Parashat 47 Portion 158 - Deut. 15:7 – 16:17 - Amos 8:4-10 + 9:13-16

Blessed are You, YHVH our Elohim, King of the universe, who has made us set apart through His commandments and commanded us to actively study Torah. Please YHVH, our Elohim, sweeten the words of Your Torah in our mouths and in the mouths of all Your people Yisrael. May we and our offspring, and the offspring of Your people, the House of Yisrael, may we all, together, know Your Name and study Your Torah for the sake of fulfilling Your desire. Blessed are You, YHVH, Who teaches Torah to His people Yisrael. Blessed are You, YHVH our Elohim, King of the universe, Who chose us from all the nations and gave us the Torah. Blessed are You, YHVH, Giver of the Torah

Deu 15:7  “When there is a poor man with you, one of your brothers, within any of the gates in your land which יהוה your Elohim is giving you, do not harden your heart nor shut your hand from your poor brother, (Heb - make your heart rigid)

The sages teach us that when a community guards the Torah, there should be prosperity for all its members. Any breach of Torah could manifest itself in poverty or in sickness. For this reason, it was incumbent on each member of the Torah community to constantly examine themselves as to whether or not they are in one accord with each other and with YHVH’s Torah –

We see the implications of this principle illustrated in the Apostolic writings – Elevating the instruction of this Torah Portion.

Mat 18:15  “And if your brother sins against you, go and reprove him, between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.

Mat 18:16  “But if he does not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word might be established.’

Mat 18:17  “And if he refuses to hear them, say it to the assembly. And if he refuses even to hear the assembly, let him be to you like a gentile and a tax collector.

Mat 18:18  “Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind1 on earth shall be having been bound1 in heaven, and whatever you loosen1 on earth shall be having been loosened1 in heaven. Footnote: 1Binding and loosening is Heḇrew idiom for exercising authority (to prohibit and permit).

Mat 18:19  “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning any matter that they ask, it shall be done for them by My Father in the heavens.

Mat 18:20  “For where two or three are gathered together in My Name, there I am in their midst.”

Mat 18:21  Then Kĕpha came to Him and said, “Master, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?”

Mat 18:22  יהושע said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.

Poverty sickness and disease are a curse and will one day have no place in the Community of those who are of “The Faith”

Psa 133:1  See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity –

Psa 133:2  Like the precious oil on the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aharon, Running down on the collar of his robes –

Psa 133:3  Like the dew of Ḥermon, That comes down on the mountains of Tsiyon. For there יהוה commanded the blessing, Life forever!

The spiritual, emotional and prospering well being of the individual must become the spiritual, emotional and prospering well being of the community. If not, the well being of the community is at risk.

Deu 15:8  for you shall certainly open your hand to him and certainly lend him enough for his need, whatever he needs.

CLV - 7 In case there should be among you a needy person, one of your brothers within one of your gates in your land that Yahweh your Elohim is giving to you, you shall neither make `your heart rigid nor shut `your hand from your needy brother. 8 Rather you shall open, yea open− `your hand to him and give him give security, yea security− sufficient for his lack what is lacking to him

Why do we even speak of such faith communities that are very rare and hard to find?

Because they will exist one day.

1Jn 3:3  And everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself….

Deu 15:9  “Be on guard lest there be a thought of Beliyaʽal (Heb – without usefulness)in your heart, saying, ‘The seventh year, the year of release, is near,’ and your eye is evil against your poor brother and you give him naught. And he shall cry out to יהוה against you, and it shall be a sin in you.

Some Yisraelites may have been hesitant to give loans in the seventh year because this was a year that all debts were to be cancelled. To have this spirit was compared to having Beliyaal in your heart. Beliyaal also means to “seek profit through wickedness”

Luk 6:38  “Give, and it shall be given to you. A good measure, pressed down and shaken together and running over shall be put into your lap. For with the same measure with which you measure, it shall be measured back to you.”

Deu 15:10  “You shall certainly give to him, and your heart should not be grieved when you give to him, because for this reason יהוה your Elohim does bless you in all your works and in all to which you put your hand.

Deu 15:11  “Because the poor one does not cease from the land. Therefore, I am commanding you, saying, ‘You shall certainly open your hand to your brother, to your poor and to your needy one, in your land.'

Joh 12:8  “For the poor you have with you always..

This is may not just be a statement of fact, but rather a accusation against us for having poor amongst us – in YHVH’s covenant community this should not be so.

Jer 10:23  O יהוה, I know the way of man is not in himself, it is not for man who walks to direct his own steps.

Jer 10:24  O יהוה, chastise me, but with right-ruling – not in Your displeasure, lest You bring me to naught.

Quotes form Watchman Nee but the Name restoring is done by author of thee notes:

“The Law requires much, but offers no help in the carrying out of its requirements. The requires Master Yahshua requires  as much, yea more (Matt. 5:21–48). But what He requires from us, He Himself carries out in us. The Law makes demands and leaves us helpless to fulfill them; Messiah  demands, but He Himself fulfills in us the very demands He makes.”

“Elohim must bring us to a point--I cannot tell you how it will be, but He will do it--where, through a deep and dark experience, our natural power is touched and fundamentally weakened, so that we no longer dare trust ourselves.”
― Watchman Nee, The Normal Christian Life

“The idea of waste only comes into our Christianity when we underestimate the worth of our Master.”
― Watchman Nee, The Normal Christian Life

“The vessel through which Yahshua haMashach Himself in this generation is not the individual, but the body of Messiah. True, “Elohim hath dealt to each man a measure of faith” (12:3), but alone in isolation man can never fulfill YHVH our Elohim’s purpose. It requires a complete body of Messiah  to attain to the stature of Messiah and to display His glory.”

A drowning man cannot be saved until he is utterly exhausted and ceases to make the slightest effort to save himself.

― Watchman Nee, The Normal Christian Life

“In the same way we can have our soul, with the full use of its faculties; and yet the soul is not now our life-spring. We are no longer living in it, we are no longer drawing from it and living by it; we use it. When the body becomes our life, we live like beasts. When the soul becomes our life, we live as rebels and fugitives from Elohim - gifted, cultured, [and] educated, no doubt, but alienated from the life of . But when we come to live our life in the Spirit, and by the Spirit, though we still use our soul faculties just as we do our physical faculties, they are now the servants of the Spirit; and when we have reached that point Elohim can really use us.”

Rom 8:4  so that the righteousness of the Torah should be completed in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Deu 15:12  “When your brother is sold to you, a Heḇrew man or a Heḇrew woman, and shall serve you six years, then let him go free from you in the seventh year.

Deu 15:13  “And when you send him away free from you, let him not go away empty-handed.

Deu 15:14  “You shall richly supply him from your flock, and from your threshing-floor, and from your winepress. With that which יהוה has blessed you with, give to him.

Deu 15:15  “And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Mitsrayim, and יהוה your Elohim redeemed you. Therefore I am commanding you this word today.

Deu 15:16  “And it shall be, when he says to you, ‘I do not go away from you,’ because he loves you and your house, because it is good for him with you,

Deu 15:17  then you shall take an awl and thrust it through his ear to the door, and he shall be your servant forever(chadal). Do the same to your female servant.

The Hebrew word “chadal” is used in this verse and means “will not cease or come to an end.”

It appears that some people are better off been under some form of supervision over their lives forever – see vs 17 – There seem to different aspects to this instruction found in Shemot 21 and Vayikra 25. Hebrew slaves were encouraged to return to their family inheritance in the year of Jubilee. Hebrew slaves were not meant to be slaves forever. Woman slaves were to be treated differently- see Shemot 21.

Even Messiah submitted Himself to His Master for ever and ever.

Deu 16:3  “Eat no leavened bread with it. For seven days you eat unleavened bread with it, bread of affliction, because you came out of the land of Mitsrayim in haste – so that you remember the day in which you came out of the land of Mitsrayim, all the days of your life.

Deu 16:4  “And no leaven should be seen with you in all your border for seven days, neither should any of the meat which you slaughter in the evening on the first day stay all night until morning.

Deu 16:11  “And you shall rejoice before יהוה your Elohim, you and your son and your daughter, and your male servant and your female servant, and the Lĕwite who is within your gates, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow who are in your midst, at the place where יהוה your Elohim chooses to make His Name dwell.

Deu 16:17  but each one with the gift of his hand, according to the blessing of יהוה your Elohim which He has given you.

Col 1:24  who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in Messiah’s afflictions, for the sake of His Body, which is the assembly,

Col 1:25  of which I became a servant according to the administration of Elohim which was given to me for you, to fill the word of Elohim,

Col 1:26  the secret which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His set-apart ones,
