Parashat 50 Portion 145 – Ki Tavo - Dev 26:1-29:9 Yesh/Is 60:1-22 Col 3:1-17

The events described in this Torah portion are connected to the feast of Sukkot. This will be the first appointment we have with YHVH in the millennial kingdom. The instruction around this event as given to us in this Torah portion clearly establishes the kind of foundation that will be established as we enter into the millennial kingdom of our Messiah.

Once again the tone for the Torah portion is set by the title and opening words. The sages remind us that the title “Ki Tavo” is presented in its future tense form. The use of this kind of language suggests to us some future time when the land of Yisrael will be divided according to the inheritance of the different tribes of Yisrael. This event will take place at the commencement of the Messianic age.  (Ez 47:22,23)

This is parashat 50. The number 50 reminds us of the Jubilee year. The year where all that we have lost – including the land of Yisrael -  is returned to us. Maybe this parashah reveals one of the most profound secrets of how the kingdom of YHVH will return to its rightful owners.

Mar 4:11  And He said to them, “To you it has been given to know the secret of the reign of Elohim, but to those who are outside, all are done in parables,
Mar 4:12  so that ‘seeing they see but do not perceive, and hearing they hear but do not understand, lest they should turn and their sins be forgiven them.’ ”1 Footnote: 1Mt.13:15.

Isa 60:1  “Arise, shine, for your light has come! And the esteem of יהוה has risen upon you.
Isa 60:2  “For look, darkness covers the earth, and thick darkness the peoples. But יהוה arises over you, and His esteem is seen upon you.
Isa 60:3  “And the gentiles shall come to your light1, and sovereigns to the brightness of your rising. Footnote: 1Isa. 60:19,20, Rev. 21:23,24.
Isa 60:4  “Lift up your eyes all around and see: all of them have gathered, they have come to you; your sons come from afar, and your daughters are supported on the side.
Isa 60:5  “Then you shall see and be bright, and your heart shall throb and swell, for the wealth of the sea is turned to you, the riches of the gentiles come to you.

Col 3:1  If, then, you were raised with Messiah, seek the matters which are above, where Messiah is, seated at the right hand of Elohim.
Col 3:2  Mind the matters above, not those on the earth.
Col 3:3  For you have died, and your life has been hidden with Messiah in Elohim.
Col 3:4  When the Messiah, who is our life, is manifested, then you also shall be manifested with Him in esteem.
Col 3:5  Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: whoring, uncleanness, passion, evil desire and greed of gain, which is idolatry.
Col 3:6  Because of these the wrath of Elohim is coming upon the sons of disobedience,1 Footnote: 1Eph. 2:2, Eph. 5:6.
Col 3:7  in which you also once walked when you lived in them.

General Overview: The Israelites are commanded to bring the first of their fruit to the Temple, and to deliver all tithes to their proper recipients. Moshe explains how the blessings and curses are to be proclaimed on Mts. Gerizzim and Ebal when the Hebrew nation enters into Israel. He then details the blessings they will receive for following the commandments of the Torah, and the calamities which will result from disregarding them.

These events possibly point to future prophetic end time events: Many non Jewish people who desire to return to Israel will be able to return. The growing number of restless believers in Yahshua around the world wanting to return to Israel is proof of this. However this Torah portion clearly lays down the conditions required to enter into the land and to STAY in the land. It appears that many may be called to return to the land but few may experience the blessing of staying in the land. (Matt 22:14)

Aliyah Rishon.

This section introduces us to the mitzvah of bikurim,(firstfruit) the requirement to bring one's first fruits to the Set Apart Temple. This mitzvah(commandment) applies to fruits and produce grown in the land of Israel, and only those for which the land of Israel is praised: wheat, barley, dates, figs, grapes, pomegranates and olives. When in the Temple, the owner of the fruits recites a prayer acknowledging his humble past as well as the struggle he had to go through to enter into the land. The prayer includes a declaration that no part of the tithe has been withheld and the priest presents the prayer and the offering before YHVH.
During Temple times, Hebrew farmers were required to separate from their produce several different tithes (three tithes). These were distributed to the priests (Levites), the poor, and one tithe which were eaten by its owners in Jerusalem.

Deu 26:1  “And it shall be, when you come – (Ki Tavo) into the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you as an inheritance, and you possess it and dwell in it,
Deu 26:2  that you shall take some of the first of all the fruits of the soil which you bring from your land that יהוה your Elohim is giving you, and shall put it in a basket and go to the place where יהוה your Elohim chooses to make His Name dwell there.
Deu 26:3  “And you shall come to the one who is priest in those days, and say to him, ‘I shall declare today to יהוה your Elohim that I have come to the land which יהוה swore to our fathers to give us.’
Deu 26:4  “And the priest shall take the basket from your hand and place it before the altar of יהוה your Elohim.
Deu 26:5  “And you shall answer and say before יהוה your Elohim, ‘My father was a perishing Aramean, and he went down to Mitsrayim and sojourned there with few men. And there he became a nation, great, mighty, and numerous.
Deu 26:6  ‘But the Mitsrites did evil to us, and afflicted us, and imposed hard labour on us.
Deu 26:7  ‘Then we cried out to יהוה Elohim of our fathers, and יהוה heard our voice and saw our affliction and our toil and our oppression.
Deu 26:8  ‘And יהוה brought us out of Mitsrayim with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm, with great fear and with signs and wonders.
Deu 26:9  ‘And He brought us to this place and has given us this land, “a land flowing with milk and honey.”
Deu 26:10  ‘And now, see, I have brought the first-fruits of the land which You, O יהוה, have given me.’ Then you shall place it before יהוה your Elohim, and bow down before יהוה your Elohim,
Deu 26:11  and shall rejoice in all the good which יהוה your Elohim has given to you and your house, you and the Lĕwite and the stranger who is among you.
Deu 26:12  “When you have completed tithing all the tithe of your increase in the third year, which is the year of tithing, and have given it to the Lĕwite, to the stranger, to the fatherless, and to the widow, and they have eaten within your gates and have been satisfied,
Deu 26:13  then you shall say before יהוה your Elohim, ‘I have put away the set-apart portion from my house, and also have given it to the Lĕwite, and to the stranger, and to the fatherless, and to the widow, according to all Your command which You have commanded me. I have not transgressed Your commands, nor have I forgotten.
Deu 26:14  ‘I have not eaten any of it when in mourning, nor have I removed any of it for any unclean use, nor given any of it for the dead. I have obeyed the voice of יהוה my Elohim, I have done according to all that You have commanded me.
Deu 26:15  ‘Look from Your set-apart dwelling place, from the heavens, and bless Your people Yisra’ĕl and the land which You have given us, as You swore to our fathers, “a land flowing with milk and honey.” ’
Deu 26:16  “Today יהוה your Elohim is commanding you to do these laws and right-rulings. And you shall guard and do them with all your heart and with all your being.
Deu 26:17  “You have today caused יהוה to proclaim to be your Elohim, and to walk in His ways and guard His laws, and His commands, and His right-rulings, and to obey His voice.
Deu 26:18  “And יהוה has caused you to proclaim today to be His people, a treasured possession, as He has spoken to you, and to guard all His commands,
Deu 26:19  so as to set you high above all nations which He has made, for a praise, and for a name, and for esteem, and for you to be a set-apart people to יהוה your Elohim, as He has spoken.”

The sages believe that this parashah established the foundation for those returning to the land. The very first requirement to be undertaken by those who desired to enter the land is that they had to declare that they had not withheld any of the tithe from YHVH. It appears from the Torah that there were three tithes. First the Levites tithe; the second tithe to be used for Sukkot and finally a tithe for the poor, the widow and orphan.
When you rob YHVH of tithes – you curse Him. When you curse Him the whole foundation of your life becomes flawed.

Mal 3:8  “Would a man rob Elohim? Yet you are robbing Me! But you said, ‘In what have we robbed You?’ In the tithe and the offering!
Mal 3:9  “You have cursed Me with a curse, for you are robbing Me, this nation, all of it!
Mal 3:10  “Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, and let there be food in My house. And please prove Me in this,” said יהוה of hosts, “whether I do not open for you the windows of the heavens, and shall pour out for you boundless blessing!

They also had to declare that they were not an ethnically superior people. It would be YHVH that would give then an exalted status, not because of them but because of His love for them.
We must add here that those who leave “Egypt/Mitzraim”(20%) will not leave empty handed.

Aliyah Sheni.

Deu 27:1  And Mosheh, with the elders of Yisra’ĕl, commanded the people, saying, “Guard all the commands which I am commanding you today.

Deu 32:47  “For it is not a worthless Word for you, because it is your life, and by this Word you prolong your days on the soil which you pass over the Yardĕn to possess.”

Deu 27:2  “And it shall be, on the day when you pass over the Yardĕn to the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you, that you shall set up for yourselves large stones, and plaster them with plaster,
Deu 27:3  and write on them all the Words of this Torah, when you have passed over, so that you go into the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you, ‘a land flowing with milk and honey,’ as יהוה Elohim of your fathers has spoken to you.
Deu 27:4  “And it shall be, when you have passed over the Yardĕn, that on Mount Ěyḇal you set up these stones, which I command you today, and you shall plaster them with plaster,
Deu 27:5  and build an altar to יהוה your Elohim there, an altar of stones – do not use an iron tool on them.
Deu 27:6  “Build the altar of יהוה your Elohim with complete stones, and you shall offer burnt offerings on it to יהוה your Elohim,
Deu 27:7  and shall offer peace offerings, and eat there, and rejoice before יהוה your Elohim.
Deu 27:8  “And you shall write all the Words of this Torah on the stones – plainly and well.”
Deu 27:9  And Mosheh and the priests, the Lĕwites, spoke to all Yisra’ĕl, saying, “Be silent and hear, O Yisra’ĕl: This day you have become the people of יהוה your Elohim,
Deu 27:10  and you shall obey the voice of יהוה your Elohim, and do His commands and His laws which I command you today.”

Aliyah Shlishi.

Deu 27:11  And Mosheh commanded the people on that day, saying,
Deu 27:12  “These are to stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people, when you have passed over the Yardĕn: Shimʽon, and Lĕwi, and Yehuḏah, and Yissasḵar, and Yosĕph, and Binyamin.
Deu 27:13  “And these are to stand on Mount Ěyḇal to curse: Re’uḇĕn, Gaḏ, and Ashĕr, and Zeḇulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
Deu 27:14  “And the Lĕwites shall speak with a loud voice and say to all the men of Yisra’ĕl:
Deu 27:15  ‘Cursed is the man who makes a carved or moulded image, an abomination to יהוה, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ And all the people shall answer and say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:16  ‘Cursed is he who makes light of his father or his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:17  ‘Cursed is he who moves his neighbour’s boundary.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:18  ‘Cursed is he who misleads the blind in the way.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:19  ‘Cursed is he who twists the right-ruling of the stranger, the fatherless, and widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:20  ‘Cursed is he who lies with his father’s wife, because he has uncovered his father’s bed.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:21  ‘Cursed is he who lies with any beast.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:22  ‘Cursed is he who lies with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:23  ‘Cursed is he who lies with his mother-in-law.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:24  ‘Cursed is he who smites his neighbour secretly.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:25  ‘Cursed is he who takes a bribe to slay an innocent being.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:26  ‘Cursed is he who does not establish the Words of this Torah.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’

Midrash on vs 15 - Rom 1:22  Claiming to be wise, they became fools,
Rom 1:23  and changed the esteem of the incorruptible Elohim into the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds and of four-footed beasts and of reptiles.
Rom 1:24  Therefore Elohim gave them up to uncleanness in the lust of their hearts, to disrespect their bodies among themselves, (gay and lesbian movement)
Rom 1:25  who changed the truth of Elohim into the falsehood, and worshipped and served what was created rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amĕn.

In the physical realm we see how people even believers have placed an inordinate affection of Yahveh’s creation.
In the spiritual realm we see how religious men have created ideas and doctrines that misrepresent the image of YHVH.
The evidence of this idolatry is the hostile response one receives when expressing concern or when challenging such inordinate affections or misrepresentations of what is right and acceptable to YHVH according to Torah.

Vs 17 - Psa 16:5  יהוה is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You uphold my lot.
Psa 16:6  Boundary lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Indeed, a good inheritance is mine.

We are meant to encourage people find their goodly inheritance in this life and not prevent or take from them what YHVH intended for them to have.

Aliyah Reviee.

Deu 28:56  “The tender and the delicate woman among you, who have not tried to set the sole of her foot on the ground because of her delicateness and tenderness, her eye is evil against the husband of her bosom, and against her son, and against her daughter,
Deu 28:57  and against her seed which comes out from between her feet, and her children whom she bears, for she eats them in secret for lack of all, in the siege and distress with which your enemy distresses you in all your gates.

Aliyah Shishi.

Deu 28:58  “If you do not guard to do all the Words of this Torah that are written in this book, to fear this esteemed and awesome Name, יהוה your Elohim,
Deu 28:59  then יהוה shall bring upon you and your descendants extraordinary plagues, great and lasting plagues, and grievous and lasting sicknesses.
Deu 28:60  “And He shall bring back on you all the diseases of Mitsrayim, of which you were afraid, and they shall cling to you,
Deu 28:61  also every sickness and every plague, which is not written in the book of this Torah, יהוה does bring upon you until you are destroyed.
Deu 28:62  “And you shall be left with few men, although you had become as numerous as the stars of the heavens, because you did not obey the voice of יהוה your Elohim.
Deu 28:63  “And it shall be, that as יהוה rejoiced over you to do you good and increase you, so יהוה does rejoice over you to destroy you and lay you waste. And you shall be plucked from off the land which you go to possess.
Deu 28:64  “And יהוה shall scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other, and there you shall serve other mighty ones, which neither you nor your fathers have known, wood and stone.
Deu 28:65  “And among those nations you are to find no rest, nor have a resting place for the sole of your foot. But there יהוה shall give you a trembling heart, and failing eyes, and sorrow of being.
Deu 28:66  “And your life shall be hanging in suspense before you, and you shall fear day and night, and not be certain of your life.
Deu 28:67  “In the morning you say, ‘Oh, that it were evening!’ And at evening you say, ‘Oh, that it were morning!’ because of the fear of your heart, with which you fear, and because of the sight which your eyes see.
Deu 28:68  “And יהוה shall bring you back to Mitsrayim in ships, by a way of which I said to you, ‘You are never to see it again.’ And there you shall be sold to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one to buy.”
Deu 29:1  These are the words of the covenant which יהוה commanded Mosheh to make with the children of Yisra’ĕl in the land of Mo’aḇ, besides the covenant which He made with them in Ḥorĕḇ.

Aliyah Sheviee.

Deu 29:2  And Mosheh called all Yisra’ĕl and said to them, “You yourselves saw all that יהוה did before your eyes in the land of Mitsrayim, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land.
Deu 29:3  “Your eyes saw the great trials, the signs, and those great wonders.
Deu 29:4  “But יהוה has not given you a heart to know and eyes to see and ears to hear, till this day.
Deu 29:5  “And I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your garments have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn out on your feet.
Deu 29:6  “You ate no bread and drank no wine nor strong drink, so that you might know that I am יהוה your Elohim.
Deu 29:7  “And when you came to this place, Siḥon sovereign of Ḥeshbon and Oḡ sovereign of Bashan came out against us to battle, and we smote them,
Deu 29:8  and took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Re’uḇĕnites, and to the Gaḏites, and to half the tribe of Menashsheh.
Deu 29:9  “Therefore you shall guard the words of this covenant, and do them, so that you prosper in all that you do.

May YHVH find us worthy to be an end time people who will return to the land via the Yarden where the 12 hidden stones in the river will be revealed and once again be used as an altar to our Elohim – Josh 4:9.

Parashat 49 Portion 144 Dev 24:1-25:19 Hosea 10:11 – 11:11 Titus 2:11-14

Hos 10:11  “And Ephrayim is a trained heifer, loving to thresh grain. But I Myself shall pass over her comely neck – I put Ephrayim to the yoke, Yehuḏah ploughs, Yaʽaqoḇ harrows for him.”

“Ephrayim loves to thresh the corn…..” she loves the blessing of eating but not so much the responsibility of ploughing. This could be a reference to taking upon ourselves the yoke of Torah. This has been evident among the so called 10 lost tribes of Yisrael (Ephrayim) and it was left to the house of Judah to carry the yoke of the Torah in ploughing and preparing the fields for sowing of YHVH’s Seed – Word – Torah.
“I put Ephrayim to the yoke..” a hiphyl or causative verb is used here and implies that YHVH will cause Ephrayim to once again take up the responsibility to wear the yoke of Torah and in so doing join Judah in preparing and producing an end time harvest – see Matt 11:28-29.

A yoke speaks of our covenant commitment to YHVH and His Torah. It can also speak of a covenant relationship between a man and a woman.

So our Torah portion begins by giving us instructions relating to divorce and forbidden remarriage. We could say this instruction implies under certain conditions YHVH will no longer be willing to renew His covenant with those who have left Him to serve other mighty ones.

Deu 24:1  “When a man takes a wife and shall marry her, then it shall be, if she finds no favour in his eyes because he has found a matter of uncoveredness in her, and he shall write her a certificate of divorce, and put it in her hand, and send her out of his house,
Deu 24:2  and if she left his house and went and became another man’s wife,
Deu 24:3  and the latter husband shall hate her and write her a certificate of divorce, and put it in her hand, and send her out of his house, or when the latter husband dies who took her to be his wife,
Deu 24:4  then her former husband who sent her away is not allowed to take her back to be his wife after she has been defiled, for that would be an abomination before יהוה. And do not bring sin on the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you as an inheritance.

Can YHVH issue a people with a certificate of divorce?

Jer 3:8  “And I saw that for all the causes for which backsliding Yisra’ĕl had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a certificate of divorce; yet  her treacherous sister Yehuḏah did not fear, but went and committed whoring too.

The reason for this divorce is a “matter of uncoveredness” “ervat davar” meaning and he finds some “matter of uncoverdness in her” – the only other place these words appear together is in Dev/Deut 23:14 speaking of the need to construct latrines since YHVH walks among Yisrael.

We are confronted with the tragic possibility that after being in a right standing with YHVH, one’s wrong choices can result in being separated from YHVH forever.

Heb 6:4  For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have become partakers of the Set-apart Spirit,
Heb 6:5  and have tasted the good Word of Elohim and the powers of the age to come,
Heb 6:6  and fall away, to renew them again to repentance – having impaled for themselves the Son of Elohim again, and put Him to open shame.1 Footnote: 1Heb. 10:26-31.

However this whole matter of marriage and divorce and falling in and out of covenant with YHVH is not always a clear cut black and white, wrong or right issue. This often calls for wisdom and discernment and often times we may not know for sure what is acceptable and what is not acceptable.

Fortunately we have some valuable guidelines in the Word.

The opening verses in our parashah are the only verses found in the Torah giving instructions about divorce and remarriage.
Other texts in the Torah refer to divorce but give no guidelines – Lev 21:,14; 22:13, Num 30:9, Deut 22:19,29.

The sad reality is that religious men have gone to one extreme or the other and have brought people into bondage concerning this issue. Suffice to say that there are many divorces that should never have taken place and some divorces that should have taken place but never did.

Tit 2:11  For the saving Gift of Elohim has appeared to all men,
Tit 2:12  instructing us to renounce wickedness and worldly lusts, and to live sensibly, righteously, and reverently in the present age,
Tit 2:13  looking for the blessed expectation and esteemed appearance of the great Elohim and our Saviour יהושע Messiah,
Tit 2:14  who gave Himself for us, to redeem us from all lawlessness1 and to cleanse for Himself a people, His own possession, ardent for good works.2 Footnotes: 1Lawlessness is a synonym for sin (1 John 3:4), Mt. 1:21, Acts 3:19 & 26, Acts 26:18, Rom. 6:1-22, Eph. 2:1-10, 1 John 3:8, Titus 3:5. 2Mt. 16:27.

Most important for understanding our Torah text concerning divorce and remarriage is the words that Yahshua spoke on this issue.

Mat 19:7  They said to Him, “Why then did Mosheh command to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?”
Mat 19:8  He said to them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts, Mosheh allowed you to put away your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.
Mat 19:9  “And I say to you, whoever puts away his wife, except on the ground of whoring, and marries another, commits adultery.1 And whoever marries her who has been put away commits adultery.”1 Footnote:1See footnote 5:32.

This was a direct response of Yahshua to our Torah portion text.

Mat 19:2  And large crowds followed Him, and He healed them there.
Mat 19:3  And the Pharisees came to Him, trying Him, and saying to Him, “Is it right for a man to put away his wife for every reason?”
Mat 19:4  And He answering, said to them, “Did you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female,
Mat 19:5  and said, ‘For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?
Mat 19:6  “So that they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore, what Elohim has joined together, let man not separate.”

Shaul gives us some valuable insight into this matter as well.

1Co 7:8  And I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they remain even as I am,
1Co 7:9  but if they do not have self-control, let them marry, for it is better to marry than to burn.
1Co 7:10  And to the married I command, not I, but the Master: A wife should not separate from a husband.
1Co 7:11  But if she is indeed separated, let her remain unmarried or be restored to favour with her husband, and let a husband not send away a wife.
1Co 7:12  And to the rest I say, not the Master: If any brother has an unbelieving wife, and she thinks well to live with him, let him not send her away.
1Co 7:13  And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he thinks well to live with her, let her not send him away.
1Co 7:14  For the unbelieving husband has been set-apart in the wife, and the unbelieving wife has been set-apart in the husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are set-apart.
1Co 7:15  And, if the unbelieving one separates, let him separate himself. A brother or a sister has not been enslaved in such matters. But Elohim has called us to peace.
1Co 7:16  For how do you know, O wife, whether you shall save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you shall save your wife?
1Co 7:17  Only, as Elohim has distributed to each one, as the Master has called each one, so let him walk. And so I order in all the assemblies.
