Parashat 13 Portion 48 ‘’Shemot’’ Ex 1:1-21- Is 62:2-9 - 63:7-9 Hosea 14:2-10, Mic 7:18-20 Mal3:4-24

Blessed are You, HaKadosh Baruch Hu, (‘’The Set Apart One Blessed is He) Creator of the universe, whose blessings have fallen upon all mankind through Moshiach Ben David – The Tree of Life – who established the root and fruit of Your Torah on earth through which all the families of the earth are blessed.

Please, YHVH, our Elohim, sweeten the words of Your Torah in our hearts and in the hearts of Your people, the family of Israel. May we and our offspring and the offspring of Your people, the house of Jacob – and all Jacob’s adopted family – know Your Name and study Your Torah empowering us to sincerely love one another and to love You above all. Please uncover our eyes and open our hearts that we may carefully examine and understand the marvels and mysteries of Your Torah- Amein.

Calling YHVH HaKadosh Baruch Hu – ‘’The Set Apart One Blessed is He’’ - (often phonetically rendered as Kodesh Barachu or Hakodesh Borchu) is significant because it represents one of the most common and foundational titles for YHVH in rabbinic Judaism, bridging the gap between His infinite distance and His immediate closeness to humanity

ואלה שׁמות – ‘’these are names’’ (note no inclusion of the definite article ‘’the’’ because the list of names has never stopped)

Man creates religious systems (doctrines and creeds) to seek to know and make YHVH known – YHVH appoints men and women to make His Name and His ways known to all mankind – yet  mankind is unable to escape the bondage of corruption here on earth.

Religion enslaves – only the Messiah will eventually set us free.

According to biblical chronology, Israel were slaves in Egypt for either 430 years or 210 years, depending on how the text is calculated –

Exodus 12:40: "Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt was 430 years."

Genesis 15:13: YHVH tells Abraham that his descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, where they will be enslaved and mistreated for 400 years (a rounded figure of the 430 years, accounting for the years they spent in slavery after Joseph's generation died) -

The Septuagint and some Jewish interpretations understand the 430 years as covering the period from the covenant with Abraham to the Exodus – various views exist.

Mankind up to this present day has never fully recovered from this Egyptian slavery – and all humanity is about to be plunged into an evil global captivity such as mankind it has never known.

‘’In the latter days we shall understand it perfectly’’ - Jer_30:24

Some might say ‘’ but Christ has set me free, I’m nobodies slave’’ if so, why does the state lay claim to more than half your income? We just need to look around us – Mankind has never created a religious, political, social, or educational system that has not enslaved the masses.

We all wrestle with principalities and powers of darkness.

In spite of these harsh realities -

Psa 24:1  The earth belongs to יהוה, And all that fills it – The world and those who dwell in it.

Satan does not own a single atom of creation. Instead, he is merely the "god" over the corrupt, temporary spirit of the times—the religious cultural mindsets, pride, and false philosophies of unredeemed humanity.

2Co 4:4  in whom the mighty one of this age (‘’ God of this world’’ ho theos tou aiōnos toutou. – Gk word aiōn does not mean the physical planet (kosmos). It means "this present age" or the current temporal epoch) has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, so that the enlightening of the Good News of the esteem of Messiah, who is the likeness of Elohim, does not shine on them

"This present age" legally began the moment Adam and Eve succumbed to temptation and rebelled.

Act 1:6  So when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, “Master, would You at this time restore the reign to Yisra’ěl?”c Footnote: cAlso see Luk_1:33

Act 1:7  And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.

Act 1:8  “But you shall receive power when the Set-apart Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Yerushalayim, and in all Yehuah and Shomeron, and to the end of the earth.”

The Truth Will Set Us Free

Joh 8:31  So יהושע said to those Yehuim who believed Him, “If you stay in My Word, you are truly My taught ones,

Joh 8:32  and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Joh 8:33  They answered Him, “We are the seed of Araham, and have been servants to no one at any time. How do you say, ‘You shall become free’?”

Joh 8:34  יהושע answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone doing sin is a servant of sin.

Joh 8:35  “And the servant does not stay in the house forever – a son stays forever.

Joh 8:36  “If, then, the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.

Joh 8:37  “I know that you are the seed of Araham, but you seek to kill Me, because My Word has no place in you.

Joh 8:38  “I speak what I have seen with My Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.”

The important part is λεύθεροι σεσθε (eleutheroi esesthe), meaning:

“you will be free” or “you shall be free.”

So grammatically, it is future tense, not past tense – vs 36

We keep on ‘’running back to Egypt’’ that’s why we have ‘’Pesach’’ every year on the 14th of Aviv.

By saying "Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man... you have no life in you" (John 6:53), Yahshua was identifying himself as the Ultimate Passover Lamb.

Joh 6:53  יהושע therefore said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Aam and drink His blood, you possess no life in yourselves

Joh 6:54  “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood possesses everlasting life, and I shall raise him up in the last day.

And yet, Israel Increases Greatly in Egypt – in spite of being enslaved – and so do we.

Exo 1:1  And these are the names of the children of Yisra’ěl who came to Mitsrayim with Ya‛aqo, each one with his household: (many more names to come) Yehuah; (‘’praise’’)

Exo 1:3  Yissasar,(‘’reward or wages’’) Zeulun, (‘’dwelling or cohabitation’’) and Binyamin; (‘’son of my right hand’’)

Exo 1:4  Dan (‘’judge’’) and Naphtali,(‘’my struggle’’) Gaḏ (‘’good fortune’’) and Ashěr. (‘’contentment’’)

"Behold, a Son is born! Hearing Him makes us joined to YHVH, overflowing into praise. Though judgment and wrestling come against us, a company comes who are happy because of our reward. YHVH will establish a dwelling place, and He shall add to us the Son of His right hand."

The phrasing immediately following the names contains a grammatical anomaly. Exodus 1:1 says:

"...בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל הַבָּאִים מִצְרָיְמָה..."
...bnei Yisrael haba'im Mitzraimah...

Haba'im is a present participle, literally meaning "who are coming to Egypt." Commentators like Rav Moshe Feinstein note that the Torah phrases this in the continuous present tense. It signals that this dynamic isn't trapped in past history. Every generation facing spiritual exile, or joining the Jewish people, is actively "coming" into the story

Exo 1:5  And all those who were descendants of Ya‛aqo were seventy beings, as Yosěph was already in Mitsrayim.

Exo 1:6  And Yosěph died, and all his brothers, and all that generation.

Exo 1:7  And the children of Yisra’ěl were fruitful and increased very much, multiplied and became very strong, and the land was filled with them.

Pharaoh Oppresses Israel

Exo 1:8  Then a new sovereign arose over Mitsrayim, who did not know Yosěph,

Exo 1:9  and he said to his people, “See, the people of the children of Yisra’ěl are more and stronger than we,

Exo 1:10  come, let us act wisely towards them, lest they increase, and it shall be when fighting befalls us, that they shall join our enemies and fight against us, and shall go up out of the land.”

Exo 1:11  So they set slave-masters over them to afflict them with their burdens, and they built for Pharaoh supply cities, Pithom and Ra‛amses.

Exo 1:12  But the more they afflicted them, the more they increased and grew, and they were in dread of the children of Yisra’ěl.

Exo 1:13  And the Mitsrites made the children of Yisra’ěl serve with harshness,

Exo 1:14  and they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar, and in brick, and in all kinds of work in the field, all their work which they made them do was with harshness.

2Co 4:7  And we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the excellence of the power might be of Elohim, and not of us –

2Co 4:8  being hard pressed on every side,b but not crushed; being perplexed, but not in despair; Footnote: bSee 1Co_1:8

2Co 4:9  being persecuted, but not forsaken; being thrown down, but not destroyed;

2Co 4:10  always bearing about in the body the dying of the Master יהושע, that the life of יהושע might also be manifested in our body.

2Co 4:11  For we, the living, are always delivered to death for the sake of יהושע, that the life of יהושע might also be manifested in our mortal flesh,

2Co 4:12  so that death indeed is working in us, but the life in you.

Exo 1:15  Then the sovereign of Mitsrayim spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Pu‛ah,

Exo 1:16  and he said, “When you deliver the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a son, then you shall put him to death, but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.”

Exo 1:17  But the midwives feared Elohim, and did not do as the sovereign of Mitsrayim commanded them, and kept the male children alive.

Exo 1:18  So the sovereign of Mitsrayim called for the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and kept the male children alive?”

Exo 1:19  And the midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Mitsrian women. For they are lively and give birth before the midwives come to them.”

Exo 1:20  So Elohim was good to the midwives, and the people increased and became very numerous.

Exo 1:21  And it came to be, because the midwives feared Elohim, that He provided households for them.

Exo 1:22  And Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Throw every son who is born into the river, and keep alive every daughter.”

Pharaoh acts as a clear type (foreshadowing) of Satan. Recognizing that the saviour of Israel must be born a male descendant of Abraham, the "serpent" attempts a pre-emptive strike.

Prophecy scholars note that the weapon the enemy chooses is ultimately the weapon YHVH uses to destroy him. Pharaoh tried to drown the seed of Israel in the water; forty years later, YHVH drowned Pharaoh and the entire Egyptian army in the waters of the Red Sea (Exodus 14).

We must address a perception that has prevailed in the church for many centuries – the perception that there is a separation between the Old and New Testaments – the saddest and most destructive deception of Christianity.

The artificial wall erected between the two testaments has deeply fractured the unified story of Scripture, obscuring the fact that the New Testament does not replace the Old, but rather unveils and completes it.

When you treat the Scriptures as one seamless, continuous covenant document, the text comes alive with a clarity that the "separation" doctrine completely misses

When Paul wrote that "all Scripture is breathed out by Elohim" (2 Timothy 3:16), or when Yahshua explained the prophecies concerning Himself on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:27), there was no New Testament canon.

The only "Scripture" they possessed was the Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings (the Tanakh). The entire early Church understood the Messiah's identity solely by diving deep into the Hebrew text, not by separating themselves from it.

The patterns of the Torah are the exact keys needed to unlock the Apostolic scriptures.

We will briefly examine the first book of the Apostolic scriptures to prove our point:

The book of Matthew – The Messiah’s origins were carefully recorded - Mathew begins with Yahshua’s family tree – this genealogy was very important because it clearly proved that Yahshua did not just appear out of heaven – he had a centuries long family line that in Matthew begins with Abraham and in Luke includes Adam.

In the account of Yahshua’s life and ministry Matthew records 5 sermons Rabbi Yahshua teaches and these 5 sermons introduce each book of the Torah.

Yahshua’ first sermon – the sermon on the mount – Mat 5-7:

This sermon functions as the foundation of all of Yahshua’s and the Apostles teachings and ministry recorded in all the books of the Apostolic scriptures.

Yahshua intentionally delivers these teaching on a mount – which compares to Mose receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai.

Yahshua’s second sermon – the sending out of the messenger’s sermon – Mat 10

This sermon closely parallels the book of Exodus, focusing on redemption, commissioning, and sending a community into a hostile world – the opening Hebrew word in Mat 10;2 and Ex 1 are the same - ואלה שמות- ואלה שׁמות – ‘’these are the names ..’’

Just as YHVH called Israel out of Egypt to be a nation of priests, Yahshua calls His twelve disciples to be a set apart priesthood  to reveal and unfold the mysteries of the Torah and establish YHVH ‘s ancient covenant with Jews and gentiles – the ancient covenant was not changed, it was rejuvenated – renewed and established the foundation of the early called out covenant community.

In Exodus, YHVH sends plagues to demonstrate power over Egypt. In Matthew 10:1, Yahshua gives His disciples authority over unclean spirits and diseases, to bring freedom and healing

Yahshua sends them out with no money, extra clothes, or sandals (Matthew 10:9-10). This directly mirrors the dependence on divine provision that Israel experienced during the Exodus wilderness wanderings (Luke 22:35-38)

Yahshua’s third sermon – Mat 13 – Parables of the kingdom.

Now Yahshua focuses on the central focus of the kingdom – Yahshua’s ministry now makes a major shift from speaking in parables to the crowds to where Yahshua now begins explaining these parables of the kingdom to his disciples in private.

Mat 13:10  Then the disciples came and asked Yahshua, "Why do you speak to people in parables?"

Mat 13:11  He answered them, "You have been given knowledge about the secrets of the kingdom from heaven, but it hasn't been given to them…

It parallels the book of Leviticus, focusing on a set apart priesthood, the separation of the pure from the impure, (Lev 10:10)

Leviticus is deeply concerned with distinguishing the set apart (what comes from YHVH) from the common, (what comes from men) and the clean from the unclean.

Yahshua’s fourth sermon is about instructions for the assembly of set apart ones (Khehelah) in the ‘’galut’’ or outside the promised land – Mat 18:

It provides practical instructions for how the newly formed community of believers must relate to one another. It parallels the book of Numbers, focusing on community order, leadership, dealing with conflict, and organizing YHVH’s people as they travel together through the world.

Yahshua’s fifth sermon delivered privately to His disciples on the Mount of Olives just before His execution – Mat 24-25:

This sermon parallels the book of Deuteronomy. Both serve as a final farewell address, delivering severe warnings, laying out the choices between life and death, and looking ahead to the future inheritance of YHVH's people.

In Deuteronomy, Moses stands on a mountain looking across the Jordan River into the Promised Land, knowing his death is imminent. In Matthew, Yahshua stands on the mount of Olives looking across at Jerusalem and the Temple, knowing He is about to be killed.

Blessings and Curses: Deuteronomy 28 famously outlines the blessings for obedience and the horrific curses for disobedience. Similarly, Matthew 24–25 outlines the catastrophic consequences of Jerusalem's impending judgment alongside the ultimate rewards for those who remain faithful.

Several scholars claim that the coming of the Messiah was fully imagined in the ancient Jewish texts. Yahshua, moreover, was embraced by many Jews as this person, and his core teachings were not at all a break from Jewish beliefs and teachings. Most of Yahshua earliest followers were simply Jewish. What came to be known as Christianity came much later, as religious and political leaders sought to impose a new religious orthodoxy that was not present at the time of Yahshua’s life and did not seek to honour and follow YHVH’s Torah.

Currently the world is experiencing ‘’the coming birth pains of Messiah’’ (or Chevelai HaMashiach).

In the context of the biblical phrase Chevlei Mashiach (the birth pains of the Messiah), this concept has profound implications for the global community of believers—the Body of Messiah Jew and gentile.

The imagery of a woman in labour dictates that the current suffering is not meaningless destruction. Instead, it represents the violent transition into a new state of being - For the Body of Messiah, the climax of these birth pains results in a mature, unified community that embraces and internalizes the Torah of Moses – the Root of the faith- and manifests the fruit of this faith as declared and witnessed in the Apostolic scriptures – for at least the next 1000 years.

For truly, I say to you, till the heaven and the earth pass away not one of YHVH’s Words will pass away from both the Torah and Apostolic scriptures.

And whoever, then, changes one of the least of these Words, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the reign of the heavens; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens.

Psa 119:89  For ever, YHVH, Your word is settled in heaven.

Mat 24:34  “Truly, I say to you, this generation shall by no means pass away until all this takes place.

Mat 24:35  “The heaven and the earth shall pass away, but My words shall by no means pass away.

Blessed are you YHVH, our Elohim, King of the Universe, you have given us your Torah of truth and have planted everlasting life within our midst. Blessed are you, YHVH giver of the Torah – Amein.
