Parashat 51 Nitzavim “You are standing”

Dev/Deut 29:10(9) – 30:20

You stand upright this day, all of you, before YHVH your Elohim (29:9)

"This day" is a reference to Yom Teruah, the day on which we all stand in judgment before YHVH  (the Torah reading of Nitzavim is always read on the Shabbat before “Rosh Hashanah”/Yom Teruah) - Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov.”

Who is it that is standing and why are they standing?

Once again this Torah portion gives us critical eschatological insight concerning those who will stand before the Lamb of YHVH in the end days.
We are once again confronted with the age old debate about predestination – Armenianism verses Calvanism.

Let us attempt to establish some kind of Hebraic perspective on this issue:
We start with the closing verses of this week’s Torah portion –

Deu 30:14  “For the Word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart – to do it.
Deu 30:15  “See, I have set before you today life and good, and death and evil,
Deu 30:16  in that I am commanding you today to love יהוה your Elohim, to walk in His ways, and to guard His commands, and His laws, and His right-rulings. And you shall live and increase, and יהוה your Elohim shall bless you in the land which you go to possess.
Deu 30:17  “But if your heart turns away, and you do not obey, and shall be drawn away, and shall bow down to other mighty ones and serve them,
Deu 30:18  “I have declared to you today that you shall certainly perish, you shall not prolong your days in the land which you are passing over the Yardĕn to enter and possess.
Deu 30:19  “I have called the heavens and the earth as witnesses today against you: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore you shall choose life, so that you live, both you and your seed,
Deu 30:20  to love יהוה your Elohim, to obey His voice, and to cling to Him – for He is your life and the length of your days – to dwell in the land which יהוה swore to your fathers, to Aḇraham, to Yitsḥaq, and to Yaʽaqoḇ, to give them.”

“Hebraic ethics is rooted in the doctrine of human responsibility that is freedom of the will. “All is in the hands of YHVH except the fear of YHVH” is an undisputed maxim of the sages. And to subject our will to the will of our Father in Heaven is the great purpose of man’s life on earth. Josephus states that the doctrine of free-will was maintained by the Pharisees both against the Sadducees, who attributed everything to chance, and the Essenes, who ascribed all the actions of man to predestination and Divine Providence. “Free-will is granted to every man. If he desires to incline towards the good way, and be righteous, he has the power to do so; and if he desires to incline towards the unrighteous way, and be a wicked man, he has the power to do so. Since this power of doing good and evil is in our own hands, and since all the wicked deeds which we have committed have been committed with our full conscience, it benefits us to turn to penitence and forsake our evil deeds; the power of doing so being still in our hands.  The Free-will of man remains one of the fundamental pillars of the Torah. – Maimonides” end quote taken and adapted from Hertz Chumash.

The apostolic writings add to this important issue by stating:

Rom 9:15  For He says to Mosheh, “I shall favour whomever I favour, and I shall have compassion on whomever I have compassion.” (Ex/Shemot 33:19)
Rom 9:16  So, then, it is not of him who is wishing, nor of him who is running, but of Elohim who shows favour.
Rom 9:17  For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, “For this same purpose I have raised you up, to show My power in you, and that My Name be declared in all the earth.”
Rom 9:18  So, then, He favours whom He wishes, and He hardens whom He wishes.
Rom 9:19  Then you shall say to me, “Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His counsel?”
Rom 9:20  But who are you, O man, to talk back to Elohim? Shall that which is formed say to him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?”
Rom 9:21  Does not the potter have authority over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for value and another not for value?
Rom 9:22  And if Elohim, desiring to show wrath, and to make His power known, with much patience tolerated the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction,
Rom 9:23  and that He might make known the riches of His esteem on vessels of compassion, which He had prepared beforehand for esteem,
Rom 9:24  even whom He called, not only us of the Yehuḏim, but also of the gentiles?

The severity of the above scripture is verified once again in this week’s Torah portion:

Deu 29:18  lest there should be among you a man or woman or clan or tribe, whose heart turns away today from יהוה our Elohim, to go and serve the mighty ones of these nations, lest there should be among you a root bearing bitterness or wormwood.
Deu 29:19  “And it shall be, when he hears the words of this curse, that he should bless himself in his heart, saying, ‘I have peace though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart,’ in order to add drunkenness to thirst.
Deu 29:20  “יהוה would not forgive him, but rather, the displeasure of יהוה and His jealousy shall burn against that man, and every curse that is written in this book shall settle on him, and יהוה shall blot out his name from under the heavens.
Deu 29:21  “And יהוה shall separate him for evil, out of all the tribes of Yisra’ĕl, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this Book of the Torah.

Overview of Parasha:

“On the last day of his life, Moshe gathers all the people, young and old, lowly and exalted, men and
women, in a final initiation. The covenant includes not only those who are present, but even those generations yet unborn. Moshe admonishes the people again to be extremely vigilant against idol worship because, in spite of having witnessed the abominations of Egypt, there will always be the temptation to experiment with foreign philosophies as a pretext for immorality. Moshe describes the desolation of the Land of Israel which will result from failure to heed YHVH’s mitzvoth (commandments). Descendants of that generation and foreigners alike will remark on the singular desolation of the Land and its apparent inability to be sown or to produce crops. The conclusion will be apparent to all- Hebrews have forsaken the One who protects them in favor of powerless idols. Moshe promises, however, that the people will eventually repent after both the blessings and the curses have been fulfilled. However assimilated they will have become among the nations, eventually  YHVH will bring them back to Eretz Yisrael. Moshe tells the people to remember that fulfilling the Torah is not an impossibility; rather it’s within the grasp of every Hebrew. The parasha dramatically concludes with Moshe comparing the Hebrew People’s choice to follow the Torah to a choice between life and death. Moshe exhorts the people to choose life.”  (Ohr Somayach)

Blessing for the Torah:
Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-O’lam, asher bachar banu m’kol ha-amim,
v’natan lanu eht Torah-to. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”

(Blessed are you, YHVH, our Elohim , King of the Universe,
ou have selected us from among all the peoples, and have given us your Torah.
Blessed are you, YHVH, giver of the Torah. Ameyn.)

Haftarah: Yeshayahu/Isaiah 61:10 – 63:9

Isa 61:10  I greatly rejoice in יהוה, my being exults in my Elohim. For He has put garments of deliverance on me, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.

Isa 62:1  For Tsiyon’s sake I am not silent, and for Yerushalayim’s sake I do not rest, until her righteousness goes forth as brightness, and her deliverance as a lamp that burns.
Isa 62:4  No longer are you called “Forsaken,” and no longer is your land called “Deserted.” But you shall be called “Ḥephtsiḇah,”(my desire is in her) and your land “Married,” for יהוה shall delight in you, and your land be married.
Isa 62:6  I have set watchmen on your walls, O Yerushalayim, all the day and all the night, continually, who are not silent. You who remember יהוה, give yourselves no rest,
Isa 62:7  and give Him no rest till He establishes and till He makes Yerushalayim a praise in the earth.
Isa 62:10  Pass through, pass through the gates! Prepare the way for the people. Build up, build up the highway! Remove the stones. Lift up a banner for the peoples!
of His strength? “It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.”

Isa 63:2  Why is there red on Your raiment, and Your garments like one who treads in the winepress?
Isa 63:3  “I have trodden the winepress alone, and from the peoples no one was with Me. And I trod them down in My displeasure, and I trampled them in My wrath. Their blood is sprinkled upon My garments, and I have defiled all My raiment.
Isa 63:4  “For a day of vengeance is in My heart, and the year of My redeemed has come.
Isa 63:5  “And I looked, but there was none helping, and I was astonished that there was none upholding. So My own arm saved for Me, and My wrath upheld Me.
Isa 63:6  “And I trod down peoples in My displeasure, and made them drunk in My wrath, and brought down their strength to earth.”
Isa 63:7  Let me recount the kindnesses of יהוה and the praises of יהוה, according to all that יהוה has done for us, and the great goodness toward the house of Yisra’ĕl, which He has done for them according to His compassion, and according to His many kindnesses.
Isa 63:8  And He said, “They are My people, children who do not act falsely.” And He became their Saviour.
Isa 63:9  In all their distress He was distressed, and the Messenger of His Presence saved them. In His love and in His compassion He redeemed them, and He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

Aliyah Rishon 29:10-12

Deu 29:10  “All of you are standing today before יהוה your Elohim: your leaders, your tribes, your elders and your officers, all the men of Yisra’ĕl,

“Standing” “Netzavim” is a niphal verb. A niphal verb is a “passive” verb. In other words we may assume all those who are standing are standing because YHVH had something to do with their standing.

Rom 14:4  Who are you that judges another’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. But he shall be made to stand, for Elohim is able to make him stand.

These are standing “today” in Hebrew “ha yom” which means a specific day. It is not just by chance that parashat Netzavim is always read on the Shabbat a week before Yom Teruah (Rosh ha shannah for the Jews).
We know that Yom Teruah points to the time when Yahshua will meet His bride to be, just before the great marriage supper of the Lamb.

This is a time when the righteous dead will be raised. They will stand before Yahshua (Netzavim) together with those who were caught up in the air to meet the Messiah. The same image we see when a young Hebrew couple are lifted into the air on their wedding day by the guests.
Today this is a word to those who feel too weak to carry on – He says “Netzavim” you can stand because I will help you stand and stay standing. In fact we will not only stand but we will move forward. (The title and theme of our next parasha – “Vayelech” to go, walk, come) We will stand and then proceed to move to a higher level towards becoming one with the very essence of YHVH.

Let us however not forget that this day “ha yom” is also a day of judgment. This is why the month of Elul precedes “THE day” – a time of searching ourselves and preparing to be with Yahshua forever (yamim noraim – days of awe).

Rom 14:10  ….. we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Messiah.

Deu 29:11  your little ones, your wives, and your sojourner who is in the midst of your camp, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water,

Great and small shall stand together. The sages say we will recognize the beauty and uniqueness of each person, no one will despise the other. This reminds us of a day when the body of Messiah will stand before him – united and complete.

1Co 12:14  For indeed the body is not one member but many.
1Co 12:15  If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” does it therefore not belong to the body?
1Co 12:16  And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” does it therefore not belong to the body?
1Co 12:17  If all the body was an eye, where would be the hearing? If all hearing, where would be the smelling?
1Co 12:18  But now Elohim has set the members, each one of them, in the body, even as He pleased.
1Co 12:19  And if they all had been one member, where would the body be?
1Co 12:20  And now, there are indeed many members, but one body.
1Co 12:21  And an eye is unable to say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” or again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.”
1Co 12:22  But much rather, those members of the body which are thought to be weaker are necessary.
1Co 12:23  And to those of the body which we think to be less respected, these we present greater respect. And our unseemly members have greater seemliness,
1Co 12:24  whereas our seemly members have no need. But Elohim blended together the body, having given greater respect to that member which lacks it,
1Co 12:25  that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same concern one for another.
1Co 12:26  And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is esteemed, all the members rejoice with it.
1Co 12:27  And you are a body of Messiah, and members individually.
1Co 12:28  And Elohim has appointed these in the assembly: firstly emissaries, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, ministrations, kinds of tongues.

Deu 29:12  so that you should enter into covenant with יהוה your Elohim, and into His oath, which יהוה your Elohim makes with you today,

This is that great day when those who are in Messiah will enter into a marriage covenant with him.

Aliyah Sheni 29:13-15

Deu 29:13  in order to establish you today as a people for Himself, and He Himself be your Elohim, as He has spoken to you, and as He has sworn to your fathers, to Aḇraham, to Yitsḥaq, and to Ya’aqov.
Deu 29:14  “And not with you alone I am making this covenant and this oath,
Deu 29:15  but with him who stands here with us today before יהוה our Elohim, as well as with him who is not here with us today.

These words and this promise include those who were not present when these words were spoken; those who keep the commandments and have the testimony of Yahshua.

Rev 14:12  Here is the endurance of the set-apart ones,1 here are those guarding the commands of Elohim and the belief of יהושע.2 Footnotes: 1In 12:17 they are called “the remnant”

This is why we prepare ourselves during this month of Elul to get ready to meet our Messiah.

 Aliyah Shlishi 29:16-29

Deu 29:16  “For you know how we dwelt in the land of Mitsrayim and how we passed through the nations which you passed through,
Deu 29:17  and you saw their abominations and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were with them,

In these days an awakening is beginning to take place amongst believers both Jewish and gentile that to make light of the Torah of YHVH is the worst possible error any human being can ever make. (see Yesh./Is 24)

Wormwood:

“Heb. la'anah, (to curse) the Artemisia absinthium of botanists, is known as “Wilde-als” by the Afrikaans community. Wilde-als brandy is a popular folk medicine still made and sold today.    It is noted for its intense bitterness. In the symbolical language of the Apocalypse (Rev 8:10, Rev 8:11) a star is represented as falling on the waters of the earth, causing the third part of the water to turn wormwood.
It is cultivated in cottage gardens on account of its fragrance. So it smells good but tastes bad. It is used to remedy many bodily ailments which include arousing sexual desire.

It should be noted that there is some toxicity in the herb, as there is in absinthe. It is well known that absinthe, when consumed in high quantities, can cause symptoms such as addiction, hallucinations and epileptic attacks.

Its botanical name comes from the Greek goddess “Artemis” was one of the most widely venerated of the Ancient Greek deities. Her Roman equivalent is Diana and she is frequently portrayed wearing a moon crown. (See Acts 19)

Parashat 50 – Ki Tavo = when you go in to the land.

Dev/Deut 26:1-29:8

The events described in this Torah portion are connected to the feast of Sukkot. This will be the first appointment we have with YHVH in the millennial kingdom. The instruction around this event as given to us in this Torah portion clearly establishes the kind of foundation that will be established as we enter into the millennial kingdom of our Messiah.

Once again the tone for the Torah portion is set by the title and opening words. The sages remind us that the title “Ki Tavo” is presented in its future tense form. The use of this kind of language suggests to us some future time when the land of Yisrael will be divided according to the inheritance of the different tribes of Yisrael. This event will take place at the commencement of the Messianic age.

Amo 9:15  “And I shall plant them on their own soil, and not uproot them any more from their own soil I have given them,” said יהוה your Elohim!  (Yisrael will never be dispersed again)

The preparation for this future event begins NOW!!!

We who are not Jewish believers in Messiah need to trust our Heavenly Father that we are securely grafted into the root of Yisrael.

Rom 11:16  Now if the first-fruit is set-apart, the lump is also. And if the root is set-apart, so are the branches. (dear reader I know this may offend some, but YHVH did not set the church apart as the first fruit- it has always being a believing remnant who trust in Messiah and live by YHVH’s Torah)
Rom 11:17  And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, have been grafted in among them, and came to share the root and fatness of the olive tree,
Rom 11:18  do not boast against the branches. And if you boast, remember: you do not bear the root, but the root bears you!
Rom 11:19  You shall say then, “The branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.”
Rom 11:20  Good! By unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by belief. Do not be arrogant, but fear.
Rom 11:21  For if Elohim did not spare the natural branches, He might not spare you either.
Rom 11:22  See then the kindness and sharpness of Elohim: on those who fell sharpness, but toward you kindness, if you continue in His kindness, otherwise you also shall be cut off.
Rom 11:23  And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, shall be grafted in, for Elohim is able to graft them in again.
Rom 11:24  For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a good olive tree, how much more shall these who are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?
Rom 11:25  For I do not wish you to be ignorant of this secret, brothers, lest you should be wise in your own estimation, that hardening in part has come over Yisra’ĕl, until the completeness of the gentiles1 has come in. Footnote: 1Gen. 48:19.

General Overview: The Yisraelites are commanded to bring the first of their fruit to the Temple, and to deliver all tithes to their proper recipients. Moshe explains how the blessings and curses are to be proclaimed on Mts. Grizzim and Ebal when the Hebrew nation enters into Yisrael. He then details the blessings they will receive for following the commandments of the Torah, and the calamities which will result from disregarding them.

Blessing for the Torah:

Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-O’lam, asher bachar banu m’kol ha-amim,
v’natan lanu eht Torah-to. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”

(Blessed are you, YHVH, our Elohim , King of the Universe,
you have selected us from among all the peoples, and have given us your Torah.
Blessed are you, YHVH, giver of the Torah. Ameyn.)

Haftarah: Yeshayahu/Isaiah 60:1-22

Isa 60:1  “Arise, shine, for your light has come! And the esteem of יהוה has risen upon you.
Isa 60:2  “For look, darkness covers the earth, and thick darkness the peoples. But יהוה arises over you, and His esteem is seen upon you.
Isa 60:3  “And the gentiles shall come to your light1, and sovereigns to the brightness of your rising. Footnote: 1Isa. 60:19,20, Rev. 21:23,24.
Isa 60:4  “Lift up your eyes all around and see: all of them have gathered, they have come to you; your sons come from afar, and your daughters are supported on the side.
Isa 60:5  “Then you shall see and be bright, and your heart shall throb and swell, for the wealth of the sea is turned to you, the riches of the gentiles come to you.

Aliyah Rishon 26:1-19

This section introduces us to the mitzvah of bikurim, (firstfruit) the requirement to bring one's first fruits to the Set Apart Temple. This mitzvah (commandment) applies to fruits and produce grown in the land of Yisrael, and only those for which the land of Yisrael is praised: wheat, barley, dates, figs, grapes, pomegranates and olives. When in the Temple, the owner of the fruits recites a prayer acknowledging his humble past as well as the struggle he had to go through to enter into the land. The prayer includes a declaration that no part of the tithe has been withheld and the priest presents the prayer and the offering before YHVH.
During Temple times, Jewish farmers were required to separate from their produce several different tithes. These were distributed to the priests, the Levites, the poor, and one tithe which was eaten by its owners in Jerusalem. The different tithes were not all given each year, rather there was a three-year cycle.

Deu 26:1  “And it shall be, when you come into the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you as an inheritance, and you possess it and dwell in it,
Deu 26:2  that you shall take some of the first of all the fruits of the soil which you bring from your land that יהוה your Elohim is giving you, and shall put it in a basket and go to the place where יהוה your Elohim chooses to make His Name dwell there.

The events described here coincide with the festival of Sukkot.

The Hebrew root of bikkurim (first fruits) is the same as that of bekhor (first-born)

The bride of Messiah is a kind of first fruits:

Rev 14:1  And I looked and saw a Lamb standing on Mount Tsiyon, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His Father’s Name1 written upon their foreheads. Footnote: 1Some texts read: having His Name and His Father’s Name.
Rev 14:4  They are those who were not defiled with women, for they are maidens (pure and undefiled by mixture). They are those following the Lamb wherever He leads them on. They were redeemed from among men, being first-fruits to Elohim and to the Lamb.

The implications of this are profound and very important for us to know and understand. The Bride of Messiah is beginning to understand and prepare herself as a possession of Yahshua and to possess of the land of Yisrael.
This will most probably be only those who are part of the first resurrection.

Jas 1:18  Having purposed it, He brought us forth by the Word of truth, (Torah) for us to be a kind of first-fruits of His creatures.

It is the purpose of a dedicated first fruit to bring set apartness to those who are not part of the first fruit.

Rom 11:16  Now if the first-fruit is set-apart, the lump is also. And if the root is set-apart, so are the branches.

Deu 26:3  “And you shall come to the one who is priest in those days, and say to him, ‘I shall declare today to יהוה your Elohim that I have come to the land which יהוה swore to our fathers to give us.’
Deu 26:4  “And the priest shall take the basket from your hand and place it before the altar of יהוה your Elohim.

Deu 26:5  “And you shall answer and say before יהוה your Elohim, ‘My father was a perishing Aramean, and he went down to Mitsrayim and sojourned there with few men. And there he became a nation, great, mighty, and numerous.

“you shall answer - "v'anita v'amarta" can also mean to shout out loudly (even with a tune)

Deu 26:6  ‘But the Mitsrites did evil to us, and afflicted us, and imposed hard labour on us.
Deu 26:7  ‘Then we cried out to יהוה Elohim of our fathers, and יהוה heard our voice and saw our affliction and our toil and our oppression.
Deu 26:8  ‘And יהוה brought us out of Mitsrayim with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm, with great fear and with signs and wonders.
Deu 26:9  ‘And He brought us to this place and has given us this land, “a land flowing with milk and honey.”
Deu 26:10  ‘And now, see, I have brought the first-fruits of the land which You, O יהוה, have given me.’ Then you shall place it before יהוה your Elohim, and bow down before יהוה your Elohim,
Deu 26:11  and shall rejoice in all the good which יהוה your Elohim has given to you and your house, you and the Lĕwite and the stranger who is among you.
Deu 26:12  “When you have completed tithing all the tithe of your increase in the third year, which is the year of tithing, and have given it to the Lĕwite, to the stranger, to the fatherless, and to the widow, and they have eaten within your gates and have been satisfied,
Deu 26:13  then you shall say before יהוה your Elohim, ‘I have put away the set-apart portion from my house, and also have given it to the Lĕwite, and to the stranger, and to the fatherless, and to the widow, according to all Your command which You have commanded me. I have not transgressed Your commands, nor have I forgotten.

The sages tell us:  “We can keep the Torah in two different ways: We can fit the Torah into our lives, or we can fit our lives into the Torah.

The first way involves seeking out as many leniencies as possible so the mitzvot don’t interfere with our lives too much.
Or we can look at the mitzvot as life itself – “For they are your life.” Deut 32:47
Everyone would agree that the better we keep the mitzvot in this world, the bigger will be our share in the future world. That’s only fair. But the truth is that a person who fits his life into the mitzvot, rather than fits the mitzvot into his life, has it better not only over there but over here too.”

Order will be established in the millennial kingdom – there will be a set apart priesthood and they will ensure that every word of Torah will be obeyed in its letter and in its spirit. We must understand clearly and even fear that there will be no “lone rangers” or any man or woman who have their own agenda’s.

Deu 32:47  “For it is not a worthless Word for you, because it is your life, and by this Word you prolong your days on the soil which you pass over the Yardĕn to possess.”

How serious are we today who hear these instructions and are willing to take them to heart? Those who do will one day utter these words as they enter into the millennial kingdom of Messiah.

Deu 26:14  ‘I have not eaten any of it when in mourning, nor have I removed any of it for any unclean use, nor given any of it for the dead. I have obeyed the voice of יהוה my Elohim, I have done according to all that You have commanded me.
Deu 26:15  ‘Look from Your set-apart dwelling place, from the heavens, and bless Your people Yisra’ĕl and the land which You have given us, as You swore to our fathers, “a land flowing with milk and honey.” ’
Deu 26:16  “Today יהוה your Elohim is commanding you to do these laws and right-rulings. And you shall guard and do them with all your heart and with all your being.
Deu 26:17  “You have today caused יהוה to proclaim to be your Elohim, and to walk in His ways and guard His laws, and His commands, and His right-rulings, and to obey His voice.
Deu 26:18  “And יהוה has caused you to proclaim today to be His people, a treasured possession, as He has spoken to you, and to guard all His commands,
Deu 26:19  so as to set you high above all nations which He has made, for a praise, and for a name, and for esteem, and for you to be a set-apart people to יהוה your Elohim, as He has spoken.”

Aliyah Sheni 27:1-10

Deu 27:1  And Mosheh, with the elders of Yisra’ĕl, commanded the people, saying, “Guard all the commands which I am commanding you today.

Deu 27:2  “And it shall be, on the day when you pass over the Yardĕn to the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you, that you shall set up for yourselves large stones, and plaster them with plaster,
Deu 27:3  and write on them all the Words of this Torah, when you have passed over, so that you go into the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you, ‘a land flowing with milk and honey,’ as יהוה Elohim of your fathers has spoken to you.
Deu 27:4  “And it shall be, when you have passed over the Yardĕn, that on Mount Ěyḇal you set up these stones, which I command you today, and you shall plaster them with plaster,
Deu 27:5  and build an altar to יהוה your Elohim there, an altar of stones – do not use an iron tool on them.
Deu 27:6  “Build the altar of יהוה your Elohim with complete stones, and you shall offer burnt offerings on it to יהוה your Elohim,
Deu 27:7  and shall offer peace offerings, and eat there, and rejoice before יהוה your Elohim.
Deu 27:8  “And you shall write all the Words of this Torah on the stones – plainly and well.”
Deu 27:9  And Mosheh and the priests, the Lĕwites, spoke to all Yisra’ĕl, saying, “Be silent and hear, O Yisra’ĕl: This day you have become the people of יהוה your Elohim,
Deu 27:10  and you shall obey the voice of יהוה your Elohim, and do His commands and His laws which I command you today.”

Aliyah Shlishi 27:11-26

These 12 issues discussed here lay a clear foundation for our entry and permanent residence in the land. The sages teach that a person is in public what he is in private. They state that the list of 12 curses relate to what people can do in secret and think they get away with. YHVH intended that there be no double standards in the private and public lives of His covenant people.
Note carefully each of these 12 sins and trust the Ruach to reveal their present day application in your life.

Deu 27:11  And Mosheh commanded the people on that day, saying,
Deu 27:12  “These are to stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people, when you have passed over the Yardĕn: Shimʽon, and Lĕwi, and Yehuḏah, and Yissasḵar, and Yosĕph, and Binyamin.
Deu 27:13  “And these are to stand on Mount Ěyḇal to curse: Re’uḇĕn, Gaḏ, and Ashĕr, and Zeḇulun, Dan, and Naphtali.
Deu 27:14  “And the Lĕwites shall speak with a loud voice and say to all the men of Yisra’ĕl:
Deu 27:15  ‘Cursed is the man who makes a carved or moulded image, an abomination to יהוה, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret.’ And all the people shall answer and say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:16  ‘Cursed is he who makes light of his father or his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:17  ‘Cursed is he who moves his neighbour’s boundary.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:18  ‘Cursed is he who misleads the blind in the way.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:19  ‘Cursed is he who twists the right-ruling of the stranger, the fatherless, and widow.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:20  ‘Cursed is he who lies with his father’s wife, because he has uncovered his father’s bed.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:21  ‘Cursed is he who lies with any beast.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:22  ‘Cursed is he who lies with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:23  ‘Cursed is he who lies with his mother-in-law.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:24  ‘Cursed is he who smites his neighbour secretly.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:25  ‘Cursed is he who takes a bribe to slay an innocent being.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’
Deu 27:26  ‘Cursed is he who does not establish the Words of this Torah.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amĕn!’

Aliyah Reviee 28:1-14

Deu 28:1  “And it shall be, if you diligently obey the voice of יהוה your Elohim, to guard to do all His commands which I command you today, that יהוה your Elohim shall set you high above all nations of the earth.

Deu 28:2  “And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of יהוה your Elohim:
Deu 28:3  “Blessed are you in the city, and blessed are you in the field.
Deu 28:4  “Blessed is the fruit of your body, and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your livestock – the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.
Deu 28:5  “Blessed is your basket and your kneading bowl.
Deu 28:6  “Blessed are you when you come in, and blessed are you when you go out.
Deu 28:7  “יהוה causes your enemies who rise against you to be smitten before your face – they come out against you one way and flee before you seven ways.
Deu 28:8  “יהוה commands the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, and shall bless you in the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you.
Deu 28:9  “יהוה does establish you as a set-apart people to Himself, as He has sworn to you, if you guard the commands of יהוה your Elohim and walk in His ways.
Deu 28:10  “And all peoples of the earth shall see that the Name of יהוה is called upon you, and they shall be afraid of you.
Deu 28:11  “And יהוה shall make you to have plenty of what is good, in the fruit of your body, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your ground, in the land of which יהוה swore to your fathers to give you.
Deu 28:12  “יהוה opens to you His good treasure, the heavens, to give the rain to your land in its season, and to bless all the work of your hand. And you shall lend to many nations, but you do not borrow.
Deu 28:13  “And יהוה shall make you the head and not the tail. And you shall be only on top, and not be beneath, if you obey the commands of יהוה your Elohim, which I command you today, to guard and do.
Deu 28:14  “And do not turn aside from any of the Words which I am commanding you today, right or left, to go after other mighty ones to serve them.

Aliyah Chamishi 28:15-57

When it comes to curses in the Torah we note that in several places the use of the third person as in Lev 26 – This is YHVH Himself who will bring these calamities on us because of our disobedience. We note in parashat  Bechukotai the Torah speaks in the plural of the curses, whereas in this week's Parsha the curses are mentioned in the singular.
It is safe to assume that these curse will not be upon the bride of Messiah, however because we are in a process of reaching perfect perfection in all things, we must assume that our restoration has something to do with the effects of these curses on our lives that are in a process of being perfectly restored. When we understand the nature and the impact that these curses have had on our and others, lives we will truly be able to minister life and light to the nations.
Once again let us meditate on each of these curses and ask the Ruach of YHVH to show us what needs to be restored and healed in our lives.
We must fear and not be arrogant. We must know that everything that is done in secret will be revealed, not to shame us but heal us and set us free.

Deu 28:15  “And it shall be, if you do not obey the voice of יהוה your Elohim, to guard to do all His commands and His laws which I command you today, that all these curses shall come upon you and overtake you: (hyphil verb also meaning to take hold of you )
Deu 28:16  “Cursed are you in the city, and cursed are you in the field.
Deu 28:17  “Cursed is your basket and your kneading bowl.
Deu 28:18  “Cursed is the fruit of your body and the fruit of your land, the increase of your cattle and the offspring of your flocks.
Deu 28:19  “Cursed are you when you come in, and cursed are you when you go out.
Deu 28:20  “יהוה sends on you the curse, the confusion, and the rebuke in all that you set your hand to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, because of the evil of your doings by which you have forsaken Me.
Deu 28:21  “יהוה makes the plague cling to you until He has consumed you from the land which you are going to possess.
Deu 28:22  “יהוה smites you with wasting disease, and with inflammation, and with burning, and with extreme heat, and with the sword, and with blight, and with mildew. And they shall pursue you until you perish.

Parashat 49 Ki Tetze – When you will go out….

Devarim 21:10 – 25:19

"All the Torah learned in the present world will be vain compared to the Torah of Mashiach." - Kohelet Rabba 11:12
Yahshua will not return ‘until the restoration of all things’.

Act 3:19  “Repent therefore and turn back, for the blotting out of your sins, in order that times of refreshing might come from the presence of the Master,
Act 3:20  and that He sends יהושע Messiah, pre-appointed for you,
Act 3:21  whom heaven needs to receive until the times of restoration of all matters, of which Elohim spoke through the mouth of all His set-apart prophets since of old.
Act 3:22  “For Mosheh truly said to the fathers, ‘יהוה your Elohim shall raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brothers. Him you shall hear according to all matters, whatever He says to you.
Act 3:23  ‘And it shall be that every being who does not hear that Prophet1 shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.’ (Emphasis added) Footnote: 1Deut. 18:18-20.

Let us listen once again to the words of our Messiah that will bring revelation to this Torah portion:

Yoch/Joh 15:19  “If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, for that reason the world hates you.

Joh 17:14  “I have given them Your Word, and the world hated them because they are not of the world, as I am not of the world.
Joh 17:15  “I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the wicked one.
Joh 17:16  “They are not of the world, as I am not of the world.
Joh 17:17  “Set them apart in Your truth – Your Word is truth.1 Footnote: 1See Ps. 119:142, 151.
Joh 17:18  “As You sent Me into the world, I also sent them
into the world.

Hence the title of this week’s Torah portion – “When you will go out.”

Rom 8:19  For the intense longing of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of Elohim.

The world longs to witness a people who will come out of the bondage of religion and manmade ideas of how we should live our lives here on earth. The world waits in great anticipation for such a people – may we be such an end time people that will usher in the return of our Messiah.

This Torah portion contains the revelation of such a witness.

2Co 6:17  Therefore, “Come out from among them and be separate, says יהוה, and do not touch what is unclean, and I shall receive you.

The number 49 which can be expressed as 7 x 7 also sums up the perfection intended in this teaching.

This week's reading, Ki Teitzei, contains 74 commandments, more mitzvot than any other Torah portion. Some of the commandments discussed: the law of the rebellious son, the obligation to bury the dead without undue delay, the requirement to return a found object, the prohibition against causing pain to any living creature, the prohibition against prostitution, the laws of marriage and divorce, the procedure of the Levirate marriage, and the obligation to eradicate the memory of Amalek.

Ameyn.)

Haftarah: Isaiah 54:1-10

Aliyah Rishon 21:10-21

Deu 21:10  “When you go out to fight against your enemies, and יהוה your Elohim shall give them into your hand, and you shall take them captive,
Deu 21:11  and shall see among the captives a woman fair of form, and shall delight in her and take her for your wife,
The rabbis taught, "Do not underestimate the value of parables, because by means of parables a person can master the words of Torah" (Song of Songs Rabbah 1:8).

"All these things Y'shua spoke to the multitude in parables; and without a parable He did not speak to them, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying: 'I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things kept secret from the foundation of the world.' " - Matthew 13:34-35

And so when YHVH gave us this Torah portion He was giving a most profound parable into the Supreme Issue of the Universe - A love story between a Bridegroom and Her Bride.  The story (parable) of a beautiful woman He captures after defeating the forces of heaven and hell – the story of an unloved woman who He draws to Himself with great tenderness and compassion and assures her of His undying love and affection for all time.

In parashah Ki Tetze we see a beautiful picture of an Israeli man finding a “goy” (gentile) wife and taking her as a bride bringing her into the fold of Yisrael.”

From this passage we can see that through a war this Yisraeli man is able to redeem a goy (gentile) from their pagan life and through this Yisraeli man this “isha” woman, or wife is able to be absorbed into the commonwealth of Yisrael and become a part of the faith and life of Yisrael. This process of bringing the “isha” into the “house” of the Yisraeli man, shaving her head, and cutting her nails was the sign and process of one's conversion from an old life of being a Gentile to being part of the commonwealth of Yisrael. Being brought into the “house” of an Yissraeli family was intimate language describing full inclusion and integration into the practices and faith of that “house”.
The conclusion of this conversion process; the shaving of one’s hair, the cutting off of one’s nails is culminated with the shedding the old garments. These are the garments of bondage in which this goyish isha (gentile woman) was found wearing at the time as she was redeemed during this war between Israel and the pagan elohim (mighty ones). In Devarim (Deut.) 21:13 it says, …and she shall put the clothing of her captivity from off her, and shall remain in your house…”
The old garments symbolize one’s old life, faith, and practice. These garments where to be replaced with garments as found in this Set apart Yisraeli “house” that she was now residing.

Did not our Messiah say “salvation comes from the Jews”? (Yoh/John 4:22)
Deu 21:12  then you shall bring her home to your house, and she shall shave her head and trim her nails,
Deu 21:13  and put aside (Heb -vehasira) the mantle of her captivity, and shall dwell in your house, and mourn her father and her mother a month of days. And after that you shall go in to her and be her husband, and she shall be your wife.

Note the use of the hyphil Hebrew verb “soor” “to set aside” the verb is followed by a feminine possessive pronoun indicating that it was the woman herself that was removing her garments. In the previous verse we see from the Hebrew that woman herself shaved her head and trimmed her nails. This Hebrew word for nails is “tseda” and can also mean to “make desolate” in other words you abandon your past life and its customs and await the fate your captor will choose for you.

The thirty days reminds us of the 30 days of the month of “Elul” where our Captor will observe us to determine whether we truly desire to be his and his alone.

Your Captor will observe you during these ‘30 days of Elul’ to determine whether you truly desire to be his and his alone.

Deu 21:14  “And it shall be, if you are not pleased with her, then you shall let her go at her desire, but you do not sell her at all for silver. Do not treat her harshly, since you have humbled her.

The Unloved Wife.

Deu 21:15  “When a man has two wives, one loved and the other unloved, and they have borne him children, both the loved and the unloved, and the first-born son is of her who is unloved,
Deu 21:16  then it shall be, on the day he makes his sons to inherit his possessions, he is not allowed to treat the son of the beloved wife as first-born in the face of the son of the unloved, who is truly the first-born.
Deu 21:17  “But he is to acknowledge the son of the unloved wife as the first-born by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the beginning of his strength – the right of the first-born is his.

The issue of Polygyny (a man having more than one wife) is such an emotive and controversial issue, yet the Torah clearly mentions it and how one should approach such an issue.
Western Christian civilization has attempted to force monogamy on all of society and has greatly succeeded in doing so. Most Christians oppose polygyny as YHVH’s loving way of restoring wholeness to a people, providing it takes place within the structures of the Torah.
Perhaps the true wholeness of any society can be measured by how woman and other vulnerable people are treated.
This Torah portion has much to say about kindness towards woman.

Even YHVH had two wives – Yirmeyahu/Jer 3:1-18; Ezekiel 23.

Jer 31:31  “See, the days are coming,” declares יהוה, “when I shall make a new covenant with the house of Yisra’ĕl and with the house of Yehuḏah1, Footnote: 1See Heb. 8:8-12, Heb. 10:16-17.
Jer 31:32  not like the covenant I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Mitsrayim, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them,” declares יהוה.

Deu 21:18  “When a man has a wayward and rebellious son who is not listening to the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and who, when they have disciplined him, does not listen to them,
Deu 21:19  then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, to the gate of his city,

Deu 21:20  and shall say to the elders of his city, ‘This son of ours is wayward and rebellious. He is not listening to our voice, he is a glutton and a drunkard.’
Deu 21:21  “Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones. Thus you shall purge the evil from your midst. And let all Yisra’ĕl hear, and fear.

We should all fear because our rebellion to His Torah will bring DEATH.

Aliyah Sheni 21:22-22:7

Execution by impalement.

Deu 21:22  “And when a man has committed a sin worthy of death, then he shall be put to death and you shall hang him on a tree.
Deu 21:23  “Let his body not remain overnight on the tree, for you shall certainly bury him the same day – for he who is hanged is accursed of Elohim – so that you do not defile the land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you as an inheritance.

Gal 3:13  Messiah redeemed us from the curse of the Torah, having become a curse for us – for it has been written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree.”1 – Footnote: 1Dt. 21:23..

What is the curse of the Torah?  The penalty due to us because of our disobedience.

Heb 10:28  Anyone who has disregarded (aorist active verb implies past and present) the Torah of Mosheh dies without compassion on the witness of two or three witnesses.  (Anyone who disregarded and continues to disregard the Torah)
Heb 10:29  How much worse punishment do you think shall he deserve who has trampled the Son of Elohim underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was set apart as common, and insulted the Spirit of favour?

Note the well- known use of the “chol v chomer” argument ie from light to heavy. In other words disregarding the Torah is punishable by death, how much worse punishment will we receive if disregard the power of Yahsua’s shed blood to pardon such a transgression.

In other words the shedding of the blood of Messiah cannot be separated from disobedience to the Torah, in fact the very blood of Messiah was shed for our disobedience to Torah.

You must return what you find to the original owner - Dev 22:1-3
Lost property was returned to the village square where people could recover their lost property.

Deu 22:1  “When you see your brother’s ox or his sheep going straying away, you shall not hide yourself from them. Return them to your brother without fail.
Deu 22:2  “And if your brother is not near you, or if you do not know him, then you shall bring it to your own house, and it shall be with you until your brother seeks it, then you shall return it to him.
Deu 22:3  “And so you do with his donkey, and so you do with his garment, and so you do with whatever your brother loses, which he has lost and you have found. You are not allowed to hide yourself.

The fallen  animal.

Deu 22:4  “When you see your brother’s donkey or his ox fall down on the way, you shall not hide yourself from them. Help him raise them without fail.

Transvestism – confusion of male and female roles.

Deu 22:5  “A woman does not wear that which pertains to a man, nor does a man put on a woman’s garment, for whoever does this is an abomination to יהוה your Elohim.

The sages call this mitzvoth concerning the birds nest the least of all mitzvoth -  Mat 5:17-19

Deu 22:6  “When you come upon a bird’s nest along the way, in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs, with the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs, do not take the mother with the young –
Deu 22:7  let the mother go without fail, and take the young for yourself, so that it might be well with you, and that you shall prolong your days.

“One who says (in prayer), "Your mercy extends to a bird's nest..." should be silenced... Since this reduces the mitzvot to humane laws, when in truth they are divine decrees.
(Talmud, Berachot 33b)

Aliyah Shlishi 22:8-23:6

Guard rails for a parapet roof - making your home friendly and safe. (Especially also think of children)
Deu 22:8  “When you build a new house, then you shall make a parapet for your roof, so that you do not bring blood-guilt on your house when one falls from it.

Avoiding mixture.

Deu 22:9  “Do not sow your vineyard with different kinds of seed, lest the yield of the seed which you have sown and the fruit of your vineyard be defiled.
Deu 22:10  “Do not plough with an ox and a donkey together.
Deu 22:11  “Do not put on a garment of different kinds, of wool and linen together.
Deu 22:12  “Make tassels on the four corners of the garment with which you cover yourself.

Tzitzit are made of mixed materials – cotton and wool. Cotton comes from the earth and wool comes from animals. YHVH desires for heaven and earth to come together in the lives of His Set Apart Ones.

The Defamed Wife - Dev 22;13 – 21  (evidence virginity)

Deu 22:13  “When any man takes a wife, and shall go in to her, and shall hate her,
Deu 22:14  and shall make abusive charges against her and bring an evil name on her and say, ‘I took this woman, and when I came to her I did not find her a maiden,’
Deu 22:15  then the father and mother of the young woman shall take and bring out the proof of the girl’s maidenhood to the elders of the city at the gate.
Deu 22:16  “And the girl’s father shall say to the elders, ‘I gave my daughter to this man as wife, and he hates her.
Deu 22:17  ‘And see, he has made abusive charges against her, saying, “I did not find your daughter a maiden,” and yet these are the proofs of my daughter’s maidenhood.’ And they shall spread the garment before the elders of the city.
Deu 22:18  “And the elders of that city shall take that man and punish him,
Deu 22:19  and fine him one hundred pieces of silver and give them to the father of the young woman, because he has brought an evil name on a maiden of Yisra’ĕl. And she is to be his wife, he is not allowed to put her away all his days.
Deu 22:20  “But if the matter is true, that the girl was not found a maiden,
Deu 22:21  then they shall bring out the girl to the door of her father’s house, and the men of her city shall stone her to death with stones, because she has done wickedness in Yisra’ĕl, to whore in her father’s house. Thus you shall purge the evil from your midst.
