Parashat 17 Portion 59 – Yithro – Shemot 18:1-20:26
Haftarah: Yesh 61:1-6
Second Writings: Luke 4:16-30

Blessing for the Torah Reading:
Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-O’lam, asher bachar banu m’kol ha-amim,
v’natan lanu eht Torah-to. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”

(Blessed are you, YHVH, our Elohim , King of the Universe,
you have selected us from among all the peoples, and have given us your Torah. Blessed are you, YHVH, giver of the Torah. Ameyn.)

It remains a great source of amazement to the ancient and modern Jewish sages how the most important Torah portion in the Torah – The Mattan Ha Torah – The giving of the Torah - could be named after the gentile – Yithro.
This Torah portion reminds us once again that righteous gentiles could play a critical role in these days to cause the Torah to flourish among Jews and non- Jews once again – may it be His will in our time for this to happen.

The name Yithro comes from a root word “yeter” (S3499) which can also mean “remnant.” Will there be a Torah observant ex-gentile remnant in the last days that will bring excellence to the earth and usher in a genuine Messianic Revival?

Listen carefully to the following prophetic word give to us from the Torah:

It is said of Yithro in Bamidbar 10:29-31: “And Moshe said … We are journeying to the place about which YHVH said,I will give it you; come with us, and we will do you good … And he [Yitro] said to him, I will not go; but I will depart to my own land, and to my kindred. And he [Moshe] said, Leave us not, I pray you; for you know how we are to camp in the wilderness, והיית לנו לעינים and you may be to us instead of eyes.”

Rashi (Bamidbar/Numbers10:31) reads, “You will be our guide … Another explanation: [the passuk is in] the future tense—If anything should be hidden from our eyes, you shall enlighten us.

Could the use of this future tense refer to an end time Torah observant ex-gentile bride of Messiah?

Yithro represents all the priesthoods of this world that are in strife and opposed to the One Torah and One Elohim of Yisrael (Midyan means “strife” S4080)

Exo 18:1  And Yithro, the priest of Miḏyan, Mosheh’s father-in-law, heard of all that Elohim had done for Mosheh and for Yisra’ĕl His people, that יהוה had brought Yisra’ĕl out of Mitsrayim.
Exo 18:2  And Yithro, Mosheh’s father-in-law, took Tsipporah, the wife of Mosheh – after he had sent her back,
Exo 18:3  and her two sons, of whom the name of one was Gĕreshom, for he said, “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land,”

With the name Gershom Moshe indicated that he had always been a sojourner in this world – even before his flight from Mitsrayim/ Egypt – because a tzaddik’s true world is not from this world.
The verb “garish” is also associated with the name “Gershom.” This verb means to divorce yourself from something, in the case of a “ger” it is one who has divorced himself from his culture and religion and has taken on the faith and culture of Avraham Yitzchak and Yakov and the Torah of Moshe.

Exo 18:4  and the name of the other was Eliʽezer, for he said, “The Elohim of my father was my help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.”
Eliezer comes from two Hebrew words “El” which can mean “Elohim” and it can also mean “strength or mighty.” “Ezer” “means aid or helper.”
“Eliezer can either mean Elohim is my help or my help or aid is mighty”  This reminds us of the ministry of the Ruach Ha Kodesh (the Set apart Spirit).

We who have responded to the call to return to our ancient roots know that if YHVH had not helped us we would not have been where we are today.

Exo 18:5  Yithro, Mosheh’s father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Mosheh in the wilderness, where he was encamped at the mountain of Elohim.
Exo 18:6  And he had said to Mosheh, “I, your father-in-law Yithro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons with her.”

Note in vs 2,5&6 The Torah repeats that Yitro brought back Moshe’s family. The Torah wants to draw our attention to this fact because it is repeated three times. From this we may deduce that Moshe’s family do not consist only of the 12 tribes of Yisrael. Moshe had possibly become estranged from his family because his wife may not have wanted to embrace the Torah.

Commentary: N Lawrence
18:2–3, There is indication here that Moses divorced his wife after their altercation over the circumcision of their sons in 4:24–26. The phrase sent away/back in verse two is shilluach/ (shin-lamed-lamed-vav-chet, shil-loo’-akh), which according to Strong’s and Gesenius can refer to divorce. Shilluach is from shalakh/ (shin-lamed-chet), a basic verb meaning “to send” (note passive participle ie an action which was done to her ie she received her marching orders) where in Isaiah 50:1 and Jeremiah 3:1 the prophets use it referring to YHVH’s divorce from the House of Israel/Ephraim. Though rabbinical commentators Rashi and Hirsch fail to note the possibility of Moses’ divorce (Jewish Torah commentators tend to gloss over the faults of their great  heroes), Baal HaTurim notes this possibility in his commentary. Yet in Exodus18:2, YHVH still views Zipporah as Moses’ wife. What’s going on here? Zipporah seems to have evidenced reluctance at obeying YHVH’s command to circumcise their sons (4:25), so did Moses put her away (divorce her), as a result? Was Moses, the human “savior” of Israel from Egypt and an antetype (prophetic forerunner) of Yeshua the Messianic Savior (Deut 18:15–19), having to deal with a rebellious wife even as Yeshua  had to deal with his rebellious wife Israel and eventually had to put her away? “Perhaps we see in this week’s and next week’s Torah portion how Moshe takes her back. We read  in Numbers 12:1 how Moshe took another wife (Kushite woman)”

In next week’s Torah portion we read in Mishphatim - Exo 21:10  “If he takes another wife, her food, her covering, and her marriage rights are not to be diminished.

Maybe there is a prophetic reference here to the gentile part of the Bride of Messiah. If one part of the gentile bride is not acceptable to him, he may take another gentile bride without diminishing the rights of the first one.
This may explain why so many non Torah observant Christians are blessed today, but in reality they do not want to part of a Torah observant bride and subsequently will not be included as the Bride of Messiah. They will be like spiritual concubines.

Exo 18:7  And Mosheh went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed down, and kissed him. And they asked each other about their welfare, and they went into the tent. Exo 18:8  And Mosheh told his father-in-law all that יהוה had done to Pharaoh and to the Mitsrites for Yisra’ĕl’s sake, all the hardship that had come upon them on the way, and how יהוה had delivered them. Exo 18:9  And Yithro rejoiced for all the good which יהוה had done for Yisra’ĕl, whom He had delivered out of the hand of the Mitsrites. Exo 18:10  And Yithro said, “Blessed be יהוה, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Mitsrites and out of the hand of Pharaoh, and who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Mitsrites. Exo 18:11  “Now I know that יהוה is greater than all the mighty ones, indeed in the matter in which they acted proudly, above them.” Exo 18:12  Then Yithro, the father-in-law of Mosheh, brought a burnt offering and other slaughterings unto Elohim. And Aharon came with all the elders of Yisra’ĕl to eat bread with the father-in-law of Mosheh before Elohim.

There was no temple in Yerushalyim and so offerings could be made to YHVH in other places.

Exo 18:13  And it came to be, on the next day, that Mosheh sat to rightly rule the people. And the people stood before Mosheh from morning until evening. Exo 18:14  And when the father-in-law of Mosheh saw all that he did for the people, he said, “What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit by yourself, and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?” Exo 18:15  And Mosheh said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to seek Elohim. Exo 18:16  “When they have a matter, they come to me, and I rightly rule between one and another, and make known the laws of Elohim and His Torot.” Exo 18:17  And the father-in-law of Mosheh said to him, “What you are doing is not good. Exo 18:18  “Both you and these people with you shall certainly wear yourselves out. For the matter is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it by yourself. Exo 18:19  “Now listen to my voice. Let me counsel you and Elohim be with you: Stand before Elohim for the people, and you shall bring the matters to Elohim. Exo 18:20  “And you shall enlighten them concerning the laws and the Torot, and show them the way in which they should walk and the work which they do. Exo 18:21  “But you yourself, seek out from all the people able men, who fear Elohim, men of truth, hating unfair gain. And place these over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. Exo 18:22  “And they shall rightly rule the people at all times. And it shall be that they bring every great matter to you, but they themselves rightly rule every small matter. So, make it lighter for yourself, for they shall bear with you. Exo 18:23  “If you do this word, and Elohim shall command you, then you shall be able to stand and all this people also go to their place in peace.”
Exo 18:24  And Mosheh listened to the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he said.
Exo 18:25  And Mosheh chose able men out of all Yisra’ĕl, and made them heads over the people: rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. Exo 18:26  And they rightly ruled the people at all times – the hard matters they brought to Mosheh, but they rightly ruled every small matter themselves. Exo 18:27  And Mosheh sent off his father-in-law, and he went away to his own land. Exo 19:1  In the third month after the children of Yisra’ĕl had come out of the land of Mitsrayim, on this day they came to the Wilderness of Sinai. Exo 19:2  For they set out from Rephiḏim, and had come to the Wilderness of Sinai, and camped in the wilderness. So Yisra’ĕl camped there before the mountain.

At all their other encampments, the verse says vayachanu ("and they camped," in the plural); here it says vayichan ("and he camped," in the singular). For all other encampments were in argument and dissent, whereas here they camped as one man, with one heart. (Mechilta; Rashi)
This period of time coincides with Shavuot – or Pentecost.
Unity was present at the outpouring of the Ruach.
Act 2:1  And when the Day of the Festival of Weeks had come, they were all with one mind in one place.
Act 2:2  And suddenly there came a sound from the heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
Act 2:3  And there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and settled on each one of them.
Act 2:4  And they were all filled with the Set-apart Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them to speak.
Act 2:5  Now in Yerushalayim there were dwelling Yehuḏim, dedicated men from every nation under the heaven.
Act 2:6  And when this sound came to be, the crowd came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language.

Exo 19:3  And Mosheh went up to Elohim, and יהוה called to him from the mountain, saying, “This is what you are to say to the house of Yaʽaqoḇ, and declare to the children of Yisra’ĕl:
Exo 19:4  ‘You have seen what I did to the Mitsrites, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself.
Exo 19:5  ‘And now, if you diligently obey My voice, and shall guard My covenant, then you shall be My treasured possession above all the peoples – for all the earth is Mine –
Exo 19:6  ‘and you shall be to Me a reign of priests and a set-apart nation.’ Those are the words which you are to speak to the children of Yisra’ĕl.”

Why covenant? Because YHVH wants something!  What does He want?
1. Treasured Possession.

A special people or “am segulah” this was a very special treasure above all other treasures a person would possess.
A peculiar people for purity and good works, for character and for actions –

Tit 2:14  who gave Himself(Yahshua) for us, to redeem us from all lawlessness * (Torahlessness) and to cleanse for Himself a people, His own possession, ardent for good works.2 Footnotes: *Lawlessness is a synonym for sin (1 John 3:4), Mt. 1:21, Acts 3:19 & 26, Acts 26:18, Rom. 6:1-22, Eph. 2:1-10, 1 John 3:8, Titus 3:5. 2Mt. 16:27.

2. Reign of priests.

Then it says in the Hebrew that you shall become to Me a “Mamlechet Kohanim” or kingdom of priests. YHVH not only wants to reveal Himself to the world but He wants to reproduce His life here on earth through a set apart people. Yisrael  is called by YHVH to be a nation of priests.

3. Set Apart Nation.

“goy kodesh” or nation of set apart ones to YHVH.

Isa 62:11  See, יהוה has proclaimed to the end of the earth: “Say to the daughter of Tsiyon, ‘See, your deliverance has come; see, His reward is with Him, and His work before Him.’ ”
Isa 62:12  And they shall be called, “The Set-apart People, the Redeemed of יהוה.” And you shall be called, “Sought Out, a City Not Forsaken.”

1Pe 2:9  But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a set-apart nation, a people for a possession, that you should proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvellous light,

Exo 19:7  And Mosheh came and called for the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which יהוה commanded him.
Exo 19:8  And all the people answered together and said, “All that יהוה has spoken we shall do.” So Mosheh brought back the words of the people to יהוה.
Exo 19:9  And יהוה said to Mosheh, “See, I am coming to you in the thick cloud, so that the people hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.” And Mosheh reported the words of the people to יהוה.
Exo 19:10  And יהוה said to Mosheh, “Go to the people and set them apart today and tomorrow. And they shall wash their garments,
Exo 19:11  and shall be prepared by the third day. For on the third day יהוה shall come down upon Mount Sinai before the eyes of all the people.
Exo 19:12  “And you shall make a border for the people all around, saying, ‘Take heed to yourselves that you do not go up to the mountain or touch the border of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall certainly be put to death.
Exo 19:13  ‘Not a hand is to touch it, but he shall certainly be stoned or shot with an arrow, whether man or beast, he shall not live.’ When the trumpet sounds long, let them come near the mountain.”
Exo 19:14  And Mosheh came down from the mountain to the people and set the people apart, and they washed their garments.
Exo 19:15  And he said to the people, “Be prepared by the third day. Do not come near a wife.”
Exo 19:16  And it came to be, on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain. And the sound of the ram’s horn was very loud, and all the people who were in the camp trembled.
Exo 19:17  And Mosheh brought the people out of the camp to meet with Elohim, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.
Exo 19:18  And Mount Sinai was in smoke, all of it, because יהוה descended upon it in fire. And its smoke went up like the smoke of a furnace, and all the mountain trembled exceedingly.
Exo 19:19  And when the blast of the ram’s horn sounded long and became louder and louder, Mosheh spoke, and Elohim answered him by voice.

Aliyah Sheviee 19:20-26

We have been taught to memorize prayers and scriptures but these ten sayings or the “aseret ha divarot” is one of the most important scriptures of all to memorize. In these 10 sayings is contained all the essence of Torah (see further explanation at the end of this aliyah)

Exo 19:20  And יהוה came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. And יהוה called Mosheh to the top of the mountain, and Mosheh went up.
Exo 19:21  And יהוה said to Mosheh, “Go down, and warn the people, lest they break through unto יהוה to see, and many of them fall.
Exo 19:22  “And let the priests who come near יהוה set themselves apart too, lest יהוה break out against them.”
Exo 19:23  And Mosheh said to יהוה, “The people are not able to come up to Mount Sinai, for You warned us, saying, ‘Make a border around the mountain and set it apart.’ ”
Exo 19:24  And יהוה said to him, “Come, go down and then come up, you and Aharon with you. But do not let the priests and the people break through to come up to יהוה, lest He break out against them.”
Exo 19:25  And Mosheh went down to the people and spoke to them.
Exo 20:1  And Elohim spoke all these Words, saying,
Exo 20:2  “I am יהוה your Elohim, who brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim, out of the house of slavery.
Exo 20:3  “You have no other mighty ones against My face.
Exo 20:4  “You do not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of that which is in the heavens above, or which is in the earth beneath, or which is in the waters under the earth,
Exo 20:5  you do not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, יהוה your Elohim am a jealous Ěl, visiting the crookedness of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me,
Exo 20:6  but showing kindness to thousands, to those who love Me and guard My commands.
Exo 20:7  “You do not bring1 the Name of יהוה your Elohim to naught, for יהוה does not leave the one unpunished who brings His Name to naught. Footnote: 1Or lift up, or take.
Exo 20:8  “Remember the Sabbath day, to set it apart.
Exo 20:9  “Six days you labour, and shall do all your work,
Exo 20:10  but the seventh day is a Sabbath1 of יהוה your Elohim. You do not do any work – you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. Footnote: 1There are other Sabbaths, but this is the weekly Sabbath.
Exo 20:11  “For in six days יהוה made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore יהוה blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart.
Exo 20:12  “Respect your father and your mother, so that your days are prolonged upon the soil which יהוה your Elohim is giving you.
Exo 20:13  “You do not murder.
Exo 20:14  “You do not commit adultery.
Exo 20:15  “You do not steal.
Exo 20:16  “You do not bear false witness against your neighbour.
Exo 20:17  “You do not covet your neighbour’s house, you do not covet your neighbour’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, or whatever belongs to your neighbour.”

Aseret Ha Divarot -  The Ten Sayings.

The first saying is the cornerstone and foundation and most important saying of all – there is no one like YHVH.
Now there are ten sayings and two tablets. In Hebraic thinking and life that which is heavenly appears on the right hand side and that which is meant to be the earthly expression of that which is heavenly appears on the left hand side.
Let us consider that the first saying is on the right hand tablet -  saying number one. What is the corresponding saying on the left hand tablet? It is the sixth saying.  “You shall not murder”.
When we compare the first saying with the sixth saying we conclude that when you believe or proclaim that there is anyone besides YHVH who is powerful and perfect enough to deliver us from all forms of bondage we are as good as murderers because we misrepresent who He is.
We conclude that misrepresenting YHVH is one of the most serious offences any human being can commit.
If we don’t respond to this first saying appropriately we will fall into idolatry – that’s why we declare the “shema”
2. The second saying is that we must not have any other mighty ones before His face.
For centuries religious men have produced theological images of YHVH that are not true and then they have forced them upon others and then worshipped them in a manner of speaking.
The transgression of this saying brings destruction upon generation s of people. Why does it mention three to four generations? I believe it is possible that it takes at least three to four generations of our fathers returning to the Torah and ways of YHVH before we have a chance of coming out from under the power of idolatry. I also believe that in the past century there has been a faithful remnant who have laid a foundation for our restoration. We have had various revivals the birth of Israel as a nation the outpouring of the Ruach of YHVH in various places and a return to Torah by many Jews and ex gentiles.
If we compare the second saying to the seventh saying, we find that misrepresenting YHVH is like committing adultery.
3. The third saying is that we must not make the name of YHVH futile. The Hebrew word for “futile” can also mean emptiness, vanity and falsehood.
When we refuse to call YHVH by the names which He has given to us in His Word, we rob Him of the essence of who He is. This is the worst possible kind of theft and dishonesty. He has told us who He is and by what name is to be called yet we call Him by several other names. We may not exactly know how to pronounce His name but we have the Hebrew letters and transliterations of His name. Why go and call Him something completely different?
It is not up to mankind to give Him different names. His name contains great truths about who He is when we change the names we rob YHVH and others of the truth of who He is.

That is why the third saying is compared to the eighth saying – you shall not steal.

4. The fourth saying commands us to keep the Sabbath. This is compared to the ninth saying which says we are not to be false witnesses. I believe those who refuse to honour the Sabbath as YHVH has commanded are false witness of his truth and of who He really is.

5. The fifth saying is that we must honour our parents. It is easier to understand this command when we understand what a Hebrew parent was called to be. The Hebrew parent was to first provide a sound Torah foundation for their children (see the full shema). Then the parents were to provide and education and training in a life skill. The parents were also responsible for providing marriage partners for their children.
So if your parents did their duty then you would not break the tenth commandment - Exo 20:17  “You do not covet your neighbour’s house, you do not covet your neighbour’s wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, or whatever belongs to your neighbour.”

Exo 20:18  And all the people saw the thunders, the lightning flashes, the sound of the ram’s horn, and the mountain smoking. And the people saw it, and they trembled and stood at a distance,

Hebrew says “ ve kol ha am Rahim et ha kolot” means and the people SAW the voices.
How do you see a voice? The Torah was not meant just to be heard but also SEEN .Maybe this also refers to the time when Ruach was poured out like tongues of fire on the people. We must remember that the giving of the Torah and Shavuot (Pentecost) are on the same day.

Exo 20:19  and said to Mosheh, “You speak with us and we hear, but let not Elohim speak with us, lest we die.”
Exo 20:20  And Mosheh said to the people, “Do not fear, for Elohim has come to prove you, and in order that His fear be before you, so that you do not sin.”
Exo 20:21  So the people stood at a distance, but Mosheh drew near the thick darkness where Elohim was.
Exo 20:22  And יהוה said to Mosheh, “Say this to the children of Yisra’ĕl: ‘You yourselves have seen that I have spoken to you from the heavens.
Exo 20:23  ‘You do not make besides Me mighty ones of silver, and you do not make mighty ones of gold for yourselves.
Exo 20:24  ‘Make an altar of earth for Me, and you shall slaughter on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your cattle. In every place where I cause My Name to be remembered I shall come to you and bless you.
Exo 20:25  ‘And if you make Me an altar of stone, do not build it of cut stone, for if you use your chisel on it, you have profaned it.
Exo 20:26  ‘Nor do you go up by steps to My altar, lest your nakedness be exposed on it.’

Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-‘Olam, asher natan lanu Toraht-emet, v’chay-yeh o’lam nata-b’tochenu. Parashat 16 Portion 58 -Shemot 16:25-17:16 Haftarah:Yesh 58:13-14 Second Wrintings: Mark 2:27-28

Blessing for the Torah Reading:
Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-O’lam, asher bachar banu m’kol ha-amim,
v’natan lanu eht Torah-to. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”

(Blessed are you, YHVH, our Elohim , King of the Universe,
you have selected us from among all the peoples,
and have given us your Torah. Blessed are you, YHVH, giver of the Torah. Ameyn.)

We are confronted in this parasha with the core issue of our walk here on earth – FAITH or THE FAITH. Not faith as some abstract noun but rather faith as a concrete verb – the kind of faith the ancient Hebrews taught. Without faith it is impossible to please our Creator -  Heb 11:6

Yahshua had this to say about THE faith: Luk 18:8  … But when the Son of Aḏam comes, shall He find the belief (“the faith” using a definite article) on the earth?”

The context of this parable is a woman begging an unrighteous judge for justice – his message was clear - true faith to accomplish our righteousness and favour towards YHVH does not come from our selves but from our Righteous Judge. How bad do we really want to contend for “the faith?”
There is a sense that genuine faith comes when the Ruach (Spirit) of YHVH quickens an ancient word into a now context for us – it’s like the manna our fathers collected daily.

Mat 4:4  But He answering, said, “It has been written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of יהוה.’ ”1 Footnote: 1Dt. 8:3.

Rom 10:17  So then (THE) belief comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Elohim.
The truth for many of us is that we are so often overwhelmed by the circumstances of our lives that it is very difficult to hear the voice of YHVH and to exercise victorious living. In spite of all the faith teachers and teaching Luke 18:8 still leave us wondering about our faith.

The evidence of the true faith is rest as evidenced by observing the Shabbat.

Heb 4:3  For we who have believed do enter into that rest, as He has said, “As I swore in My wrath, if they shall enter into My rest...” And yet His works have come into being from the foundation of the world.
Heb 4:4  For somewhere He has said thus about the seventh day, “And Elohim rested on the seventh day from all His works,”
Heb 4:5  and in this again, “If they shall enter into My rest...”

An extremely grave error has come into most translations of Hebrews 3:11, Hebrews 4:3&5 which have incorrectly translated  from Psalms 95:11. The incorrect translation reads “So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.”

The preposition “if” is used in both the Hebrew and the Greek, yet it is ignored when translating from these ancient languages.

H518 “im”  אם
BDB Definition: 1) if 1a) conditional clauses 1a1) of possible situations 1a2) of impossible situations 1b) oath contexts 1b1) no, not 1c) if...if, whether...or, whether...or...or 1d) when, whenever 1e) since 1f) interrogative particle 1g) but rather Part of Speech: conditional particle.

Hebrews 3:11 -(KJV) “So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest”  (incorrectly translated) - ως ωμοσα εν τη οργη μου ει εισελευσονται εις την καταπαυσιν μου

ει is translated as the negative "no" instead of "if." In Hebrews 4:3 and 4:5 ει is translated properly as "if."
The implications are huge. Consider for a moment what the ORIGINAL plain text is telling us?
“If or whenever” you enter into My Sabbaths …… Remember the Sabbaths belong to YHVH. Whether we believe it or not for almost the last 6000 years there has been a Sabbath every seventh day. Whether we believe it or not we and our ancestors have entered into a Sabbath of YHVH every seventh day for almost the past 6000 years.

Whether we like to believe it or not we have either honoured or dishonoured His Covenant by the way we have conducted ourselves on His Sabbaths.

YHVH  is warning us that HE DOES  NOT NEGOTIATE THE SABBATH WITH ANYONE AND THE WAY WE CONDUCT OURSELVES ON HIS SABBATHS COULD DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT HIS WRATH WILL COME UPON US.

This Torah portion directly addresses how we are to observe Sabbath and it teaches some important fundamentals about living in faith.

Exo 16:25  And Mosheh said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to יהוה, today you do not find it in the field.
Exo 16:26  “Gather it six days, but on the seventh day, which is the Sabbath, there is none.”
Exo 16:27  And it came to be that some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather, but they found none.

Note how the children of Yisrael immediately disobey YHVH and have been doing so ever since.

Exo 16:28  And יהוה said to Mosheh, “How long shall you refuse to guard My commands and My Torot1? Footnote: 1Torot - plural of Torah, teaching.

It seems that Sabbath is a key issue for us in understanding and entering into covenant with YHVH.

Exo 16:29  “See, because יהוה has given you the Sabbath, therefore He is giving you bread for two days on the sixth day. Let each one stay in his place, do not let anyone go out of his place on the seventh day.” Exo 16:30  So the people rested on the seventh day1. Footnote: The seventh day of the week, the weekly Sabbath, was observed before the Ten Words were given on Mt. Sinai. Exo 16:31  And the house of Yisra’ĕl called its name Manna. And it was like white coriander seed, and the taste of it was like thin cakes made with honey. Exo 16:32  And Mosheh said, “This is the word which יהוה has commanded: ‘Fill an omer with it, to keep for your generations, so that they see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim.’ ” Exo 16:33  And Mosheh said to Aharon, “Take a pot and put an omer of manna in it, and set it down before יהוה, to keep for your generations.” Exo 16:34  As יהוה commanded Mosheh, so did Aharon set it down before the Witness, to keep. Exo 16:35  And the children of Yisra’ĕl ate manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land. They ate manna until they came to the border of the land of Kenaʽan. Exo 16:36  And an omer is one-tenth of an ĕphah.

YHVH sent us Yahshua to embody everything that the Sabbath (Shabbat in Hebrew) was meant to be for us. Today more than ever before we have no excuse to be ignorant of the SHABBAT. Yahshua brought life and light to all mankind regarding YHVH’s Sabbath.

Master of the Sabbath (Mt. 12:8; Mk. 2:28; Lk. 6:5)
In the Tanach (Old Testament), it's mentioned a number of times that the Sabbath is YHVH's.
 Ex. 16:23, 25; 20:10; 35:2; Lev. 23:3; Dt. 5:14, etc.

Luk 6:5  And He said to them, “The Son of Aḏam is Master of the Sabbath.”1 Footnote: 1Mt. 12:8.
Yahshua healed on the Sabbath, his disciples on occasion rubbed grain in their hands and ate on the Sabbath.

Man was not to be shackled by the Sabbath.

Anyone who says that the Sabbath ‘is too hard to keep" makes YHVH, who made the Sabbath and gave it to His Beloved, Israel, a hard task master, no different than the ones Israel had in Mitsrayim/Egypt, or many of the religious leaders that Yahshua faced that day. “Mark (2:27) is the only account of the three that has Yahshua saying, ‘The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath." Many have illogically used this to say that believers are no longer obligated to keep set apart, YHVH’s 7th day Sabbath, but their interpretation is very strained and superficial. One of the characteristics of the religious leaders was that even YHVH Himself couldn't teach them. They thought they knew more about YHVH than YHVH’s Son who stood in front of them.

The Rabbis had similar sayings to what Yahshua said and no Jew had ever thought that the Rabbis were doing away with the Sabbath. In Mihilta on Ex. 31:14 (109b) they say, ‘The Sabbath is given over to you and not you to the Sabbath." Yoma 85b, Rabbi Yonatan ben Yosef said, "For it (Shabbat) is set apart unto you (Ex. 31:14). That is, it is committed into your hands, not you into its hands!"
Both statements reveal that the Sabbath wasn't to enslave the Jew. The same holds true for what Messiah said that day. Yahshua was saying something the Pharisees could certainly identify with. Unfortunately, they had strangled the life out of the Sabbath by some of their rules. The same holds true for Orthodox Judaism today, which is the spiritual descendent of the Pharisees. That's why it's so important for us to scrutinize ‘Jewish" things: we don't want to walk in a wrong understanding of the Scriptures.

(Man’s very first day on earth began on a Shabbat – Yahshua will return and be with us during the millennium or Shabbat of the ages)

Messiah, in telling the Pharisees that the Sabbath was made for Man and not vice-versa, and that YHVH desires chesed (forgiving-loving-kindness) showed them what He thought of picking, rubbing and eating grain on Shabbat—that it wasn't sin in His eyes. (I believe that this was not the practice of Yashua’s talmidim every Shabbat)

On the Sabbath believers get to practice ‘trusting in YHVH" in a very concrete way. When one could work on that day and earn money to live (food, shelter, etc.), but rather chooses to obey YHVH and not to work on that day, one is literally trusting YHVH in a very concrete, practical way. It's only simple math, if one works seven days a week instead of six, they will make more money. Money translates into ‘life" as food, clothes, rent, cars, etc., but YHVH says that if we keep His Sabbath set apart, He will provide wonderful things for us (Is. 58:13-14). It comes down to whether we really believe YHVH or not. It's faith, belief and trust when one doesn't work on Shabbat. Conceptually, it's the same with tithing.

Isa 58:13  “If you do turn back your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on My set-apart day, and shall call the Sabbath ‘a delight,’ the set-apart day of יהוה ‘esteemed,’ and shall esteem it, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking your own words, Isa 58:14  then you shall delight yourself in יהוה. And I shall cause you to ride on the heights of the earth, and feed you with the inheritance of Yaʽaqoḇ your father. For the mouth of יהוה has spoken.

Why does He provide when we don't work? One reason is that Israel (all true believers) is the Bride of Messiah Yahshua. Before that, Israel was ‘married" to YHVH (at Mt. Sinai, which is standard Jewish belief for the event, the true essence of covenant). As any good husband would, YHVH loves to provide for His wife (Ps. 113; Eph. 5:25-33; 1st Pet. 3:7), and the Sabbath pictures a wonderful natural and spiritual provision for her.

When we observe YHVH's Sabbath day we are saying to ourselves, first and foremost, that we truly trust YHVH for our physical provisions. It's a ‘sign" to us that we are walking with, and trusting in Yahshua. It shows Yahshua this too, and all others who know us. Everything in the natural, like the Sabbath, has a spiritual reality ‘behind" it. Just as we must recognize that it's not our intelligence or hard work that earns our daily bread, but that it comes as a gift from the hand of the YHVH (Mt. 6:26), so too with salvation.
As hard as we can ‘work out" our salvation (Phil. 2:12), we can never earn it. It's not our work or doing of good deeds that saves us. It is a Gift from Above, and it's the Sabbath day that causes us to realize this more than anything else, as we stop working and enter into His Day of rest (trusting in Him) and thanking Him for His provision and our freedom. We"re saying that we trust Him to provide for us, both in the physical realm and in the spiritual, and this is truly freeing. When believers, or traditional Jews, work on the Sabbath they are saying in effect, ‘I cannot trust You to provide for my needs, so I must work to do so."

As we walk in the knowledge of Shabbat, we see a concrete picture of not having to work for our salvation. YHVH commands us to rest, both physically and spiritually, and the Sabbath day is a concrete place to walk that understanding out, and to grow in trust of Messiah Yahshua. All Christians believe in Yahshua, but if they can't trust Him for provision today, what does that say about their level of trust for salvation tomorrow (on Judgement Day)? The Sabbath offers us, among many other things, an opportunity to show ourselves that we truly trust in YHVH for life today and eternity tomorrow, and that we have been freed from the Kingdom of Satan.” End quote.

I would like to add a personal note here. I know that for many believers seeking to return to their Hebraic roots that there are difficult challenges facing us with regards to keeping the Shabbat. There maybe a season or reason that makes it difficult to observe Shabbat – however if this becomes the rule and not the exception I believe we are being disobedient and may face the consequences of our ongoing disobedience. Read again Hebrews chapters three and four and see them in a different light.

Exo 17:1  And all the congregation of the children of Yisra’ĕl set out on their journey from the Wilderness of Sin, according to the command of יהוה, and camped in Rephiḏim. And there was no water for the people to drink. Exo 17:2  Therefore the people strove with Mosheh, and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Mosheh said to them, “Why do you strive with me? Why do you try יהוה?” Exo 17:3  And the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Mosheh, and said, “Why did you bring us out of Mitsrayim, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” Exo 17:4  Then Mosheh cried out to יהוה, saying, “What am I to do with this people? Yet a little and they shall stone me!” Exo 17:5  And יהוה said to Mosheh, “Pass over before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Yisra’ĕl. And take in your hand your rod with which you smote the river, and go. Exo 17:6  “See, I am standing before you there on the rock in Ḥorĕḇ. And you shall smite the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people shall drink.” And Mosheh did so before the eyes of the elders of Yisra’ĕl. Exo 17:7  And he called the name of the place Massah and Meriḇah, because of the ‘strife’ of the children of Yisra’ĕl, and because they ‘tried’ יהוה, saying, “Is יהוה in our midst or not?”

This was the place of testing and has a history of the most tragic consequences of Yisrael’s unbelief – the 10 spies, Moshe disqualifying himself, Miryams death and other events which gave rise for remembering the day of tisha b’av. This is possibly the same place as modern day Petra where it is believed to be a future place of refuge where the testing in the future may be more severe for a remnant of Yisrael than ever before.

Exo 17:8  And Amalĕq came and fought with Yisra’ĕl in Rephiḏim.

It almost appears that YHVH will hand us over to our oppressors to chastise us for our unbelief.

Rev 13:7  And it was given to him to fight with the set-apart ones and to overcome them. And authority was given to him over every tribe and tongue and nation.

Is it possible for a remnant to overcome the tachat moshiach – anti messiah?

I believe the only hope is to have the heart and mind of Moshe rabbeinu. Moshe referred to one who would come after him.

Deu 18:18  ‘I shall raise up for them a Prophet like you out of the midst of their brothers. And I shall put My Words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him.
Deu 18:19  ‘And it shall be, the man who does not listen to My Words which He speaks in My Name, I require it of him.

Hur when reversed means “ruach” or spirit. Aaron reversed means “nir aleph” and can refer to the “nir tamid” a light or testimony that never fades or disappears. When these qualities in Moshe are honoured and embraced by us we will have victory over Amalek.

Exo 17:9  And Mosheh said to Yehoshua, “Choose for us men and go out, fight with Amalĕq. Tomorrow I am stationing myself on the top of the hill with the rod of Elohim in my hand.” Exo 17:10  And Yehoshua did as Mosheh said to him, to fight with Amalĕq. And Mosheh, Aharon, and Ḥur went up to the top of the hill. Exo 17:11  And it came to be, when Mosheh held up his hand, that Yisra’ĕl prevailed. And when he let down his hand, Amalĕq prevailed. Exo 17:12  But Mosheh’s hands were heavy, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aharon and Ḥur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. And his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. Exo 17:13  And Yehoshua defeated Amalĕq and his people with the edge of the sword. Exo 17:14  And יהוה said to Mosheh, “Write this for a remembrance in the book and recite it in the hearing of Yehoshua, that I shall completely blot out the remembrance of Amalĕq from under the heavens.” Exo 17:15  And Mosheh built an altar and called its name, יהוה Nissi, Exo 17:16  for he said, “Because a hand is on the throne of Yah, יהוה is to fight against Amalĕq, from generation to generation.”  (Amalek grandson of Esav Ber 36:12)

Perhaps the greatest challenges we will face on our journey back to the Promised Land will not come from outside enemies but from within our own ranks, our friends, our families and even from ourselves.

Mat 10:34  “Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword,1 Footnote: 1In Lk. 12:51 the word “division” is used, while “sword” has the same meaning here.
Mat 10:35  for I have come to bring division, a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law –
Mat 10:36  and a man’s enemies are those of his own household.1 Footnote: 1Lk. 12:53, Mic. 7:6.
Mat 10:37  “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me, and he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.1 Footnote: 1See 19:29, Lk. 14:26.
Mat 10:38  “And he who does not take up his stake and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.
Mat 10:39  “He who has found his life shall lose it, and he that has lost his life for My sake shall find it.

Act 14:22  ….. through many pressures we have to enter the reign of Elohim.

This Torah portion gives some very important instruction regarding our journey as pilgrims in this life. Shemot 15:25 tells us that at the bitter waters of testing YHVH issues a very important command:

שָׁם שָׂם לוֹ חֹק וּמִשְׁפָּט, וְשָׁם נִסָּהוּ.
כו  וַיֹּאמֶר אִם-שָׁמוֹעַ תִּשְׁמַע לְקוֹל יְהוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ, וְהַיָּשָׁר בְּעֵינָיו תַּעֲשֶׂה, וְהַאֲזַנְתָּ לְמִצְוֹתָיו, וְשָׁמַרְתָּ כָּל-חֻקָּיו--כָּל-הַמַּחֲלָה אֲשֶׁר-שַׂמְתִּי בְמִצְרַיִם, לֹא-אָשִׂים עָלֶיךָ, כִּי אֲנִי יְהוָה, רֹפְאֶךָ.  {ס}

There He made a law and a right-ruling for them, and there He tried them.
Exo 15:26  And He said, “If you diligently obey (if listening you will listen – if you are really hearing you will hear..) the voice of יהוה your Elohim and do what is right in His eyes, and shall listen to His commands and shall guard all His laws, I shall bring on you none of the diseases I brought on the Mitsrites, for I am יהוה who heals you.”

In the midst of trails and testing YHVH gives us His law (‘chok’ in Hebrew ie something which is not always easy to understand but we obey it anyway) and a right ruling(mishpat) and He says that if  we are truly listening we will hear and obey the voice of YHVH –even in the midst of trails. We will then do what is right in His eyes and we will obey His commandments and guard ALL His chukim. Then YHVH will not put on us the diseases of Mitzrayim and He will heal us.

A quote from a Rabbi Eliyahu Hoffmann:

“The mitzvos of the Torah are often divided into two main categories; chukim and mishpatim. Mishpatim are those mitzvos which appeal to our sense of logic and morality: Don't kill; don't steal; honour your father and mother. Chukim are mitzvos that have no direct connection with human character and morality - they are simply laws which G-d commands us to obey. Examples of chukim are: Laws of kashrus (kosher foods); tzitzis (fringes); tefilin.
Parah Adumah (Red Heifer) is the ultimate chok (singular of chukim). Its laws defy all logic. The ashes of the Parah Adumah are used to purify one who has become tamei (ritually impure), yet a person who is not ritually impure who comes in contact with its ashes is rendered impure! Honouring one's father and mother is a mishpat: They gave you life, sustained and raised you, so you must honour them.
Yet the lines of division between chukim and mishpatim are not always so clear.
Psa 119:54  Your Precepts(chukim) have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage.

A quote from another rabbi states:

“Eidus commandments are those that would not be understood prior to God’s commanding them, such as the laws related to Passover, but that once commanded, can be easily understood as serving to establish God’s presence in this world in a meaningful and understandable fashion.  Chukim are those commandments which make no sense.  They seem arbitrary and random, like the laws relating to the red heifer or shatnes.
And so in the midst of testing we are instructed to do things which seem the opposite of what we want to do – like throwing a tree into bitter waters – which itself was most probably bitter.

Our Torah portion begins:

Exo 15:19  For the horses of Pharaoh went with his chariots and his horsemen into the sea, and יהוה brought back the waters of the sea upon them. And the children of Yisra’ĕl went on dry ground in the midst of the sea.
Exo 15:20  And Miryam the prophetess, the sister of Aharon, took the timbrel in her hand. And all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.
Exo 15:21  And Miryam answered them, “Sing to יהוה, for He is highly exalted! The horse and its rider He has thrown into the sea!”
Exo 15:22  And Mosheh brought Yisra’ĕl from the Sea of Reeds, and they went out into the Wilderness of Shur. And they went three days in the wilderness and found no water.

The first time a “prophetess” is mentioned in scripture. Also the first time creative dancing is mentioned in scripture. Sadly like Korach her cousin she later rises up in rebellion against Moshe rabbeinu.
There are many interesting parallels between Miryam the mother of Yahshua and Miryam the sister of Moshe.
Once again sadly history shows us how these woman are venerated and even worshipped.

It is fanciful to credit Miryam, Moshe’ sister with providing water in the wilderness. Some sages go as far as to say that it was Moshe who provided manna and Miryam who provided water in the wilderness.
The truth is YHVH provided both manna and water in the wilderness.
Shaul gives us some valuable insight regarding the issue of woman in authority.

1Ti 2:12  But I do not permit a woman to teach(make disciples) or to have authority (Greek to usurp man’s authority) over a man, rather, to be in silence. (‘Rather quietness’ in Greek does not mean muzzled it but it means a woman must not stir up strife)
1Ti 2:13  Because Aḏam was formed first, then Ḥawwah.
1Ti 2:14  And Aḏam was not deceived, but the woman, having been deceived, fell into transgression.
1Ti 2:15  But she shall be saved in childbearing if they continue in belief, and love, and set-apartness, with sensibleness.

There is a great deal of opposition to this scripture. Shaul may not have been addressing a cultural issue but a truth issue.

Exo 15:23  And they came to Marah, and they were unable to drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. So the name of it was called Marah.

Marah or bitter is possibly one of the origins of the name of Miryam.

Exo 15:24  And the people grumbled against Mosheh, saying, “What are we to drink?”
Exo 15:25  Then he cried out to יהוה, and יהוה showed him a tree. And when he threw it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. There He made a law and a right-ruling for them, and there He tried them.
Exo 15:26  And He said, “If you diligently obey the voice of יהוה your Elohim and do what is right in His eyes, and shall listen to His commands and shall guard all His laws, I shall bring on you none of the diseases I brought on the Mitsrites, for I am יהוה who heals you.”
Exo 15:27  And they came to Ělim, where there were twelve fountains of water and seventy palm trees. And they camped there by the waters.

Elim can mean strength – we believe that the 12 tribes of Yisrael and the seventy elders of the Sanhedrin will provide guidance and bring strength and refreshing to the nations. (70)

Exo 16:1  And they set out from Ělim, and all the congregation of the children of Yisra’ĕl came to the Wilderness of Sin, which is between Ělim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their going out of the land of Mitsrayim.
Exo 16:2  And all the congregation of the children of Yisra’ĕl grumbled against Mosheh and Aharon in the wilderness.
Exo 16:3  And the children of Yisra’ĕl said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of יהוה in the land of Mitsrayim, when we sat by the pots of meat and when we ate bread to satisfaction! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to put all this assembly to death with hunger.”
Exo 16:4  And יהוה said to Mosheh, “See, I am raining bread from the heavens for you. And the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, in order to try them, whether they walk in My Torah or not.
Exo 16:5  “And it shall be on the sixth day that they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.”
Exo 16:6  And Mosheh and Aharon said to all the children of Yisra’ĕl, “At evening you shall know that יהוה has brought you out of the land of Mitsrayim.
Exo 16:7  “And in the morning you shall see the esteem of יהוה, for He hears your grumblings against יהוה. And what are we, that you grumble against us?”
Exo 16:8  And Mosheh said, “In that יהוה gives you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread to satisfaction, for יהוה hears your grumblings which you make against Him. And what are we? Your grumblings are not against us but against יהוה.”
Exo 16:9  And Mosheh said to Aharon, “Say to all the congregation of the children of Yisra’ĕl, ‘Come near before יהוה, for He has heard your grumblings.’ ”
Exo 16:10  And it came to be, as Aharon spoke to all the congregation of the children of Yisra’ĕl, that they looked toward the wilderness and see, the esteem of יהוה appeared in the cloud.
Exo 16:11  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,
Exo 16:12  “I have heard the grumblings of the children of Yisra’ĕl. Speak to them, saying, ‘Between the evenings you are to eat meat, and in the morning you are to be satisfied with bread. And you shall know that I am יהוה your Elohim.’ ”
Exo 16:13  And it came to be that quails came up at evening and covered the camp, and in the morning the dew lay all around the camp.
Exo 16:14  And the layer of dew went up, and see, on the surface of the wilderness, was a small round substance, as fine as frost on the ground.
Exo 16:15  And the children of Yisra’ĕl saw, and they said to each other, “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Mosheh said to them, “It is the bread which יהוה has given you to eat.
Exo 16:16  “This is the word which יהוה has commanded: ‘Let every man gather it according to each one’s need, an omer for each being, according to the number of beings. Let every man take for those who are in his tent.’ ”
Exo 16:17  And the children of Yisra’ĕl did so and gathered, some more, some less.
Exo 16:18  And they measured it by omers, and he who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little. Each one gathered according to his need.
Exo 16:19  And Mosheh said, “Let no one leave any of it until morning.”
Exo 16:20  And they did not listen to Mosheh, so some of them left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Mosheh was wroth with them.
Exo 16:21  And they gathered it every morning, each one according to his need. And when the sun became hot, it melted.
Exo 16:22  And it came to be, on the sixth day, that they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. And all the rulers of the congregation came and told Mosheh.
Exo 16:23  And he said to them, “This is what יהוה has said, ‘Tomorrow is a rest, a Sabbath set-apart to יהוה. That which you bake, bake; and that which you cook, cook. And lay up for yourselves all that is left over, to keep it until morning.’ ”
Exo 16:24  And they laid it up till morning, as Mosheh commanded. And it did not stink, and no worm was in it.

A remnant in the last days will be tested and tested and tested until they truly hear the voice of YHVH and do what is right in His Eyes. We will listen to His commands and shall guard all His laws. We shall be healed of all the diseases He put on the Mitsrites.

This could be the restoration of all things before Messiah returns.

Baruch atah YHVH, Eloheynu, Melech ha-‘Olam, asher natan lanu Toraht-emet, v’chay-yeh o’lam nata-b’tochenu. Baruch atah YHVH, noteyn ha-Torah. Ameyn.”

(Blessed are you Yahweh, our Elohim, King of the Universe, you have given us your Torah of truth, and have planted everlasting life within our midst. Blessed are you, YHVH giver of the Torah – Ameyn
