Beit El Messianic Congregation

Beit El Messianic Congregation is a Torah observant Messianic congregation situated in Plumstead, Cape Town, South Africa. We invite both Jew and Gentile seeking to return to the Hebraic roots of our faith in Messiah Yahshua. We study and midrash on the weekly Torah portions as we gather (those who can physically come to the location and the rest via Teams) at 2pm every Shabbat for our study.

About Me

My photo
Raymond Crowther - the Shepherd/teacher of the Beit El Messianic Congregation
Cape Town, Plumstead, Southern Suburbs, South Africa
Almost 48 years ago I became aware of a clear and distinct calling from our Heavenly Father to dedicate my life in service to Him through Yahshua Messiah our Mediator. I then went to Israel for almost 1 year- looked after a flock of sheep in the Shimshon valley. My wife and I were married in 1979 and were actively involved in various “Renewal/Pentecostal Charismatic” congregations and despite our commitment as leaders to these various ministries we became more and more aware that the Church never replaced Israel and the Torah was never done away with. Mat 5:17 “Do not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets.e I did not come to destroy but to complete. Footnote: eThe Law and the Prophets is a term used for the pre-Messianic Scriptures. Mat 5:18 “For truly, I say to you, till the heaven and the earth pass away, one yod or one tittle shall by no means pass from the Torah till all be done. See also verse 19. For the past 18 years we returned to the roots of our faith (Rom 11). rabbisson@gmail.com

ROSH CHODESH - Blowing of the silver trumpets and shofars (Rams' horns and also kudu horns)

Trumpets and shofars (rams' horns or curved horn of an animal) are used interchangeably in Scripture. It is likely that the two instruments were used at the same time and they were distinguished not by their use but by their users: The trumpets were sounded exclusively by the priests. (Bem/Num 10:8). Verse 10a says "And in the day of your gladness, and in your appointed times, and at the beginning ("Rosh" in Hebrew) of your months ("chodesh" in Hebrew), you shall blow the trumpets over.........." When the function of the shofar is compared with that of the trumpet, it is clear
that they often overlap.

So, we are to blow the shofars at the sighting of the sliver of the new moon (rosh chodesh) which is the beginning of the new Scriptural month (Rosh chodesh) according to YHVH's (Yahveh's) calendar and also on the 15th (middle of the Biblical month when it is full moon) with the Chag Ha Matzot
(Feast of Unleavened bread's first day) and also on the first day of Sukkot which falls also on the 15th day of the Seventh Scriptural month: Psa 81:3 Blow the ram’s horn at the time of the New Moon (Rosh chodesh), At the full moon (15th of the month of Aviv and 15th of the Seventh month), on our festival day."
Observing the New Moons (Rosh chodesh) helps us to “number our days” according to Elohim's calendar and system
of time-keeping, as opposed to the pagan Roman (Gregorian)calendar! It helps us to think in terms of YHVH, our Creator's calendar, and in relation to HIS time-table for our lives!

Deu 6:4 “Hear, O Yisra’ěl: יהוה our Elohim, יהוה is one!
Deu 6:5 “And you shall love יהוה your Elohim with all your heart, and with all your being, and with all your might. 6:6 “And these Words which I am commanding you today shall be in your heart,
Deu 6:7 and you shall impress them upon your children, and shall speak of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up,
Deu 6:8 and shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

TEFILLIN (sometimes called phylacteries) are cubic black leather boxes with leather straps that Orthodox Jewish men wear on their head and their arm during weekday morning prayer. Observant Jews consider wearing tefillin to be a very great mitzvah (command). It is based on the above commandments found in the Torah.)

Ray Crowther got the impression one day to weave "prayer bands'' to be like Teffillin for us as Messianic believers who don't follow the commandments exactly as the Jews interpreted some of them which has not a definite description of how exactly it should look like, like the Tefillin for example. There are certain commandments like the above one that has a spiritual meaning but also a physical implication and we believe our Father will be pleased if we at least try to be obedient to the physical implication even if it is not according to the prescriptions of the Orthodox Jews. We put this band around our hand and head as it has the words of Devarim 6:4 and 5 woven into the band. Ray weaves the bands in white with black letters, blue letters, red, maroon or whatever colour you would choose.

Hand woven Talits and prayer bands for sale

Ray Crowther started weaving in 2018 as he just got a desire to weave Prayer shawls (Tallit) on a loom. He bought a second hand very old big loom and went for lessons. If you are interested to purchase one that is already made or to order one for purchasing then you can click on ''About me'' and click on ''email'' and you can discuss how to order and tell him if you want to order a tallit with specific colours and a specific size or you can order ones that are already available. We tie the Tzitztiyot (plural for Tzitzit) with a blue string in and then tie them on all four corners of the Tallit.
Ray doesn't have time to weave everyday so we don't have a lot in stock. Of course it is not as perfect as a machine woven tallit and yet special because it is woven by a Messianic Torah teacher, the person who started this Blog and who is the Moreh (teacher) of Torah here at Beit El Messianic Congregation.

Strictly speaking, a tent (ohel in Hebrew) is not the correct Sukkah (temporal building- booth that is by definition defined in Hebrew dictionaries as a temporary structure built by farmers in the field from ready materials such as branches and leafs- this is what we strictly speaking are to stay in for 7 days) but for now this is the best we can do to stay in something temporal for 7 days. Normally we try and built something that is a real Sukkah just to at least sit and eat under

Symbolic meaning of the “Chuppah” at a Hebraic/Messianic wedding

It is customary for Jews (non Messianic and Messianic) as also Messianic non-Jews (believers in Yahshua (Jesus) who acknowledge the Hebraic roots of their faith and that Yahshua didn't come to abolish the Torah) to get married under a "Chuppah" (a canopy). A Tallit (prayer shawl) gets mainly used to be the covering above four poles, but some also use other material to drape over another 4 horizontal poles. With some ceremonies there are four people holding the four poles of the Chuppah and with other it is free standing.

The bridal canopy is a multifaceted symbol: it is symbolic of the groom bringing his bride into his home and of their dwelling together. It is also a reminder of the tent of our
Patriarchs (Avraham/Abraham, Yitschak/Izak and Ya’akov/Jacob).

The 4 poles that hold up the Chuppah symbolize the four pillars/ the corner stones that are keeping a “house” standing. It is open on all sides to recall the tent of Avraham
(Abraham) and Sarah, who had doors on all sides of his dwelling to welcome guests and portray hospitality.

When standing under the Chuppah, it symbolizes the Almighty’s covenants, promises, and covering.

This is also symbolic of the marriage coming under the set apart covering of Elohim.

The covering represents protection, mercy, and favour.

The customary CIRCLING (7 times) of a bride around the bridegroom

At a Jewish or Messianic/Hebraic wedding ceremony it is customary for a bride to circle her bridegroom seven times.

This is an ancient custom that has been practiced in Israel for many centuries. It is a prophetic act that seeks to symbolise the truth of Yirmeyahu/Jeremiah 31:22: For יהוה has created what is new on earth: a woman encompasses a man!”

Seven times is significant because of its scriptural reference of perfection and completion; the reference in Hosea 2:19-21 of YHVH’s seven-fold betrothal to His people, Israel; the reference in Revelation 4:5 to the seven Spirits of Elohim.

Tallit covering

Near the end of the ceremony, the bridegroom covers himself and his bride with a Tallit (many times a gift from the bride) as a symbolic act of his covering as husband over her. Together they are standing under the chuppah which symbolises the Eternal One's covering and protection over them as a couple.
