yahshua is! However the Torah instructs us on how to build on the foundation of Messiah –  See footnote on “Yahshua our foundation”

Isa 30:8  And go, write it before them on a tablet, and inscribe it on a scroll, that it is for a latter day, a witness forever:
Isa 30:9  that this is a rebellious people, lying children, children who refuse to hear the Torah of יהוה,
Isa 30:10  who say to the seers, “Do not see,” and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us what is right. Speak to us what is smooth, prophesy deceits.
Isa 30:11  “Turn aside from the way, swerve from the path, cause the Set-apart One of Yisra’ĕl to cease from before us.”
Isa 30:12  Therefore thus said the Set-apart One of Yisra’ĕl, “Because you despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and rely on them,
Isa 30:13  therefore this crookedness is to you like a breach ready to fall, a bulge in a high wall, whose breaking comes suddenly, swiftly.”
Isa 30:14  And He shall break it like the breaking of the potter’s vessel, which is broken in pieces, without sparing, so that there is not found among its fragments a sherd to take fire from the hearth, or to take water from the cistern.
Isa 30:15  For thus said the Master יהוה (Adonai YHVH), the Set-apart One of Yisra’ĕl, “In returning and rest you are saved, in stillness and trust is your strength.” But you would not,

This week’s Torah portion is about a people who have recognized their present state and are trusting YHVH to transform their present state into the image of His Son Yahshua.
If we don’t have a revelation of who we truly are, we will not be able to receive the revelation of who we were meant to become.

Isa 40:25  “And to whom then do you liken Me, or to whom am I compared?” says the Set-apart One.
Isa 40:26  Lift up your eyes on high and see. Who has created these? He who is bringing out their host by number, He calls them all by name, by the greatness of His might and the strength of His power – not one is missing.

Psa 8:3  For I see Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have established.
Psa 8:4  What is man that You remember him? And the son of man that You visit him?
Psa 8:5  Yet You have made him a little less than Elohim, And have crowned him with esteem and splendour.
Psa 8:6  You made him rule over the works of Your hands; You have put all under his feet,

Our Torah Portion:

Gen 5:1  This is the book of the genealogy of Aḏam. In the day that Elohim created man, He made him in the likeness of Elohim.
Gen 5:2  Male and female He created them, and He blessed them, and called their name ‘Aḏam’ in the day they were created.
Gen 5:3  And Aḏam lived one hundred and thirty years, and brought forth a son in his own likeness, after his image, and called his name Shĕth.
From this genealogy YHVH would preserve a very very small remnant to be the Bride of Messiah.

Adam – (S121&S120) – Man – can be man or woman.

 “Sheth” (S8352 & 7896) – “Shyth” – to place or appoint.

If we combine the meaning of Adam and Sheth – we can get “man is appointed”

Gen 5:4  And after he brought forth Shĕth, the days of Aḏam were eight hundred years. And he brought forth sons and daughters.
Gen 5:5  So all the days that Aḏam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.
Gen 5:6  And Shĕth lived one hundred and five years, and brought forth Enosh.

“Enosh” (S583&582&S605) – Mortal man - desperate, incurable, desperately wicked – sorrowful or melancholic.

One of the most common titles for Yashua was the “Son of Adam”. Yahshua is referred to as the Son of Man/Adam 88 times in the Apostolic scriptures and only 47 times as the Son of Elohim.
Yahshua is also referred to as the second man and the last Adam 1 Cor 15:45-48

We could then say that the names in this Parasha  also tell us a story about Messiah.

“The Son of Man is appointed to sorrow”  This could also imply that the Son of Man was appointed to bear on himself  the wickedness of men.”  See also Is/Yes 53:3

Gen 5:7  And after he brought forth Enosh, Shĕth lived eight hundred and seven years, and brought forth sons and daughters.
Gen 5:8  So all the days of Shĕth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died.
Gen 5:9  And Enosh lived ninety years, and brought forth Qĕynan.

“Qeynan” (S7018 & S7064 & S7077) – possession – chamber or dwelling – to make a nest.

“Another possibility (and favored by us here at Abarim Publications) is that the name Kenan comes from the verb קין (qin), meaning to chant a dirge (Amos 8:10). This verb comes from the noun קינה (qina), meaning lamentation, or a sad poem which is sung (Jeremiah 7:19, Ezekiel 2:10). A strong clue that the name Kenan (with the troublesome double nun) indeed comes from this word group lies in the existence of a verb that HAW Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament gracefully skips but which is well featured in BDB Theological Dictionary. It's the verb קונן (qwnn), meaning to chant a dirge (Ezekiel 27:32, 1 Samuel 1:17) – see also S7015&6969
That way the name Kenan means Lamenter.
However, through the apparently related name Kenite, Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names notes a relation to the verb קנן (qinnen), meaning to make a nest (Isaiah 34:15). That way the name Kenan may mean Nester. Perhaps the cry of the eagle reminded the Hebrews of lamenting. Perhaps the two have nothing to do with each other.
Perhaps thinking of the nest-making verb, NOBSE Study Bible Name List reads Fixed for both Cainan and Kenan – end quote

When man realized his state, he realized his only hope was to become YHVH’s possession again. Man needed YHVH to come and take residence within his life. Man’s heart or inner chamber needed to be ruled by the Ruach of YHVH and nourished by His Torah.

The Ruach of YHVH “nested” in Yahshua – he only did what his Father showed him.

Something was wrong with man and could only be repaired if YHVH could enter into man’s life and restore him again.

So far we havethrough the meaning of the names as in order, the sentece:  “Man was placed in a desperate situation – he needed YHVH to come and “nest” in his heart..

Gen 5:10  And after he brought forth Qĕynan, Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years, and brought forth sons and daughters.
Gen 5:11  So all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years, and he died.
Gen 5:12  And Qĕynan lived seventy years, and brought forth Mahalal’ĕl.

Mahal-El(S4111&) – Praise of El – Yahshua was the praise  of Elohim. Yahshua was our only hope of becoming reconciled to YHVH so that we could bring YHVH the praise He deserved.

Jer 17:14  Heal me, O יהוה, so that I am healed. Save me, so that I am saved, for You are my praise.

Gen 5:13  After he brought forth Mahalal’ĕl, Qĕynan lived eight hundred and forty years, and brought forth sons and daughters.
Gen 5:14  So all the days of Qĕynan were nine hundred and ten years, and he died.
Gen 5:15  And Mahalal’ĕl lived sixty-five years, and brought forth Yereḏ.

“Yared/Yered” (S3382) to go downward.

Gen 5:16  And after he brought forth Yereḏ, Mahalal’ĕl lived eight hundred and thirty years, and brought forth sons and daughters.
Gen 5:17  So all the days of Mahalal’ĕl were eight hundred and ninety-five years, and he died.
Gen 5:18  And Yereḏ lived one hundred and sixty-two years, and brought forth Ḥanoḵ.

“Chanok” S2585 – means dedicated.

Yahshua dedicated himself to deliver humanity from their frightful predicament.

Gen 5:19  And after he brought forth Ḥanoḵ, Yereḏ lived eight hundred years, and brought forth sons and daughters.
Gen 5:20  So all the days of Yereḏ were nine hundred and sixty-two years, and he died.
Gen 5:21  And Ḥanoḵ lived sixty-five years, and brought forth Methushelaḥ.

Methushelach S4968 – “man of the dart” or literally “dying he shall send”
“Methuselah (Hebrew: מְתוּשֶׁלַח / מְתוּשָׁלַח, Modern Metušélaħ / MetušálaħTiberian Məṯûšélaḥ / Məṯûšālaḥ ; "Man of the dart/spear", or alternatively "his death shall bring judgment") is the man reported to have lived the longest at the age of 969 in the Hebrew Bible. Extra-biblical tradition maintains that he died on the 11th of Cheshvan of the year 1656AM (Anno Mundi, after Creation), seven days before the beginning of the Great Flood.”

Gen 5:22  And after he brought forth Methushelaḥ, Ḥanoḵ walked with Elohim three hundred years, and brought forth sons and daughters.
Gen 5:23  So all the days of Ḥanoḵ were three hundred and sixty-five years.
Gen 5:24  And Ḥanoḵ walked with Elohim. Then he was no more, for Elohim took him.
Gen 5:25  And Methushelaḥ lived one hundred and eighty-seven years, and brought forth Lemeḵ.

“Lamech” S3929 – Morfix – to become impoverished.

Etymology and meaning of the name Lamech
The word למך (lmk) does not occur in Hebrew, so we are left to guess at its meaning. BDB remains silent on the subject, but both Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names and NOBSE Study Bible Name List suggest relations to a Semitic root that doesn't occur in the Biblical narrative but which also exists in Arabic, meaning strong and robust young man. Jones' Dictionary of Old Testament Proper Names reads Powerful
To a creative audience, the name Lamech may also be seen as constructed of the particle ל (le), meaning to or towards:

מוך
The verb מוך (muk) is used to denote impoverished Israelites and occurs twice: Leviticus 25:47 and 27:8.
Gen 5:26  And after he brought forth Lemeḵ, Methushelaḥ lived seven hundred and eighty-two years, and brought forth sons and daughters.
Gen 5:27  So all the days of Methushelaḥ were nine hundred and sixty-nine years, and he died.
Gen 5:28  And Lemeḵ lived one hundred and eighty-two years, and brought forth a son,
Gen 5:29  and called his name Noaḥ, saying, “This one does comfort us concerning our work and the toil of our hands, because of the ground which יהוה has cursed.”

“Noach” S5146 – Rest or comfort.

Gen 5:30  And after he brought forth Noaḥ, Lemeḵ lived five hundred and ninety-five years, and brought forth sons and daughters.
Gen 5:31  So all the days of Lemeḵ were seven hundred and seventy-seven years, and he died.
Gen 5:32  And Noaḥ was five hundred years old, and Noaḥ brought forth Shĕm, Ḥam, and Yepheth.

So now we can read the sentence coming out of the meaning of all these names of the genealogy of ADAM: Man (Adam) is appointed to sorrow - man opened his heart to the praise of Elohim who came down to earth and dedicated himself to YHVH to the point of being willing to lay down his life for an impoverished people and so YHVH gave men rest.

“The Elohim-Man is appointed, a mortal man of sorrow is born! The Esteem of YHVH shall come down from heaven and teach men that by means of His death He shall comfort those who mourn.”

These words could also apply to Yahshua. The implications of this hidden message could be enormous. Perhaps it is only the true believers and the bride of Messiah that can identify with this message and their lives are a living testimony of the truth of this hidden message in the genealogy of Adam.

This message also ties in with the Messiah’s first sermon recorded in the book of Mattityahu/Matthew – see footnote on Yahshua’s sermons and the Torah.

Gen 6:1  And it came to be, when men began to increase on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them,
Gen 6:2  that the sons of Elohim saw the daughters of men, that they were good. And they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.
Gen 6:3  And יהוה said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever in his going astray. He is flesh, and his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”
Gen 6:4  The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of Elohim came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, the men of name.
Gen 6:5  And יהוה saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Gen 6:6  And יהוה was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.
Gen 6:7  And יהוה said, “I am going to wipe off man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping creature and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.”
Gen 6:8  But Noaḥ found favour in the eyes of יהוה.

Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-‘Olam, asher natan lanu Toraht-emet, v’chay-yeh o’lam nata-b’tochenu. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”
(Blessed are you Yahweh, our Elohim, King of the Universe, you have given us your Torah of truth, and have planted everlasting life within our midst. Blessed are you, YHVH giver of the Torah – Ameyn

Some extra notes: Yahshua is our foundation
Why are some believers in Jesus or Yahshua re-examining their spiritual foundations in these days?
There are many believers around the world who believe that Yahshua has been misrepresented in the Church for centuries. This was a problem even the earliest believers were experiencing. The apostle Paul addresses this issue in his letter to the Corinthians.
2Co 11:3  But I am afraid, lest, as the serpent deceived Ḥawwah(Eve) by his trickery, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Messiah.
2Co 11:4  For, indeed, if he who is coming proclaims another Yahshua יהושע,1 whom we have not proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different Good News which you have not accepted, you put up with it well enough!

The introduction of the Trinitarian doctrine by the early church was difficult to explain and this is still the case today. People are told it is a deep kind of mystery that you must accept by faith. Ask you average Christian to explain how there are three Gods when actually there is only one. Christians proudly call themselves Monotheists when in actual fact they are Polytheists – having more than one God.

Mat 7:21  “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Master, Master,’ shall enter into the reign of the heavens, but he who is doing the desire of My Father in the heavens.
Mat 7:22  “Many shall say to Me in that day, ‘Master, Master, have we not prophesied in Your Name, and cast out demons in Your Name, and done many mighty works in Your Name?’
Mat 7:23  “And then I shall declare to them, ‘I never knew you, depart from Me, you who work lawlessness!’1 Footnote: 1 See v. 15.
Mat 7:24  “Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does them, shall be like a wise man who built his house on the rock,
Mat 7:25  and the rain came down, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.
Mat 7:26  “And everyone who hears these words of Mine, and does not do them,1 shall be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand, Footnote: 1John 3:36.
Mat 7:27  and the rain came down, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and they beat on that house, and it fell, and great was its fall.”

Building on a faulty perception of Messiah can cause great loss of reward in our lives.

1Co 3:10  According to the favour of Elohim which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But each one should look how he builds on it.
1Co 3:11  For no one is able to lay any other foundation except that which is laid, which is יהושע (Yahushua/Yahshua/Yehoshua/Yeshua) Messiah.
1Co 3:12  And if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,
1Co 3:13  each one’s work shall be revealed, for the day shall show it up, because it is revealed by fire. And the fire shall prove the work of each one, what sort it is.
1Co 3:14  If anyone’s work remains, which he has built on, he shall receive a reward.
1Co 3:15  If anyone’s work is burned, he shall suffer loss, but he himself shall be saved, but so as through fire.

Pro 10:25  As the whirlwind passes by, The wrong one is no more, But the righteous has an everlasting foundation.

The Torah is not our spiritual foundation – Yahshua is! However the Torah instructs us on how to build on the foundation of Messiah –

Rom 10:4  For Messiah is the goal1 of the ‘Torah unto righteousness’ to everyone who believes. Footnote: 1Or end purpose; not termination.

Who then is Yahshua?
·         He is the only one who can acceptably mediate between man and YHVH (1Ti 2:5  For there is one Elohim,[1] and one Mediator between Elohim and men, the Man Messiah יהושע, Foornote: 11 Cor. 8:6, Eph. 4:6, Mk. 12:29-34).
·         YHVH has given Yahshua all authority and power in heaven and on earth – Mat 28:18 “And יהושע came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.” Also Act 2:36 “Therefore let all the house of Yisra’ĕl know for certain that Elohim has made this Yahshua, whom you impaled, both Master and Messiah.”
·         The fullness of YHVH dwells in Yahshua – Col 2:9 Because in Him dwells all the completeness of the Mightiness bodily,...
·         YHVH, the Father is the only true Elohim and Yahshua is His Son (Yochanan/Joh 17:3:“And this is everlasting life, that they should know You, the only true Elohim, and Yahshua Messiah whom You have sent.” 1Co 8:6 “for us there is one Elohim, the Father, from whom all came and for whom we live, and one Master Yahshua Messiah, through whom all came and through whom we live.” Col 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the Name of the Master Yahshua, giving thanks to Elohim the Father through Him. Joh 20:17  יהושע said to her, “Do not hold on to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father. But go to My brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My Elohim and your Elohim.’ ” Yahshua is not the FATHER.  YHVH is the Father. Yahshua is the Moshiach (Anointed one) that the Father had in plan and mind and in his bosom from the foundation of the earth to be born at the appointed time by a woman under Torah. Gal 4:4  “But when the completion of the time came, Elohim sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under Torah, Gal 4:5  to redeem those who were under Torah, in order to receive the adoption as sons”. Joh 10:29  “My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all. And no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. Joh 10:30  “I and My Father are one.”1 Footnote: 1See 17:11, 17:21-23. Does that mean they are the same being? Yahshua said something similar in Jn.17:22, “And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:” Here again, Yahshua says he and the Father are one. But he also prays that his followers will be one in the same sense that he and Yahweh are one. That is a oneness of mind, purpose, and will, not a oneness of being. And it certainly does not mean there are two Yahweh’s, It also doesn’t mean that Yahshua is in fact YHVH Himself.  Joh 14:28  “You heard that I said to you, ‘I am going away and I am coming to you.’ If you did love Me, you would have rejoiced that I said, ‘I am going to the
Father,’ for My Father is greater than I.  YHVH is echad (ONE) and He is greater than Yahshua who is the Anointed One, the Son who was in the plan and purpose of YHVH before the foundation of the earth
·         Yahshua is seated at the right hand side of YHVH and is waiting for his Father YHVH’s command to return to earth - Heb 10:12  But He, having offered one slaughter offering for sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of Elohim, Heb 10:13  waiting from that time onward until His enemies are made a footstool for His feet. Mat 24:36  “But concerning that day and the hour no one knows, not even the messengers of the heavens, but My Father only.1 Footnote:1Mk. 13:32.)

Yahshua’s sermons in the book of Mattityahu/Matthew and how they relate to the books of the Torah.
Five Major Discourses or Sermons in Matthew

  1. The Sermon on the Mount (5:1‑7:28) – “Ha drasha al ha ar”
Yahshua’s first sermon ties in with the theme of our Torah portion as well as the theme of the first book of the Torah – Bereshiet.

Mat 5:3  “Blessed are the poor in spirit, because theirs is the reign of the heavens.
Mat 5:4  “Blessed are those who mourn, because they shall be comforted.
Mat 5:5  “Blessed are the meek, because they shall inherit the earth.1 Footnote: 1Ps. 37:9, 11, 22, 29, 34.
Mat 5:6  “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,1 because they shall be filled. Footnote: 1Isa. 55:1-2, Mt. 4:4, John 6:48-51.
Mat 5:7  “Blessed are the compassionate, because they shall obtain compassion.

  1. The Messianic family tree (10:1‑42)
Note the similarities between Shemot/Exodus and the opening verses of Yahshua’s second drasha
Remember the word “Shemot” means “names.”
The same two words are used in the opening chapter of Exodus – ve ele shemot – “these are the names”
Exo 1:1  And these are the names….
Mat 10:2 – in Hebrew ואלה שמות
 Mat 10:2  And these are the names of the twelve emissaries: first, Shimʽon, who is called Kĕpha, and Andri his brother; Yaʽaqoḇ the son of Zaḇdai, and Yoḥanan his brother;

  1. The Parable/Priestly Discourse (13:1‑53)
Vayikra/Leviticus – is about the calling of a set apart priesthood – a people who hear the call of YHVH to dedicate themselves to Him and to His Service – “va yikra means and He called” Yahshua speaks in parables because only those who are called to be set apart priesthood will understand the parables Yahshua taught.
Mat 13:10  And the taught ones came and said to Him, “Why do You speak to them in parables?”
Mat 13:11  And He answering, said to them, “Because it has been given to you to know the secrets of the reign of the heavens, but to them it has not been given.
Mat 13:12  “For whoever possesses, to him more shall be given, and he shall have overflowingly;  but whoever does not possess, even what he possesses shall be taken away from him.
Mat 13:13  “Because of this I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.
Mat 13:14  “And in them the prophecy of Yeshayahu is completely filled, which says, ‘Hearing you shall hear and by no means understand, and seeing you shall see and by no means perceive,
Mat 13:15  for the heart of this people has become thickened, and their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, lest they should understand with their heart, and turn back, and I heal them.’
Mat 13:16  “And blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear,
Mat 13:17  for truly I say to you, that many prophets and righteous ones longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.

  1. The Calling and Counting of the Kehelah/Congretation of YHVH (17:22‑18:35)
Mat 17:23  and they shall kill Him, and the third day He shall be raised up.” And they were deeply grieved.
Mat 17:24  And when they came into Kephar Naḥum, those who received the tax came to Kĕpha and said, “Does your Teacher not pay the tax?”
Mat 17:25  He said, “Yea.” And when he came into the house, יהושע spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Shimʽon? From whom do the sovereigns of the earth take toll or tax, from their own sons or from the strangers?”
Mat 17:26  Kĕpha then said to Him, “From the strangers.” יהושע said to him, “Then the sons are exempt.
Mat 17:27  “But, lest we cause them to stumble, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you shall find a piece of money. Take that and give it to them for Me and you.”

This is interesting Yahshua is talking about his death and then goes onto paying the temple tax – is there a connection.

The book of Bamidbar is about been numbering the redeemed of Yisrael in the wilderness. This was done by paying a tax – a beka– those who did so were numbered amongst the redeemed.
The Hebrew word for numbered is “Gulguletam” where we get the word “Golgatha”

Num 1:2  “Take a census of all the congregation of the children of Yisra’ĕl, by their clans, by their fathers’ houses, according to the number of names, every male, head by head,

Translation – Lift up the head of the sons of Yisrael – the families of their father’s houses – numbering their names each male by his skull.

The word “gulgolet” where the name Golgotha comes from was a strange way to express the counting of people…

Mat 18:11  “For the Son of Aḏam has come to save what was lost.
Mat 22:14  “For many are called, but few are chosen.”1 Footnote:1See 20:16.

  1. The Apocalyptic Discourse (24:1‑25:46)
The only way we will understand and survive the last days is if we have internalized the Torah.
The book of Devarim/Deuteronomy – Words – means words or things – this book was the entire Torah retold in Moshe’s life and words. He was able to internalize and reproduce the Torah in his own words.
Mat 24:3  And as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the taught ones came to Him separately, saying, “Say to us, when shall this be, and what is the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
Mat 24:4  And יהושע answering, said to them, “Take heed that no one leads you astray.

Mat 24:5  “For many shall come in My Name, saying, ‘I am the Messiah,’(anointed one) and they shall lead many astray.
