Parashat 4 Portion 19 Ber/Gen 22:1-24 Yesh/Is 33:7-22 Matt 27:27-66

Gen 22:1  And it came to be after these events that Elohim tried Aḇraham, and said to him, “Aḇraham!” And he said,

“Here I am.”
Gen 22:2  And He said, “Take your son, now, your only son Yitsḥaq, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriyah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains which I command you.”
Gen 22:3  And Aḇraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Yitsḥaq his son. And he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place which Elohim had commanded him.
Gen 22:4  And on the third day Aḇraham lifted his eyes and saw the place from a distance.
Gen 22:5  So Aḇraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey while the boy and I go over there and worship, and come back to you.”
Gen 22:6  And Aḇraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Yitsḥaq his son. And he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together.
Gen 22:7  And Yitsḥaq spoke to Aḇraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “See, the fire and the wood! But where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”
Gen 22:8  And Aḇraham said, “My son, Elohim does provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” And the two of them went together.
Gen 22:9  And they came to the place which Elohim had commanded him, and Aḇraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order. And he bound Yitsḥaq his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.
Gen 22:10  And Aḇraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son,
Gen 22:11  but the Messenger of יהוה called to him from the heavens and said, “Aḇraham, Aḇraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
Gen 22:12  And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy, nor touch him. For now I know that you fear Elohim, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
Gen 22:13  And Aḇraham lifted his eyes and looked and saw behind him a ram caught in a bush by its horns, and Aḇraham went and took the ram and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
Gen 22:14  And Aḇraham called the name of the place, ‘יהוה Yireh,’
as it is said to this day, “On the mountain יהוה provides.”
Gen 22:15  And the Messenger of יהוה called to Aḇraham a second time from the heavens,
Gen 22:16  and said, “By Myself I have sworn, declares יהוה, because you have done this, and have not withheld your son, your only son,
Gen 22:17  that I shall certainly bless you, and I shall certainly increase your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore, and let your seed possess the gate of their enemies.
Gen 22:18  “And in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
Gen 22:19  Then Aḇraham returned to his young men, and they rose up and went together to Be’ĕrsheḇa. And Aḇraham dwelt at Be’ĕrsheḇa.
Gen 22:20  And it came to be after these events that it was reported to Aḇraham, saying, “See, Milkah too has borne children to your brother Naḥor:
Gen 22:21  “Uts his first-born, and Buz his brother, and Qemu’ĕl the father of Aram,
Gen 22:22  and Keseḏ, and Ḥazo, and Pildash, and Yiḏlaph, and Bethu’ĕl.”
Gen 22:23  And Bethu’ĕl brought forth Riḇqah. These eight Milkah bore to Naḥor, Aḇraham’s brother.
Gen 22:24  And his concubine, whose name was Re’uwmah, also bore Teḇaḥ, and Gaḥam, and Taḥash, and Maʽaḵah.

The events surrounding this parashah from the Book of Yasher:

Chp 22:41 And when Isaac was thirty-seven years old, Ishmael his brother was going about with him in the tent.
42 And Ishmael boasted of himself to Isaac, saying, I was thirteen years old when YHVH spoke to my father to circumcise us, and I did according to the word of YHVH which he spoke to my father, and I gave my soul unto YHVH, and I did not transgress his word which he commanded my father.
43 And Isaac answered Ishmael, saying, Why dost thou boast to me about this, about a little bit of thy flesh which thou didst take from thy body, concerning which YHVH commanded thee?
44 As YHVH liveth, the Elohim of my father Abraham, if YHVH should say unto my father, Take now thy son Isaac and bring him up an offering before me, I would not refrain but I would joyfully accede to it.
CHAPTER 23
1 At that time the word of YHVH came to Abraham, and he said unto him, Abraham, and he said, Here I am.
2 And he said to him, Take now thy son, thine only son whom thou lovest, even Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which shall be shown to thee, for there wilt thou see a cloud and the esteem of YHVH.
3 And Abraham said within himself, How shall I separate my son Isaac from Sarah his mother, in order to bring him up for a burnt offering before YHVH?
4 And Abraham came into the tent, and he sat before Sarah his wife, and he spoke these words to her,
5 My son Isaac is grown up and he has not for some time studied the service of his Elohim, now tomorrow I will go and bring him to Shem, and Eber his son, and there he will learn the ways of YHVH, for they will teach him to know YHVH as well as to know that when he prayeth continually before YHVH, he will answer him, therefore there he will know the way of serving YHVH his Elohim.
6 And Sarah said, Thou hast spoken well, go my husband and do unto him as thou hast said, but remove him not at a great distance from me, neither let him remain there too long, for my soul is bound within his soul.
8 And Sarah took her son Isaac and he abode all that night with her, and she kissed and embraced him, and gave him instructions till morning.
9 And she said to him, O my son, how can my soul separate itself from thee? And she still kissed him and embraced him, and she gave Abraham instructions concerning him.
10 And Sarah said to Abraham, O my husband, I pray thee take heed of thy son, and place thine eyes over him, for I have no other son nor daughter but him.
11 O forsake him not. If he be hungry give him bread, and if he be thirsty give him water to drink; do not let him go on foot, neither let him sit in the sun.
12 Neither let him go by himself in the road, neither force him from whatever he may desire, but do unto him as he may say to thee.
13 And Sarah wept bitterly the whole night on account of Isaac, and she gave him instructions till morning.
14 And in the morning Sarah selected a very fine and beautiful garment from those garments which she had in the house, that Abimelech had given to her.
25 And whilst Abraham was proceeding with his son Isaac along the road, Satan came and appeared to Abraham in the figure of a very aged man, humble and of contrite spirit, and he approached Abraham and said to him, Art thou silly or brutish, that thou goest to do this thing this day to thine only son?
26 For YHVH gave thee a son in thy latter days, in thy old age, and wilt thou go and slaughter him this day because he committed no violence, and wilt thou cause the soul of thine only son to perish from the earth?
27 Dost thou not know and understand that this thing cannot be from YHVH? for YHVH cannot do unto man such evil upon earth to say to him, Go slaughter thy child.
28 And Abraham heard this and knew that it was the word of Satan who endeavored to draw him aside from the way of YHVH, but Abraham would not hearken to the voice of Satan, and Abraham rebuked him so that he went away.
58 And Abraham approached to build the altar in that place, and Abraham was weeping, and Isaac took stones and mortar until they had finished building the altar.
59 And Abraham took the wood and placed it in order upon the altar which he had built.
60 And he took his son Isaac and bound him in order to place him upon the wood which was upon the altar, to slay him for a burnt offering before the Lord.
61 And Isaac said to his father, Bind me securely and then place me upon the altar lest I should turn and move, and break loose from the force of the knife upon my flesh and thereof profane the burnt offering; and Abraham did so.
62 And Isaac still said to his father, O my father, when thou shalt have slain me and burnt me for an offering, take with thee that which shall remain of my ashes to bring to Sarah my mother, and say to her, This is the sweet smelling savor of Isaac; but do not tell her this if she should sit near a well or upon any high place, lest she should cast her soul after me and die.
69 At that time YHVH appeared unto Abraham, and called to him, from heaven, and said unto him, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him, for now I know that thou fearest YHVH in performing this act, and in not withholding thy son, thine only son, from me.
70 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, a ram was caught in a thicket by his horns; that was the ram which YHVH had created in the earth in the day that he made earth and heaven.
71 For YHVH had prepared this ram from that day, to be a burnt offering instead of Isaac.
76 And Satan went to Sarah, and he appeared to her in the figure of an old man very humble and meek, and Abraham was yet engaged in the burnt offering before YHVH.
77 And he said unto her, Dost thou not know all the work that Abraham has made with thine only son this day? for he took Isaac and built an altar, and killed him, and brought him up as a sacrifice upon the altar, and Isaac cried and wept before his father, but he looked not at him, neither did he have compassion over him.

83 And Sarah laid her head upon the bosom of one of her handmaids, and she became as still as a stone.
84 She afterward rose up and went about making inquiries till she came to Hebron, and she inquired of all those whom she met walking in the road, and no one could tell her what had happened to her son.
86 And behold, Satan came to Sarah in the shape of an old man, and he came and stood before her, and he said unto her, I spoke falsely unto thee, for Abraham did not kill his son and he is not dead; and when she heard the word her joy was so exceedingly violent on account of her son, that her soul went out through joy; she died and was gathered to her people.
87 And when Abraham had finished his service he returned with his son Isaac to his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba, and they came home.
88 And Abraham sought for Sarah, and could not find her, and he made inquiries concerning her, and they said unto him, She went as far as Hebron to seek you both where you had gone, for thus was she informed.
89 And Abraham and Isaac went to her to Hebron, and when they found that she was dead they lifted up their voices and wept bitterly over her; and Isaac fell upon his mother's face and wept over her, and he said, O my mother, my mother, how hast thou left me, and where hast thou gone? O how, how hast thou left me!
90 And Abraham and Isaac wept greatly and all their servants wept with them on account of Sarah, and they mourned over her a great and heavy mourning.
CHAPTER 24:1 And the life of Sarah was one hundred and twenty-seven years, and Sarah died; and Abraham rose up from before his dead to seek a burial place to bury his wife Sarah; and he went and spoke to the children of Heth, the inhabitants of the land, saying,  I am a stranger and a sojourner with you in your land; give me a possession of a burial place in your land, that I may bury my dead from before me. End quote.

Midrash: The title of this parasha “ the Ekeidah” or “the binding” prophetically points to those who like Yitzchak willingly allowed himself to be bound and offered as an offering. This reminds us too of Messiah who also willingly allowed himself to be bound (nailed) to an execution stake.
This is the testimony of every truly born again person. They testify of a time when they too willingly allowed themselves to be bound to the will and purpose and life of Yahshua. This can only happen when YHVH our Heavenly Father revealed to us our lost state and the path of death and destruction we were following.
Joh 6:44  “No one is able to come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him. And I shall raise him up in the last day.

This “binding” to Yahshua means we identify with his death and his resurrection. When this realization first comes to us by the Ruach Ha Kodesh (Spirit of YHVH) it deeply grieves and saddens us that YHVH had to take such drastic measures to save us. We realize it required the death of YHVH’s only brought forth Son to bring us to our senses. We begin to realize that it took a death of someone very precious to rescue us from a life of death.
Yahshua not only rescued us from this life of death, he showed us a way back to His Father, where he currently resides. YHVH showed us that once we had been “bound” to Yahshua and rescued from our life of death, the Torah would become our road map back into His presence in the age to come.  Most Christians believe that Yahshua and Yahshua alone is the road map back into the presence of YHVH. Yahshua came to demonstrate that the true evidence of our salvation was the obedience to YHVH’s commandments.

1Jn 5:1  Everyone who believes that יהושע is the Messiah has been born of Elohim, and everyone who loves the One bringing forth also loves the one having been born of Him.

1Jn 5:2  By this we know that we love the children of Elohim, when we love Elohim and guard His commands.
1Jn 5:3  For this is the love for Elohim, that we guard His commands,1 and His commands are not heavy, Footnote: 1See 5:2, 2 John v. 6, John 14:15.

Many of our dear brothers and sisters in the Church proclaim and cling to only one part of YHVH’s Truth. Every Word that YHVH has spoken through His Ruach Ha Kodesh is Truth and every Word YHVH has spoken has forever been settled and established in the heavens and on earth. Many have acted foolishly in selecting for themselves what is truth and what is not truth.
Psa 119:89  Forever, O יהוה, Your word stands firm in the heavens.

Mat 5:17  “Do not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets.1 I did not come to destroy but to complete. Footnote: 1The Law and the Prophets is a term used for the pre-Messianic Scriptures. Mat 5:18  “For truly, I say to you, till the heaven and the earth pass away, one jot or one tittle shall by no means pass from the Torah till all be done.1 Footnote: 1Lk. 16:17. Mat 5:19  “Whoever, then, breaks one of the least of these commands, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the reign of the heavens; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the reign of the heavens.

Act 20:27  “For I kept not back from declaring to you all the counsel of Elohim.
Act 20:28  “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Set-apart Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the assembly of Elohim which He has purchased with His own blood.
Act 20:29  “For I know this, that after my departure savage

Act 20:30  “Also from among yourselves men shall arise, speaking distorted teachings, to draw away the taught ones after themselves.

2 Cor 11:3  But I am afraid, lest, as the serpent deceived Ḥawwah by his trickery, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Messiah. 2Co 11:4  For, indeed, if he who is coming proclaims another יהושע,1 whom we have not proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit which you have not received, or a different Good News which you have not accepted, you put up with it well enough! Footnote: 1Mt. 24:5 & 23-24, John 5:43.
The only way we can walk the walk and talk the talk is by following in the footsteps of Yahshua.

Parashat 4 Portion 18 Ber 21:1-14 1Samuel 2:21-28 Matt 1:18-25

Gen 21:1  And יהוה visited Sarah as He had said, and יהוה did for Sarah as He had spoken.
Gen 21:2  So Sarah conceived and bore Aḇraham a son in his old age, at the appointed time of which Elohim had spoken to him.
Gen 21:3  And Aḇraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Yitsḥaq.
Gen 21:4  And Aḇraham circumcised his son Yitsḥaq when he was eight days old, as Elohim had commanded him.

Note the amazing similarities of the birth of these two miracle children.

Luk 1:26  And in the sixth month(of Elizabeth's pregnancy) the messenger Gaḇri’ĕl was sent by Elohim to a city of Galil named Natsareth,
Luk 1:27  to a maiden engaged to a man whose name was Yosĕph, of the house of Dawiḏ. And the maiden’s name was Miryam.
Luk 1:28  And the messenger, coming to her, said, “Greetings, favoured one, the Master is with you. Blessed are you among women!”
Luk 1:29  But she was greatly disturbed at his word, and wondered what kind of greeting this was.
Luk 1:30  And the messenger said to her, “Do not be afraid, Miryam, for you have found favour with Elohim.
Luk 1:31  “And see, you shall conceive in your womb, and shall give birth to a Son, and call His Name יהושע.1 Footnote: 1Mt. 1:21.
Luk 1:32  “He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High. And יהוה Elohim shall give Him the throne of His father Dawiḏ.
Luk 1:33  “And He shall reign over the house of Yaʽaqoḇ forever, and there shall be no end to His reign.”1 Footnote: 1Verses 32 and 33 confirm the prophecies Ps. 2, Ps. 89:14-34, Isa. 9:7, Isa. 16:5, Jer. 23:3-6, Jer. 30:9, Ezek. 37:24, Dan. 2:44, Dan. 7:18-27, Mic. 5:2-4, Acts 1:6-7, Rev. 11:15.
Luk 1:34  And Miryam said to the messenger, “How shall this be, since I do not know a man?”
Luk 1:35  And the messenger answering, said to her, “The Set-apart Spirit shall come upon you, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow you. And for that reason the Set-apart One born of you shall be called: Son of Elohim.
Luk 1:36  “And see, Elisheḇa your relative, she has also conceived a son in her old age. And this is now the sixth month to her who was called barren,
Luk 1:37  because with Elohim no matter shall be impossible.”
Luk 1:38  And Miryam said, “See the female servant of יהוה! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the messenger went away from her.

Scriptural Dates for Messiah's Conception and Birth

The Conception of Yochanan the Immerser/ Luke 1:5-25
When the messenger, Gabriel, appeared to Zacharias as he was ministering in the Temple, it was during the ministration of Abiyah (also spelled Abia or Abijah). This order of priests ministered in the Temple the eighth week of the Hebrew year according to the ordinance of 1 Chronicles 24:10 (and according to the Talmud).  The eighth week transverses the last week of the Second Hebrew month (also called Iyar since Babylonian captivity) and the first week of the Third Hebrew month (also called Sivan since Babylonian captivity), which culminates at Shavuot (called Pentecoste in Greek). This is the anchor point for discovering the exact time of Messiah's birth. The messenger promised Zacharias that his prayer had been answered, and when he went home to his wife Elizabeth she conceived, it seems almost immediately. This puts the conception of Yochanan the Immerser very near the time of the Feast of  Shavuot, in the second week of theThird Hebrew month (Sivan).

II. The Conception of Yahshua / Luke 1:26-55
Then, after the sixth month of Elizabeth' s pregnancy the messenger Gabriel appeared to Mary. Gabriel told Mary about Elizabeth, saying "she who was called barren is six months pregnant," This would be the last of the ninth Hebrew month called Kislev at the time of Chanukah. There are 27 weeks between the end of discourse of Abiyah (Abia or Abijah in translations) and the start of the feast of Chanukah (meaning Dedication), which is celebrated eight days, from Kislev 25 to Tevet 2.
Miryam accepts the word of the messenger concerning the conception of Messiah in her, and she immediately rushes from Nazareth to the home of Elizabeth and Zacharias in the Judean mountains close to Jerusalem, about a three days journey from Nazareth. Mary was probably going there to celebrate Chanukah and to help Elishevah (Elizabeth) with her pregnancy, as well as to talk to Elishevah about the messenger's visitation.
Upon Miryam's greeting to Elishevah, Elishevah responds to Miryam, calling her "the mother of my Master". This demonstrates that Miryam was already pregnant with Yahshua. Thus, Yahshua was conceived at the time of Chanukah, the time where a miracle took place and also the time when Yahshua years later was speaking during Chanukah(Yoch 10:22) about the miracles that He was doing in His Father’s Name that bears witness of Him. (Yoch 10:25  יהושע answered them, “I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father’s Name, they bear witness concerning Me.)

Sometimes the time of Chanukah (which starts on the 25th of the Ninth Hebrew month) falls close to Christmas which is in the Gregorian 12th month and corresponds with the Ninth Hebrew month. The apostate Roman church of medieval times combined the pagan winter solstice in late December with the 25th of Kislev (Chanukah) to create Christmas (Christ's Mass) on December 25. Supposedly, this was to celebrate Yahshua's birth (which was of course not at all during this time- Yahshua was only yet conceived during this Ninth Herbew month) but actually this whole mixture of Christ’s Mass is a mixture of celebration of the pagan deities trying to mix in the Constantinian Christianity Greek Jesus too.
Yahshua is shown celebrating Chanukah in John 10:22,23. It is at this celebration that He declares "I and My Father are One" [John 10:30], which testifies to His Divine origin in His conception. It also reinforces Chanukah as the time of His conception.

Historically, then, it is more accurate to celebrate Yahshua entering the world through conception at Chanukah rather than to be part of an abomination that celebrate His birth at Christmas. As we shall show, Christmas is not the birthday of Yahshua. (In fact, Christmas is an invention resulting from religious compromise with pagan tradition.)

IlI.The Birth of Yochanan the Immerser (John the Baptist)/Luke1:56-80
Miryam (Mary) stayed with Elishevah (Elizabeth) for three months, which was until the birth of Yochanan the Immerser. Since a full pregnancy term is 41 weeks, and 27 weeks makes up the first six months (two trimesters), which is exactly the time from the discourse of Abiyah (Abia or Abijah) to Chanukah, that leaves 14 weeks to accomplish the last trimester and bring the pregnancy to full term. There are exactly 14 weeks from Chanukah to Passover (Nisan 14-22). Therefore, Yochanan the Immerser was born at Pesach/Passover. He was circumcised on the eighth day, which would be the last day of the Pesach week/Feast of Unleavened Bread. Gabriel had said that Yochanan would "go forth" in the strength and power of Eliyahu [Luke 1:17]. Jewish teaching was that Eliyahu would come again at Passover (this is still a tradition of Judaism today).

IV.The Birth of Yahshua/Luke 2
In the First Hebrew Month of Aviv (also called Nisan since Babylonian exile), when Yochanan the Immerser was born, is the first month of the Hebrew year. As we have shown, Miryam conceived six months after Elishevah conceived, which means Yahshua's birth would have to come six months after Yochanan's birth, during the seventh Hebrew month Ethanim (also called Tishri since Babylonian Exile). Since we know that Yochanan was born at Passover/Feast of Unleavened Bread, we learn the time of Yahshua's birth by counting six Hebrew months from Passover. This comes to the time of Yom Teruah. Some believe it may also have been during Sukkot. (Yom Teruah is on the first day of the Seventh Month and Sukkot is 15 days later. Both have significance symbolic meanings that make sense for the fact that Yahshua could have been born on one of these Feast days. )
 End quote.

Gen 21:5  And Aḇraham was one hundred years old when his son Yitsḥaq was born to him.
Gen 21:6  And Sarah said, “Elohim has made me laugh, and everyone who hears of it laughs with me.”
Gen 21:7  And she said, “Who would have said to Aḇraham that Sarah would nurse children? For I have borne him a son in his old age.”
Gen 21:8  And the child grew and was weaned, and Aḇraham made a great feast on the day that Yitsḥaq was weaned.

It is known according to the Talmud that “a mother is considered a “meineket,” or nursing mother, until her child reaches 24 months. Even if a baby has weaned, he or she can return to nurse at any time until the age of two. Between the ages of two and four years, or five if the baby is unhealthy, a child who has weaned for longer than 72 hours may not return to the breast, and age five is considered the upper limit for nursing in Jewish law.” Our modern day western culture of both parents working has put an end to long periods of breast feeding. Some experts believe that children suffer possible psychological harm if breast feeding is stopped too soon or a child is never breast fed.

It was therefore a significant event when the baby was weaned from mommy’s milk. When this event occurred it was accompanied by a great celebration. (Please note there were no birthday parties then, only coming of age of maturity parties- years since birth were counted though.) The  Hebrew word for weaned is “gamal” the same word used for “mature”. It is interesting that this same Hebrew word also means “camel” -  these animals were known to store great amounts of water so that they could travel far distances without been nourished along the way. This teaches us that our spiritual journey here on earth is a long journey that requires the maturity of endurance.

Gen 21:9  And Sarah saw the son of Haḡar the Mitsrite, whom she had borne to Aḇraham, mocking.
Gen 21:10  So she said to Aḇraham, “Drive out this female servant and her son, for the son of this female servant shall not inherit with my son, with Yitsḥaq.”

The word “mocking” in Hebrew is “metzachek” and appears as a “piel participle” verb. The basic “pa al” form of the verb is “tzchak” means “to laugh” The “Piel” or more intense verb form means “to mock” or treat with contempt. This is what Yishmael was doing to Yitzchak. This continues to this day. It continues amongst many so called believers in Yahshua. It continues when we refuse to acknowledge the Hebrew context and all its implications on Yahshua. We do this by refusing to follow his example of keeping Sabbath, studying and teaching the Torah and most of all leading those whom his Father has given him to enjoy the same kind of relationship with the Father that he enjoys.

Gen 21:11  And the matter was very evil in the eyes of Aḇraham because of his son.
Gen 21:12  But Elohim said to Aḇraham, “Let it not be evil in your eyes because of the boy and because of your female servant. Whatever Sarah has said to you, listen to her voice, for in Yitsḥaq your seed is called.
Gen 21:13  “And of the son of the female servant I also make a nation, because he is your seed.”
Gen 21:14  And Aḇraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, which he gave to Haḡar, putting it on her shoulder, also the boy, and sent her away. And she left and wandered in the Wilderness of Be’ĕrsheḇa.
Gen 21:15  And the water in the skin was used up, and she placed the boy under one of the shrubs.
Gen 21:16  And she went and sat down about a bowshot away, for she said, “Let me not see the death of the boy.” And she sat opposite him, and lifted her voice and wept.
Gen 21:17  And Elohim heard the voice of the boy, and the messenger of Elohim called to Haḡar from the heavens, and said to her, “What is the matter with you, Haḡar? Do not fear, for Elohim has heard the voice of the boy where he is.
Gen 21:18  “Arise, lift up the boy and hold him with your hand, for I make a great nation of him.”
Gen 21:19  And Elohim opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she went and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink.
Gen 21:20  And Elohim was with the boy, and he grew and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.
Gen 21:21  And he dwelt in the Wilderness of Paran, (near present day Mecca)and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Mitsrayim.

Avraham would not have chosen a wife for his son from Mitzraim/Egypt.

Verses 11-21 present a challenge to the mind of believers, especially modern day believers – See Rom 9. The Church has grappled with this problem and formulated the doctrine of Election.
How does one really understand this dilemma?

Whether we like or not we must face this issue. Listen to the words of Shaul on this matter:

1Co 11:16  If, however, anyone seems to be contentious, we do not have such a habit, nor do the assemblies of Elohim.
1Co 11:17  And in declaring this I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse.
1Co 11:18  For in the first place, I hear that when you come together as an assembly, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it.
1Co 11:19  For there have to be factions even among you, so that the approved ones might be revealed among you.

When YHVH chooses someone, that someone will inevitably find themselves at odds with the established ideas of the majority of religious people around them.
This can also be dangerous because this is how dangerous religious sects have often formed as a result of “breaking away” from the “establishment.”

For believers in the true Torah teaching Messiah who have themselves at odds with the established churches, must ask themselves what are the characteristics of a dangerous religious sect?
Church organizations have provided many helpful guidelines in this regard. However many of these guidelines are more descriptive of their own organizations that display the same signs of being sectarian and extremely dangerous for genuine truth seeking believers.

Here follows a list from a well know church organization.

A dangerous religious sect will do the following:

1. Opposing critical thinking
2. Isolating members and penalizing them for leaving
3. Emphasizing special doctrines outside scripture
4. Seeking inappropriate loyalty to their leaders
5. Dishonoring the family unit
6. Crossing Biblical boundaries of behavior (versus sexual purity and personal ownership)
7. Separation from the Church

Let us midrash on these issues.

Parashat 4 Portion 17 Ber/Gen 20:1-18 Yesh/Is 61:1-10 Gal 3:15-29

We remind ourselves once again that one of the important ways YHVH has chosen to reveal His counsel  to us is through the weekly Torah portions. This has been the practice of our Hebrew brothers for millennia.

Heb 1:1  Elohim, having of old spoken in many portions and many ways to the fathers by the prophets,
Heb 1:2  has in these last days spoken to us by the Son, whom He has appointed heir of all, through whom also He made the ages,1 Footnote: 1John 1:3.

The words “many portions” is the Greek word “polumeros” Strongs G4181. This is the only time this word is used in this form in the second writings (New Testament). Was the author aware of the weekly Torah portions as he wrote this letter to a weary Messianic Jewish community that were facing persecution and exclusion from the early Jewish community? I believe he was.

Even the Hebrew version of this verse uses the Hebrew word “mkadem” which implies that YHVH has spoken “in measured ways”

Heb 1:1  האלהים אשר־דבר מקדם פעמים רבות ובפנים שנים אל־אבתינו ביד

We are reminded that Yahshua did not come to change the ancient paths of our forefather’s, he came to give full meaning and understanding to the ancient paths they walked, so that we could follow in their footsteps.

Our Torah Portion:

Gen 20:1  And Aḇraham set out from there to the land of the South, and dwelt between Qaḏĕsh and Shur, and stayed in Gerar.

There is possibly a subtle hint of Avraham’s situation in the meaning of the place names mentioned in the opening verse.

The Hebrew word here for “south” is “Negev.” The Negev is a desert. We assume Avraham found himself in a wilderness situation. He was confronted with a life and death situation. “Qadesh” means “set apart” and “Shur” means “wall.”  We could say Avraham found himself between a rock and a hard place. Sometimes it feels impossible to do the right thing. What is the right thing? To do what is “set apart” no matter what the consequences, even if it alienates you from all your friends and you find yourself all alone. The Hebrew says “vayagar biyagar” means “he dwelt in Gerar”. The Hebrew word “ger” can also means “stranger.”

Gen 20:2  And Aḇraham said concerning Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Aḇimeleḵ sovereign of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

How can we compare the events of this parasha to a modern day context?
Let us attempt to compare “apples with apples” imagine you are working for a boss who has a playboy reputation. He is known to keep several women in his mansion for his pleasure. Your boss informs you that he is about to retrench many of his employees. To save yourself from retrenchment you send your wife to live with him in his mansion to be used for his sexual pleasure. You know this will save your job because you have seen your boss take a keen interest in your wife. To make matters worse your wife is pregnant with your miracle son you have been waiting for, for many years.
This action is utterly despicable. Yet Avraham is called the father of our faith and a friend of YHVH forever – 2 Chron 20:7.
We are strongly reminded here once again that the covenant we have with YHVH does not depend on our faithfulness but on His faithfulness.

This is the second time Abraham commits the same sin. The first time we see in Ber/Gen 12 Abraham lies to Pharaoh about his wife and now he repeats the same lie to Abimelek. What makes this lie even more despicable is that Sarah is possibly now pregnant with the promised son – Yitzchak.
Herein lies a very important spiritual lesson. We have been taught that our faithfulness brings YHVH’s favour into our lives. So we really try to be as faithful as we can. Yet in spite of our faithfulness things don’t always work out the way we would like. This Torah portion teaches us that it is not so much our faithfulness that causes YHVH to act on our behalf. It is YHVH’s favour that causes us to become faithful. In other words we are not able to be who we were meant to be unless YHVH empowers us to be who we were meant to be. Sadly we have all been caught in the trap that says – it is our effort that makes the difference, when in fact it is YHVH who is working in us in order to make the effort that makes the difference.

Php 2:12  So that, my beloved, as you always obeyed – not only in my presence, but now much rather in my absence – work out your own deliverance with fear and trembling,
Php 2:13  for it is Elohim who is working in you1 both to desire and to work for His good pleasure.

“Soteria” Greek word for salvation can also means to rescue and keep safe it can be understood as temporal or eternal salvation and it involves our active participation. The Greek word “katergazesthe” means “making effective” for “work out” is a combination of two words which imply an action that is done to us that produces an effect – the verb used is a passive verb. Through our obedience with fear and trembling YHVH makes His deliverance effective in us. Even the obedience with fear and trembling we experience is His working (operating in us).
Gen 20:3  But Elohim came to Aḇimeleḵ in a dream by night, and said to him, “See, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.”

“Hineh met” lit means “behold you are dead” as it appears in the past tense. This implies that you are as good as dead. To survive he would need a”resurrection from the dead” kind of miracle. It is this realization that causes the king to take such drastic measures in making restitution for his action. The irony of this event is that it appears that Abimelech seems to have more fear and trembling for YHVH than Avraham.

Gen 20:4  However, Aḇimeleḵ had not come near her, and he said, “יהוה, would You slay a righteous nation also?
Gen 20:5  “Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she, even she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and in the innocence of my hands I have done this.”
Gen 20:6  And Elohim said to him in a dream, “Yea, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart, and so I kept you from sinning against Me. For this reason I did not let you touch her.
Gen 20:7  “And now, return the man’s wife, for he is a prophet, and let him pray for you and you live. But if you do not return her, know that you shall certainly die, you and all that are yours.”

This is the first time mention is made of a prophet. According to the law of first mention a foundational understanding is given of what kind of person a true prophet is.

Gen 20:8  So Aḇimeleḵ rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and spoke all these words in their hearing. And the men were greatly frightened.
Gen 20:9  And Aḇimeleḵ called Aḇraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? In what have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and on my reign a great sin? You have done matters to me that should not be done.”
Gen 20:10  And Aḇimeleḵ said to Aḇraham, “What did you have in view, that you have done this matter?”
Gen 20:11  And Aḇraham said, “Only because I said to myself, the fear of Elohim is not in this place, and they shall kill me for the sake of my wife.
Gen 20:12  “And yet, she is truly my sister. She is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she became my wife.
Gen 20:13  “And it came to be, when Elohim caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is your kindness that you should do for me: in every place, wherever we go, say of me, “He is my brother.” ’ ”
Gen 20:14  Then Aḇimeleḵ took sheep, and cattle, and male and female servants, and gave them to Aḇraham. And he returned Sarah his wife to him.
Gen 20:15  And Aḇimeleḵ said, “See, my land is before you, dwell wherever it is good in your eyes.”
Gen 20:16  And to Sarah he said, “See, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. See, it is to you a covering of eyes before all who are with you and before all others, and you are cleared before everyone.”
Gen 20:17  And Aḇraham prayed to Elohim, and Elohim healed Aḇimeleḵ, and his wife, and his female servants, so they bore children,
Gen 20:18  for יהוה had closed up all the wombs of the house of Aḇimeleḵ because of Sarah, Aḇraham’s wife.

Midrash: – how do we deal with the failure that comes from making the wrong kind of decisions in life?
The same way Avraham did. Avraham saw the day of Yahshua and was glad.

Joh 8:42  יהושע said to them, “If Elohim were your Father, you would love Me, for I came forth from Elohim, and am here. For I have not come of Myself, but He sent Me.
Joh 8:43  “Why do you not know what I say? Because you are unable to hear My Word.
Joh 8:44  “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you wish to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and has not stood in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks the lie, he speaks of his own, for he is a liar and the father of it.
Joh 8:45  “And because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me.
Joh 8:46  “Who of you proves Me wrong concerning sin? And if I speak the truth, why do you not believe Me?
Joh 8:47  “He who is of Elohim hears the Words of Elohim, therefore you do not hear because you are not of Elohim.”
Joh 8:48  The Yehuḏim answered and said to Him, “Do we not say well that You are a Shomeronite and have a demon?”
Joh 8:49  יהושע answered, “I do not have a demon, but I value My Father, and you do not value Me.
Joh 8:50  “And I do not seek My own esteem, there is One who is seeking and is judging.
Joh 8:51  “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone guards My Word he shall never see death at all.”
Joh 8:52  The Yehuḏim said to Him, “Now we know that You have a demon! Aḇraham died, and the prophets. And You say, ‘If anyone guards My Word he shall never taste death at all.’
Joh 8:53  “Are You greater than our father Aḇraham, who died? And the prophets died. Whom do You make Yourself?”
Joh 8:54  יהושע answered, “If I esteem Myself, My esteem is none at all. It is My Father who esteems Me, of whom you say that He is your Elohim.
Joh 8:55  “And you have not known Him, but I know Him. And if I say, ‘I do not know Him,’ I shall be like you, a liar. But I do know Him and I guard His Word.1 Footnote: 1See also 15:10.
Joh 8:56  “Your father Aḇraham was glad that he should see My day, and he saw it and did rejoice.”
Joh 8:57  The Yehuḏim, therefore, said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Aḇraham?”
Joh 8:58  יהושע said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Aḇraham came to be, I am.”Gk – I exist. We believe Yahshua always existed in bosom of the Father.
Joh 8:59  Therefore they picked up stones to throw at Him, but יהושע was hidden and went out of the Set-apart Place, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

In spite of massive personal failure, Avraham looked forward to the day when Yahshua would set all things straight and make a way for us to be right with his Father.
Avraham knew the Son because he knew the Father.

Joh 6:28  So they said to Him, “What should we do to work the works of Elohim?”
Joh 6:29  יהושע answered and said to them, “This is the work of Elohim, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
Joh 6:30  So they said to Him, “What sign then would You do, so that we see and believe You? What would You do?
Joh 6:31  “Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, as it has been written, ‘He gave them bread out of the heaven to eat.’ ”
Joh 6:32  Therefore יהושע said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, Mosheh did not give you the bread out of the heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread out of the heaven.
Joh 6:33  “For the bread of Elohim is He who comes down out of the heaven and gives life to the world.”
Joh 6:34  So they said to Him, “Master, give us this bread always.”
Joh 6:35  And יהושע said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall not get hungry at all, and he who believes in Me shall not get thirsty at all.
Joh 6:36  “But I said to you that you have seen Me, and still do not believe.
Joh 6:37  “All that the Father gives Me shall come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I shall by no means cast out.
Joh 6:38  “Because I have come down out of the heaven, not to do My own desire, but the desire of Him who sent Me.
Joh 6:39  “This is the desire of the Father who sent Me, that all He has given Me I should not lose of it, but should raise it in the last day.
Joh 6:40  “And this is the desire of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him should possess everlasting life. And I shall raise him up in the last day.”
Joh 6:44  “No one is able to come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him. And I shall raise him up in the last day.
Joh 6:45  “It has been written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by יהוה.’ Everyone, then, who has heard from the Father, and learned, comes to Me.
Joh 6:46  “Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from Elohim – He has seen the Father.
Joh 6:53  יהושע therefore said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Aḏam and drink His blood, you possess no life in yourselves.
Joh 6:54  “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood possesses everlasting life, and I shall raise him up in the last day.
Joh 6:55  “For My flesh is truly food, and My blood is truly drink.
Joh 6:56  “He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood stays in Me, and I in him.
Joh 6:57  “As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me shall live because of Me.
Joh 6:58  “This is the bread which came down out of the heaven, not as your fathers ate the manna and died. He who eats this bread shall live forever.”
Joh 6:64  “But there are some of you who do not believe.” For יהושע knew from the beginning who they were who did not believe, and who would deliver Him up.
Joh 6:65  And He said, “Because of this I have said to you that no one is able to come to Me unless it has been given to him by My Father.”
Joh 6:66  From then on many of His taught ones withdrew and were not walking with Him any more.

Avraham saw this day and rejoiced.
